Hearn leaving Sky for DAZN

Post by Boxing Prospect »

According to the Athletic Hearn and Sky are pretty much done after current contract ends, and he'll be off to DAZN, barring Whyte and Joshua apparently

I find it really strange people seem to dislike Sky so much. Yes - they have occasional shite PPVs but they’re the only station that’s consistently shown boxing in the last 20 years.

If they decide to drop boxing altogether, will people be happy?

AJ and his team are seemingly smart enough to recognise the power of Sky and how good of a job they do of promoting boxing in the UK on their multiple channels and thus doesnt want to jump ship.

Ps I have a feeling this will all end in tears. Not for Eddie/matchroom who are making a lot off the deal, but end in tears because if DAZN have really spent 9 figures plus on a 5 year deal, how can they possibly think they're going to recoup that investment, when the deal doesn't even include Joshua or Whyte, both of whom are probably the biggest draws in the sport in the UK market (well Joshua for sure)

I think the biggest stakeholder, the billionaire guy, and investors generally are going to end up pulling the plug.

The only way I can see it succeeding is, If Sky pull out of boxing altogether (which is definitely possible) and DAZN and Sky come to some kind of agreement whereby DAZN pays Sky to have their fighters on their numerous broadcast outlets to promote them like they do with fighters contracted to Sky at the moment.

Also DAZN is going to substantially increase the price of their subscriptions. It just won't be viable otherwise.

This does leave a Sauerland sized gap in sky sports' boxing schedule.

Also, I imagine this is also leading to a bump in DAZN UK prices. My only concern is being able to watch this in the pub. I imagine quite a few places won't be willing to pay for Sky, BT and then DAZN on top.

Whilst their commentary and what have you leaves a lot to be desired. They're also the best at promoting the sport in the country.

This will show how good of a promoter Eddie truly is.

It needs to be nine figures for it to stack up. I'd estimate 500 million over the five years to enable enough big cards to keep and grow the subscriber base.

Matchroom will still find a way to put on mismatches I bet, even with a huge budget.

Define substantially? £5, £10, £20+ per month?

They'll model it out but I'm not sure going over a tenner would be wise with only boxing to offer.

DAZN'S investors want football and until a couple of days ago thought they were getting it.

Their objective is to get a huge global subscriber base paying small money per month. They'll not achieve that with boxing alone.

I'm not even sure, but if they're spending 9 figures on a 5 year deal for the UK market alone, it's going to take a decent increase in the pay point to recoup the original investment alone, let alone make a profit. That or they'll need a hell of a lot of subscribers to make it worthwhile.

I'd be guessing £19.99 to match the US, but for the quantity of content, and a 10 time price rise inside a year, there will be a huge backlash.

Then again I'm no sure if their competition will necessarily be Sky/BT though, but instead Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney ("entertainment" as opposed to "sports TV"), and if so their price points might make things tricky...

...also is there a way for pubs to license DAZN?

Is it just for the UK market? I thought Matchroom were getting the gig globally?

It will be way less than I said if it's just UK.

Quite a lot of the biggest companies in the world are forever never turning a profit Uber, Snap, Tesla (until recently), Airbnb are just a few examples. Some of those have burnt through cash like there's no tomorrow. Billionaires and Billion dollar companies have a knack for getting loans and investments to keep them afloat until they start making money. Although DAZN's finances aren't great, it's not as bad as it may appears in my opinion given its backers, age and marketing model.

Whilst it's not a surprise, it is a massive end of an era and could be a huge mistake.

When Dazn USA first came on the scene there was talk of a good relationship with sky....even with Dazn uk, Adam and Eddie were keen to stress there was no conflict of interest....oops

fornicate sky.

I do get DAZN live stuff on my IPTV but if this is true ill probs download and sub for a bit if only to see what the app is like.

Sky sports box office can/will probably make deals for the UK PPV fighters but i am interested to see the matchroom boxing - DAZN partnership go global.

Oh I agree on Netflix and Uber and the like, but I'm just not sure that DAZN has that kind of backing whereby they have investors who will be willing to just keep pumping money into the operation in the same way. DAZN and the app still seem kind of low brow to me when I compare it to the likes of Netflix.

I'd imagine the rights deals are far cheaper in Germany though.
