Shane Mosley Reveals He Bet $1M On Himself To Beat Canelo In 2012 Loss When Purse Was $600K

“Sugar” Shane Mosley’s unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez not only impacted his professional record but his wallet as well, the Hall of Fame fighter has revealed.

"They were gonna pay me $600,000 [for the Alvarez fight], but I made a bet for a million dollars that I was gonna beat Canelo, and if I would've won I’d have $6 million," Mosley told Mario Lopez on “OK Bet.”

"I was thinking this snot nose kid is not gonna beat me at 154 [pounds]. I had to pay $400,000 for getting my butt kicked. Canelo got me."

Mosley was 40-years-old and Alvarez was 21 at the time when the fight took place on May 5, 2012 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Alvarez cruised to a win with scores of 110-118 and 109-119 twice and outlanded Mosley 348 to 183 in the fight.

Mosley retired in 2016 with a record of 49 wins (41 KOs), 10 losses and 1 draw.

The three-division champion was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.

In an interview with Boxing Scene last year, Mosley dished high praise toward Alvarez.

“The fighter of the decade [from 2010 to 2019] for me was Canelo Alvarez,” said Mosley. “He moved up in weight from 154 to 160, 168, 175, and he dominated. He fights all of the best fighters out there.

“Canelo is a man now. When I fought him he was 22 years old. He was really good and I was impressed by him when I was in the ring with him. I really was trying to use my experience and walk him down because he didn’t know as much as I did. He has a great corner and a great team. The coaching is spectacular. They make him throw punches the right way. He has great reaction, punching power, speed. The guy is a total package. He’s pound-for-pound the best right now. He knows old school and new school. I was surprised by the knowledge that he had. He beat me, and it’s obvious that he’s a great.”

I strongly suspect that Shane Mosley is talking pure nonsense, because he’s an attention seeker trying to gain attention from the media.

Why on earth would the 40½ year old iteration of a past-his-prime huge underdog that hadn’t won one fight within 3½ years (or only two fights in almost five years) place a $1m bet on himself to defeat the massive betting favourite (a world champion, undefeated in forty bouts, engaging in his fifth world title fight)?

Regardless the dates printed on Canelo’s birth certificate, the Mexican had been competing in the pro ranks for 6½ years (with five of his wins coming against former/current world champions) when Mosley fought him.

To put that timeframe into perspective, 6½ years into Anthony Joshua’s pro career, the Brit had already avenged the Ruiz Jr. defeat and was only a few months away from his 10th world title fight against Kubrat Pulev.

Nobody accuses AJ of being a novice, which means the version of Canelo that Mosley faced was an experienced pro.

I think that its true.

I don't dislike Shane on the contrary it wouldn't surprise me to find out that he is a pleasant person to be around but the fellow has a long history of making bad decisions.

1. Giving Vernon Forrest a shot when nobody was calling for that fight. Shane's best weight would have been 140. Why fight Forrest who he should have known to be dangerous.

2. Going up to Jr Middleweight to fight boogeyman Ronald Wright. Absolutely pointless.

3. Getting punked out of his shares at Goldenboy promotions.

4. Engaging in the ridiculous fight vs Ricardo Mayorga trying to use sexual harassment to sell the fight.

5. Getting involved with a stripper/prostitute and marrying the girl.

Lets add 6. Betting a million dollars on himself to beat Canelo.

At Lightweight being a weightdraining bully Sugar Shane was superman and unbeatable. Unfortunantly that went to his head and he left that division never losing his belief that he had some super human abilities which outside of Lightweight he really didn't.

Fiction from Shane. There is little doubt Mosley was contracted to throw the fight and play soft for the future franchise cash now. The bet was not made (show the proof) and $600,000 is very good pay for what was essentially a soft sparring session.

Mosley is likely reminding Canelo of the favor he did and probably needs some kind of form of a return of favor.

Remember, everything in the mainstream media is fake news, propaganda or media manipulation. Everything.

Sugar Shane was a real champion, real fighter, total class act. He had no fear of anyone and he never ducked anyone, except maybe Margarito, to fight Forrest was something fraud weather would never do.

Shane should have made a lot more money in his career. He tried to be a smiling charismatic guy like Leonard but for some reason it didn't quite happen. Maybe being in Oscar's shadow cost him superstardom. Great fighter, maybe had too much bravery and honor, to duck and rig fights in his favor.
