Derrell Coley: Where do you rate him at weltereight?

Post by Jaywheel »

Where do you rank this slick and sweet fighter from Maryland, USA? He is another one of my favorite great Oscarito's opponents.

A swift boxer puncher with great resilience and fast left jab, was NABF champion twice, losing his North American title in a razor thin decision to the great Oba Carr only to regain it like a true champ .

By the way, I would like to meet him someday. I like his My Space page, check it out, it loads really fast!!:

Was he Washington's DC greatest fighter? Or William Joppy with a win over Duran? Hard to tell since Joppy was NEVER North American champion.

Was Coley the greatest welterweight from Washington DC or is it Lamont Peterson? Peterson has a strong case with his USNBC, NABO and especially his interim NABF title.

I think that Derrell Coley was a special fighter. He was a fight short of greatness if Oscarito wouldn't been on the scene. But he was in over his head when he challenged him for the prestigious vacant IBA welterweight title.

His nickname is 2 sweet but imagine if he would have been british, he could have been the British Coley. Imagine if he would have been sporting a beard, he could have been the Bearded Coley. Lots of missed opportunities. That's a common trait of a many Oscarito's opponents after facing him...

To be champion of North America TWICE and get a Sugar Ray Leonard Award tells us something
