Sergio Martinez ranked 3rd by WBA @ MW

Post by peter barlow »

In their latest rankings WBA have a 46 year old Sergio Martinez as 3rd ranking middleweight despite him only having 2 fights, against journeyman, in the past 7 years.

Mark de Mori has re entered the HW top 10 despite only fighting journeymen for 5 and a half years.

How much did these "rankings" cost and what is the plan here. You'd have to hope this organisation comes to the attention of anti corruption policing at some stage. Its now farcical.

They now have WBA Super, Regular, Interim and Recess beltholders parading around as World Champions in every weightclass.

They should be blackballed and consigned to history.

Between the WBA having delusional ranking systems and the WBC creating as many Toys R Us belts as they can... Boxing is really in need of a change and the changes only going to come when fighters and promoters straight up that they don't want any part of their belts nor do they want to be ranked by them.

By the time he steps foot inside the ring for his next bout against Blackpool’s Brian Rose, Sergio Martinez would have only defeated two journeymen within the previous 7½ years.

The last time Sergio Martinez "officially" defeated a world-rated opponent was more than eight years ago, when he was gifted a controversial hometown decision over Martin Murray.

So you could realistically argue that Sergio Martinez hasn’t scored a legitimate victory over a world class opponent since 2012.

De Mori has defeated nine horrendously bad journeymen within the last 5½ years that have suffered a combined total of 146 losses (an average of 16 defeats each).

That’s an embarrassing statistic!

I agree.

By the way, I feel that both men have been awarded excessively flattering ratings to be fed to big-name prospects/contender (i.e. Mark De Mori versus Daniel Dubois, Charles Martin or Trevor Bryan).

It’s a win-win situation for the promoters and the WBA.

These dodgy ratings allow promoters to sell fights to the ignorant mainstream masses, persuading their viewing audience that their guys have destroyed a world-rated opponent.

And of course, the WBA will be compensated by receiving sanctioning fees.

For the record, Efe Ajagba was rated 11th at heavyweight last month, but he has now been removed from the WBA’s rankings, with Mark De Mori now rated 10th.

WBA should follow WBC, create bridgerweight and make Fres with Sergio fight for their version of the title. Also, they should make Guillermo Jones and Beibut Shumenov candidates for the Regular belt.

On a related note (i.e. the WBA’s outrageously bad ratings)…

The 50-year-old Firat Aslan, who possesses a Mark De Mori type record, is rated fourth in the WBA’s cruiserweight rankings.

He’s suffered a stoppage defeat and also drew against Sefer Seferi within the last three years. Over the same timeframe, he’s only defeated five opponents, each one failing to win an average of 13 bouts.

First Aslan wasn’t even rated by the WBA until his most recent victory in March over Ruben Eduardo Acosta (a man that has 17 losses and 5 draws on his resume).

He hasn’t fought since that date but has continued to climb the rankings from 8th to 4th.

The WBA should be boycotted, but it’s difficult to do this, because all the big promoters continue to work with that utterly rancid organisation!
