Billy McAnally

Post by raydoug »

Back in the 1960’s I had a mate by the name of Ross McAnally who lived in Dundas Valley and his father was a very good featherweight from the 1930’s. His name was Billy McAnally. He was good enough to box a fifteen round draw with world class
Merv Darkie Blandon in 1934.. Blandon had previously beaten Billy on points. Billy was a nice little bloke who worked on the wharfs in Sydney
Ross later worked on the wharfs

Ross McAnally was only a little bloke but was a bull terrier in street fights. He was at the Local Inn in West Ryde in 1965 when he turned on me over nothing and we took the fight outside in the car park . I remember he hit me and split my head open. It was discovered he had knuckle dusters on his hands. I didn’t treat the wounds properly and my head was throbbing a few days later when I went to see the doctor who stuck a needle into my skull and withdrew a huge chunk of puss. He said if I let it go much longer it could have been fatal. I got over Ross that night but I finished with most of the damage

I knew Ross aka Mixy well during the 1960’s. He could fight but for some reason starting carrying and using a knife in street fights. He ended up being charged eventually but luckily for him the guy who was stabbed did not want to proceed
Mixy settled down I heard living in Glebe and working on the wharves
