Manny Pacquiao says boxing career is over!

"Manny Pacquiao says boxing career is over as he begins presidential campaign"

Manny Pacquiao may have thrown his last punch in a boxing ring.

The 42-year-old boxing legend says his career is already in the rearview mirror as he gears up to run for Philippine president in the 2022 elections, set for May 9. Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 knockouts) made the comments to television host Toni Gonzaga on her YouTube program.

“My boxing career? My boxing career is already over,” said Pacquiao, according to a translation from Rappler.com.

“It’s done because I’ve been in boxing for a long time and my family says that it is enough. I just continued [to box] because I’m passionate about this sport.”

Pacquiao, an eight division world champion and future Hall of Famer, was last in the ring a month ago, losing an upset unanimous decision to late replacement Yordenis Ugas. Pacquiao’s personal assistant David Sisson had commented on Twitter earlier this month that Pacquiao was “most likely” to fight again in December or early January.

Pacquiao says he will continue his out-of-the-ring involvement with the sport through his MP Promotions company, which oversees the careers of WBO bantamweight titleholder John Riel Casimero, IBF junior bantamweight titleholder Jerwin Ancajas and featherweight contender Mark Magsayo.

“I will just support other boxers for us to have a champion again.”

This isn’t the first time Pacquiao has announced his retirement before running for higher office. Pacquiao had declared that his third bout with Timothy Bradley in April of 2016 would be his final bout, just a month before his election for the Philippine senate.

Pacquiao won the senate seat, and would be back in the ring less than seven months later, decisioning Jessie Vargas before fighting five more times.

Yeah, fair play to him, he's had an incredible career.

Got to be on pretty much anybody's top 10 ATG, and in his absolute prime was thrilling to watch. I'll never forget the destruction of Barrera, you could have scooped my jaw off of the floor.

As far as modern day fighters go, he’s given absolutely everything to his craft. An ATG, no question. As brave as they come.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the whole 8 div world champ moniker not strictly correct? As far as I can tell, if you're just looking at the 4 main world titles, didn't he only win one of those in 4 weight classes? Fly, Super Bantam, Super Feather and Welter? Or am I missing something?

Good luck for him either way, because he is jumping from the pan to the grill.

• WBC = Flyweight
• IBF = Super Bantamweight
• WBC = Super Featherweight
• WBC = Lightweight
• WBO & WBA = Welterweight
• WBC = Super Welterweight

Manny only captured the Lineal/The RING titles at Featherweight (beating Marco Antonio Barrera) and Junior Welterweight (beating Ricky Hatton). He didn't capture titles from the main four governing bodies competing at those two weight classes.

In my mind, I personally refuse to recognise Manny's WBC 154lbs title winning effort, because Manny demanded a 150lbs catchweight for the Antonio Margarito bout.

Speaking of Margarito, Both Arum and Pacquiao are sacks of crap the way they pubicly lobbied to get Margarito his license back to box for the joke title at 150.

TBH, he had a close fight against a fighter much, much bigger than him and a stylistic nightmare for him. I wish he would retire, but it's not like he lost to Chris Algieri or Sadam Ali or something like that. I think I even scored it a draw, IIRC.

Yeah, he's got to be top 10 material surely.

Faced pretty much everyone he could have in his era, his last win over Thurman was pretty incredible for a fighter of his age.
