The game has changed in a ridiculously significant fashion since the one era to another. It's tough to evaluate such matchups. In a modern rules boxing match Ward would outclass the Dempsey like brawler, who was effective with the foulish by the current standards roughouse tactics, where the ref barely interfered the action and where it was allowed to hit a floored opponent right after he gets up. Ward was faster, more athletic, technical and smart boxer than Dempsey. With the modern rules he could have recovered even in a case of being tagged. Back in his times or in the street Dempsey could provide Jess Willard on Ward, but it's tough to pick against Andre in a boxing match in its modern definition.
