Press Release

Conor Benn will defend his WBA Continental Welterweight Title against South Africa’s Chris Van Heerden at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday April 16, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding New Zealand and Australia).

‘The Destroyer’ (20-0, 13 KOs) secured a stunning knockout win over former World Champion Chris Algieri last time out in December, taking out the American with a brutal right hand in the fourth round of their top of the bill clash at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.

The 25-year-old contender from Essex holds top ten rankings with the WBA, WBO and IBF after notching three wins during a breakout 2021 – and the British star believes that 2022 will be an even bigger year for him as he works towards a World Title shot.

‘The Heat’ (28-2-1, 12 KOs), born in Johannesburg, South Africa, previously held the IBO Welterweight World Title from 2011 until 2013, beating Kaizer Mabuza, Sebastian Andres Lujan and Matthew Hatton during his Title reign.

Now residing in Santa Monica, California, USA the 34-year-old southpaw is eager to test himself against one of the fastest rising Welterweights in world boxing and should provide valuable rounds having only been stopped once by Errol Spence in 32 fights.

A huge undercard sees Bournemouth’s European Cruiserweight Champion Chris Billam-Smith (14-1, 10 KOs) rematch Belfast’s former champion Tommy McCarthy (18-3, 9 KOs) following their epic back and forth battle at the Matchroom HQ last summer.

‘The Gentleman’ withstood a late fightback from McCarthy as he edged out a narrow split points decision to add the British and European Cruiserweight Titles to his Commonwealth Title, before defending his EBU crown with a points win over Dylan Bregeon in Sheffield.

Manchester Super-Featherweight contender Zelfa Barrett (27-1, 16 KOs) looks to build on his impressive IBF World Title Eliminator win over Australia’s Bruno Tarimo on the Parker vs. Chisora 2 undercard when he challenges European Champion Faroukh Kourbanov (19-3, 3 KOs) – a former opponent of Joe Cordina.

Hard hitting Cruiserweight talent Jordan Thompson (12-0, 10 KOs) has scored two big first round knockouts since putting pen to paper on a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn last June, and the 28-year-old from Manchester will be out to impress his home fans again as he works towards his first Title shot in 2022.

Hyde Lightweight prospect Campbell Hatton (6-0, 2 KOs) quickly returns to action after earning the best win of his career over Joe Ducker last month, Little Lever’s Jack Cullen (20-3-1, 9 KOs) aims to bounce back from his stoppage loss to Kevin Lele Sadjo in December and Alnwick Welterweight Cyrus Pattinson (3-0, 1 KO) hopes to make it two wins from two fights in 2022.

"I’m excited to step into the ring with Chris Van Heerden," said Benn. "Van Heerden is a tough operator and a southpaw who will be in there giving it his all in every round. For me and my team it’s now about fighting every style that we can face as we continue to head towards World Championship status and Van Heerden brings something different to the table than I’ve not faced before.

"With that being said this is another stepping stone for me on my journey to the top, I haven’t seen anything in Van Heerden’s previous fights that I can’t deal with, and I expect another explosive victory on April 16. If he comes to fight or he wants to box, I can deliver that smoke either way! The AO Arena has to be one of the most exciting venues to fight in. I love Manchester. I get shown a lot of love and support up in Manchester – it’s a fighting city. I bring the entertainment every time I fight and I can’t wait for April 16.”

"Sometimes it takes 10 years for that one year to come around that completely changes your life," said Van Heerden. "This is my year. I want to thank Conor Benn for taking the fight, knowing that I'm coming to beat him in his backyard. I also want to thank Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing for taking this risk and my manager Peter Kahn for getting this fight done. I am looking forward to putting on a show in Manchester on DAZN."

“Conor Benn is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in British Boxing and he faces by far the toughest test of his career to date when he takes on Chris Van Heerden in Manchester on April 16,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Van Heerden has mixed at the very highest level and faced fearsome Welterweight ‘Boots’ Ennis last time out before the fight was ruled a no contest due to a clash of heads - he always comes to fight, and I expect a gruelling battle for Conor. We are building an action-packed card and already announce the rematch of one of the Fight of the Year contender between Chris Billam-Smith and Tommy McCarthy and local star Zelfa Barrett challenges for the European Title. I expect another blistering statement from Conor Benn live worldwide on DAZN.”

“We are excited to welcome back one of the brightest prospects in boxing, Conor Benn, to the platform when he takes on former IBO Welterweight Champion Chris Van Heerden on April 16,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights at DAZN. “This is another huge test for Conor as he continues his quest to capture a World Title in 2022. We pride ourselves in having the best schedule in boxing, and with the announce of this matchup in April and early May you will see Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia, GGG, Taylor vs. Serrano and Conor all fighting live on DAZN.”

