Salvador Sanchez, what if?

Post by NYDominican »

Out of Salvador Sanchez's great professional boxing career. ------- He had impressive wins against Danny Lopez, Ruben Castillo, Patrick Ford, Juan LaPorte, Roberto Castanon, Wilfredo Gomez, Pat Cowdell, Azumah Nelson, and Juan Escobar.

Salvador's win's over Danny Lopez (twice), Juan LaPorte, Wilfredo Gomez, Pat Cowdell, and Azumah Nelson were VERY impressive.

Sanchez was known for his chin strength, threshold of pain, stamina, and great heart. Tragically, he was killed on August 12, 1982, in a car accident. He was only 23. Had Salvador not been killed at 23, had he lived and fought for another 15 years. -------

1. Do you think Sanchez would have moved up in weight, won titles at higher weight divisions?

2. Do you think that Salvador would have scaled heights in boxing such as what Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon, and possibly what Sugar Ray Robinson scaled?

Sanchez was great. Lots of really good fighters back then.As good as he was I can't picture him defeating Arguello in their proposed Superfight.Arguello was known for the same strengths as Sanchez plus hit so much harder.
Sanchez only edge would be in speed.
There were other super fights on the horizon that I think would have really made him a Mega star, like a unification with Pedroza, which I think Sanchez would win. Rematches with Lockridge and Laporte,Nelson Up and coming fighters,JC Chavez,Mario Martinez,Mayweather,Camacho. Champion @130 Sammy Serrano.
Who knows how great he would have become?

At some point he would have lost a super fight against someone in the coming years if he would have not died.

He would have had fights with Alexis Arguello, maybe a rematches with Azumah Nelson and Wilfredo Gomez, an unification with Eusebio Pedroza and fights awaiting at him at 130lbs with Hector "Macho" Camacho, Julio Cesar Chavez and maybe Roger Mayweather and Rocky Lockridge. That would have been a lot of fights in succesion.

Was he capable of winning all those fights? Yes. But, I think that he would have at least 1 or 2 losses on that hectic schedule.

He was great. Probably he wouldn't defeat Arguello earlier in the 80s, but he could outlast him and win closer to the middle of the decade. He is a one of the greatest featherweights with the achievements he was able to get, but he could be even greater, yes.

My guess is Sanchez, who was having trouble making the Featherweight limit, was in the gym at 135 and felt great. If that's the case, you can forget the Arguello would be just be too big and strong for him argument.

I think (and thought at the time) that Sanchez would have lost the proposed fight against Arguello at lightweight. After that I could see him moving down to 130 and winning a title in that division. Come to think of it I could see him winning against Arguello at 130 given the issues Arguello had making that weight. But the fight was proposed at lightweight if I recall.

Arguello was a lightweight at the time when Sanchez' camp started making the negotiations for the fight in 1982. But Sanchez' untimely death in the car crash changed all that.

Dying young at the top of your game does a lot for your legacy, Rematches with Gómez and Nelson in late 1982 or 83 would have been interesting, The Gómez who slapped around LaPorte and was beating Nelson until he got caught at 126 wasn’t the overconfident Gómez who thought he was indestructible and walked into punches in the 1st round and was all but out of the fight in the first three minutes. Nelson would have learned from the first fight as well and the outcome might have been different, considering how close the first fight was. Sanchez might have beaten them both in a rematch, but IMO it wasn’t certain. I also would have liked to have seen him vs Pedroza.. Wouldn’t have been a pretty fight, because no Pedroza fight was, but it would have been interesting
