Did anyone happen to see The Repair Shop on BBC1 the other day? I was flicking through the channels and stopped on this as they were restoring a boxing trophy two sons had bought onto the show that belonged to their dad Ray Fallone. I'm not familiar with him but one of the sons said he was never stopped in 100 fights which they said was a Guinness world record at the time.

Checking his record out he was obviously a tough journeyman, however it lists 99 fights for him (not 100) and shows it as 20-74-5. It does show he was stopped three times though, one was recorded as a TKO but the other two were by retirement due to injury.

I remember Ray Fallone well. He did have 100 fights because it was a big story in Boxing News at the time and Ray was rightly heralded for his effort. The feeling was that Ray would be the last centurion in domestic boxing because the sport went through a real slump in the 1970s.

This is an interesting thing you have picked on, and it has puzzled me for some years now because I think that Ray only had 99 contests. As Bennie correctly states this was a big deal when he had his last, supposedly his hundredth, contest in 1975.

In Boxing News dated Dec 5 1969 his record up to that point was published. All of the bouts listed up to that point are included in my record and the one on Boxrec. Boxing News actually missed one on the record that they published (March 5 1969 at Manchester). Ray had one more bout in 1969 taking his total to 52. He then had 12 in 1970 taking his total to 64. However, the 1971 Boxing News annual listed his record at the end of 1970 as 65 bouts, 15-3-47. They also have 12 bouts in 1970. So where did the extra bout come from? They either found one, no doubt fought abroad, between his record being published by them in 1969 and again in 1970, or they miscounted in the 1971 annual.

Bottom line is that I have only ever found 99 and this agrees with Boxrec.

Interesting thank you Miles, it would seem odd if he did fight abroad considering all his listed fights are in the UK but I guess a possibility.

Yes, odd fights taken abroad were occasionally missed by Boxing News and then added much later. My gut feeling is that Ray actually only had 99. Would love to have this confirmed. He was an excellent fighter back then, much better than his record suggests.

I remember Cardiff's Billy Waith claiming 100 fights in the 1980s when everyone else had him a few fights short of the 100 (boxrec has 94) but Fallone's 99 is a strange one because he was more than capable of one extra fight.

I think it is possible he believed the figure in the 1971 annual (which was added to each year in all other annuals) and went with that. I am going to ask Harold Alderman what he thinks about it.

Ray Fallone, pre covid, was a regular at London ex Boxers Association meetings. Looked very well for a guy with 100 fights that is for sure.

Ray was hugely respected in the trade for his ringcraft and his willingness to help promoters out. Boxing News did a two-page spread on him just before his ton.