-------------------
Eddie Hearn names two more possible opponents for Conor Benn and provides update on Adrien Broner talks

Eddie Hearn has named Robert Guerrero and Maurice Hooker as possible opponents for Conor Benn in April if the Adrien Broner fight cannot be made.

Benn enjoyed a superb 2021, scoring superb knockout victories over Samuel Vargas and Chris Algieri either side of a comprehensive points win over Adrian Granados.

The Ilford fighter is eager for his next test to come against 32-year-old Broner, a four-weight world champion and one-time protégé of Floyd Mayweather who would serve as a huge scalp on Benn’s record.

But if a deal can’t be done in time for Benn’s next outing in spring, his promoter has named 38-year-old Guerrero, a two-weight world champion who has taken Mayweather, Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia the distance, as one option.

Former WBO champion Hooker, coming off the back of a defeat of another red-hot welterweight in Vergil Ortiz Jr, is also in the running.

‘He’ll be out in April and we’re just finalising his fight now,’ said Hearn told DAZN.

‘We’d love the [Adrien] Broner fight but we’ll have to see.

‘I like Robert Guerrero, I like Maurice Hooker. I like all these kinds of fights because they give us names with profile and they’re the right tests.’

Broner meanwhile is game for a showdown with Benn but is eager to get a tune-up fight under his belt first having fought just once since January 2019.

‘I have spoken to Broner and ideally he wants a fight before he fights Conor because he is on this crusade of seriousness, can you believe?’ Hearn said.

‘He wants to have one last run at it and that means being prepared for the Conor fight.

‘He stressed he is ready to fight Conor Benn but that he would like a warm-up fight in March if possible.’

I quite like the Hooker fight. I thought he was competitive with Ortiz and it would be a small step up for Conor.

Less of a fan of the Guerrero fight.

Hearn doesn't really have anyone else does he..

Well he does.. but you know what I mean..

I hope it's Hooker..

But if Benn beats Guerrero, he'll just say, he wants a challenge, this wasn't a challenge, bla bla bla.

Even when he loses, he'll still be saying he wants a better challenge. :yay:

hookers who i predicted for his next one, benn will defo fight him at some point, he's just too perfect for the benn matching algorithm.

another guy with a good mix of being recognizable/having notable past achievements, who seems like he could provide some learning experience, while also clearly having a favourable trajectory for benn:

would be inactive for over a year
took a stoppage pounding in that last fight
hasnt won since 2019 and its 2022 now
every notable result at a lower weight
went 7 with ortiz like sammy salsa vargas and won a round to set up another 'benn did it faster/better' thingy

this is skillful matchmaking (similar points for guerrero), striking that balance between what a guy has been known for and where he's actually at now. you get 'good fight' etc while still having everything tilted for benn's favour. not to say it would be a meaningless fight or anything, benn can learn from it and hooker would present length and some awkwardness he hasn't seen before. and ive never seen hooker pull survival mode.

broner keeps being mentioned, and with how desperate he seems these days i could even see him coming to the uk. benn beats him too. another smartly matched fight that meets all the criteria. they are doing well with benn, just as a fan i think he's good enough to take on better welters and is closer to being a legit contender than to this raw unschooled kid he's been known as for so long.

Guerrero is too old and well past it, even more so than Algieri.
Broner is finished at the top level and would just be a name on the record, although the build up might be spicy.
Hooker is probably the one I say is still fairly relevant.

I still want the Avanesyan fight though and Frank did say that he would pay his man to take the fight which would save Eddie a few quid.

Big fan of Guerrero at his peak, thought he was underrated. Guerrero version 2022 - not sure he is a step up from Algeri.

He'll be facing De La Hoya or maybe even Chavez Snr next. "Benn beat them in more decisively than these champs..."

2022 potential opponents: Guerrero, Khan, Brook, Broner, hooker... If he fights 3 of them or similar id say 2022 is a big success.

for me, 2022 is non elite money fight year for benn, but vs people that can fight back. then

2023 is position for as weak a title shot as possible. mabey when spence moves up a vacant shot at which ever belt mr boots and ortiz arnt going for.

Benn is going at a fine rate, iv never seen people insist someone that was basicaly a novice 3 years ago should be fighting the top guys in the most elite division in all of boxing..., thing that gets people fired up is Eddie calling him a super star and insisting he will fight for a belt 2022, ignore him eddie is a promoter for fuks sake.

youve never seen it because it's not happening. people calling for him to fight top welters would be calling for him to fight the likes of spence, crawford, ennis.....dont see anyone doing that. no one is even calling him for him to fight 2nd tier below that.

fair not top top top mabey. Seen people calling for Ugas, avasanya, ortiz Jr.... mabey they arnt spence and craw, but some people are calling him a hype job because he wont fight those guys when he is 25, and was genuinly pretty shit a few years ago... I think a lot of people have a chip on there shoulder about the easy hype he got from his name and are now just in a hurry to see him get beat..

