Ron McLean was a top welterweight in 1970 having fifteen professional fights mostly at South Sydney Juniors. I got to know him when I met him in StMarys after he had retired in 1976. He started training at my gym at the same time Australian light middleweight champion Shane Patrick was training there. Ron asked to spar one of the novice boxers there and went hard in the spar. Shane asked me to arrange a spar between Ron and him
I did and Shane gave Ron a tough workout but Ron boxed well. I heard Ron had a bad accident as a rigger and suffered severe injuries. Ron was a classy boxer.
