It's Ali for Me

Post by JohnP2 »

So for all you young cats coming up as fans, here is one more 'old head' who is coming correct when it comes too the Greatest of all time. My dad worked at the 5th street gym. I first saw Ali fight (live) against Spinks I. I was young but clearly remember Spinks' team going nuts they were so happy...but then 100% of the talk was "Ali lost" But I seen them all since Frazier, Shavers, Lyle, Foreman, up through Mike, to Lennox, Evander, Big Daddy, through today.
If I had to bet my life, I'd gamble that Ali beats them all (prime v prime). Ali was no runt. He was THE first big man who could mandhandle Foreman and outbox him when he wanted then do the do.

Mike is second. Cayton did a masterpiece job promoting him (like he said, it was just roll film, send out people see it and know.). It was what it was...by far the most viscous run in Heavyweight history. Ali is too seasoned and understands winning more than Mike (and I been KNOWING Mike since 86....so I tell it to his face and he agrees. Mike definitely the most knowledgeable boxer in history. Instead of school, Cayton gave him access to the greatest boxing video library in the world Mike could very well be THE top boxing historian alive today. F*cking LOVE it. So yeah, you guys who are just getting in to the sport--congrats you now know where its at--and now you heard from one more person who lived through it...I gotta go with Ali. Just educate yourself and form your own opinion...no one can really make a strong argument either way.

It will always be a contentious argument, people have their favourites and biases and I think many confuse the 'best ever' with 'who can beat who in a head to head'

Being great is about what you did and achieved in your era, not what others have achieved before or afterwards and that line often gets blurred. So when people start saying things like 'well fighter XYZ is overrated as he would be too small against todays HWs', they are missing the point and comparing apples with oranges.