It officially became tedious when non-puncher Algeri was selected last time for Benn, now it's worse because there's still no sign of a truly competitive 50/50 contest.

They're often referred to as "Haters" who are down on the likes of Benn for no reason, but fans turn when they are being short changed and conned.

This has become a daylight con-job and it's no wonder there will be British fans rooting for the other guy :KO:

Guerrero v Ortiz was an interesting fight because they were both obviously past it. It’s insane to feed him to Benn who will probably overwhelm him within 5/6 rounds.
Not a true representation of Benn again.
Forget Broner as well; he’s a light welter.
Ava please.
Hooker is a light welter as well…. He has no meaningful wins at 147lbs.
Benn could in hindsight be one of the biggest hype/con jobs since Audley.
Seems we won’t find out for ages.
It’s weird as I do like Benn and am a fan.
Just fight a live, sub 32 year old, top 15 ranked welter.

I think we just have to accept that Benn is way too valuable to Matchroom for them to risk him in any kind of meaningful matchup for a long time yet.

I don't actually blame Hearn. It's frustrating because there are plenty of really good fights they could make, a step back from world level with good quality welterweights who aren't past their peak which would be close to 50/50 fights. But they have got nobody else with crossover appeal really and you only need to look at the schedule to see all the bluster last year from Hearn about what DAZN would do for the sport in the UK really has been total bullshit. It's just a reasonably priced way of watching some decent boxing, much of it in the middle of the night.

I find Eddie Hearn’s excessive promotion of Conor Benn as the potential second coming of Jesus Christ somewhat depressing.

How far has Eddie fallen, that he’s trying to cultivate Conor Benn as his new golden goose? Sad sad times. Eddie surely now realising just how powerful the Sky hype machine actually is.

I was speaking to someone close to Chris Billam-Smith and apparently he and one or two others are not so impressed with the lack of push from, and reach of DAZN.

Is he? He'll only say "ask Tony". Hearn virtually grassed Benn up in his IFL interview. Said McKilsen was up against the best prospect and Spence and Crawford are levels above. Ok, I agree, but don't then tell me Benn is unstoppable. Maybe against the top 10 of 2010.

benn’s opponents seem in accordance with his ranked status:

WBC 5
IBF 6
WBA 5
WBO 7

i think he’s good enough to get to a number 1 spot and challenge for a belt

Why wouldn’t he promote him like that ? He looks the part, says all the right things, can fight a bit and he has the name Benn, some guys are just easy to promote and he’s one of em, they had several options in how they moved and developed him and I think they’ve done perfectly in that respect, I think his first loss is looming soon but it won’t stop him being a great tv fighter and having a decent career.

He's , young , brash and confident , up till now backing his mouth up , some could say what more do you want , a gift from heaven to matchroom .

OR

He's young , he's cocky , he's a big mouth who talks a lot of shite and believes his own publicity , . and he's not pushed for any fight whatsoever , unless you count pushing for fights with old men 10 years past there prime who could never punch anyway , and fought in there prime at lower weights .

Me ,,, I believe he's somewhere in the middle leaning more towards the second choice .... He only needs to fight ONE FIGHT with someone in or close to there prime , thats a 50-50 fight , win that and become a real fan favorite in Britain that could out strip AJ .

That fight and fighter is waiting in the wings , ready to dispel the matchroom myth , the Benn bravado , the hype and the bullshit , or make Benn An absolute british SUPERSTAR that will overtake his dads status , hiS intials are D A ,,, but alas , it seems Benn does'nt have the Benns to take that fight and risk it ,, Nope he conviniently ducks that question with i'll leave it too my management and trainer who i fight , while he calls out olme past there prime .

When you get to the stage Benn is ,, then Eddie works for you , and if you demand it you will get it ... Conor is only his own boss when it suits him ... But since we have no chance of him fighting a 50-50 livewire fight ,,, i would love the winner of Khan Brooks to call him out , because i honestly think both stop him inside 6 rnds

Eddie Hearn’s career is really going down the pan if he’s putting all his efforts into someone who has been steered so carefully around domestic and European level. And when I say steered around, I actually mean avoided.

Hearn once had solid world champions who could sell out arenas around the country like Carl Froch, Kell Brook along with genuine prospects like Carl Frampton. Now he’s super-carefully navigating through the likes of Conor Benn and Campbell Hatton based on the fact that they are trading off their dad’s names... not for me.

Conor Benn is talking about having a world title fight in 2022. Do we even know if he’s the best 147lbs’er in the UK. There’s something wrong about all this. Just my opinion.

By the way, good luck to Conor Benn. He’s earning a living in a tough game and training like a demon and clearly improving. But what’s wrong with British, Commonwealth and European before being ready for a properly earned world title shot? Sad times for the game domestically.
