Boxing Dropped From 2028 LA Olympics (for now?)

Post by jimmystone »

The IOC are trying to appeal to a younger audience and are looking to shelve some sports from the Olympic programme and replace them with others. Boxing (because of corruption), weightlifting (because of systemic doping) and Modern Pentathlon (because of animal welfare and elitism) have not been included in the 2028 schedule for now.

"Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon could be added to the programme next year if they successfully demonstrate they have addressed issues within their sports.

Boxing's international federation, the AIBA, must show it has addressed concerns around the sport's governance and the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes.

In September, an independent investigation found a system to manipulate the outcome of boxing matches by officials was in place at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Weightlifting must address the historic issue of doping within the sport, while modern pentathlon must finalise its replacement of showjumping, while increasing its appeal to young people." Source BBC

Here's the rub:

USA were 10th in the medal rankings in boxing

USA were 12th in the medal rankings in weightlifting

USA won no medals in Modern Pentathlon

Hard to propagandise and commercialise those crappy results.

Every other sport in the Olympics has a dodgy record with doping too.

Total disgrace. I though boxing cleaned their act up a lot in 2020. Money corrupting the games as usual.

Not only is boxing one of the original Olympic sports it truly embodies the Olympic ideal. You can come out of a slum and become champion.

What about dressage , archery , shooting , golf etc. How the hell are they allowed to stay.

Boxing went from being in serious financial trouble, had an interim president who was on the CiA's naughty list for Heroin trafficking, installed a new Russian President, secured sponsorship from majority Russian state owned Gazprom, miraculously cleared millions of dollars worth of debt, wrote off the annual fees for national federations and stumped up $2,6 million USD prize money for the men's world championships.

Whilst IBA (formerly AIBA) under Kremlev appear to be making a number of changes, I think for the IOC it's as simple as 'where's the money coming from'?

I disagree with you in part. Olympic sport is (or at least was) about combat readiness i.e. being prepared for war. Thus shooting sports with guns and arrows, and equestrianism are fine by me and should stay in.

For example. a sport I'd have added decades ago is orienteering, That is the epitome of an Olympic event for me.

More like 'why isn't enough of that money being funnelled to us'.

The IOC are in the pocket of American corporations and hate that the Eastern Europeans and Central Asians have the strength and fighting sports in their control. The reason is simple. On average Americans and Western Europeans are softer populations.

Too be honest could'nt care less , ameteur boxing started going down the tube 20 plus years ago on an international level , when they allowed politics to change the scoring method to suit the Cubans ,, Remember when the judges forgot what a scoring punch was .
For those that are too young ,let me enlighten you , a scoring punch is a effective punch landed with the knuckle part of the glove , on the target area and with the weight of the shoulder behind it ,,,,,,,, NOTE WEIGHT OF THE SHOULDER BEHIND IT ,,, now then along came the cubans with there 6' bantamweights , who run and run and run , and were awarded points for landing a jab whilst running backwards virtually , they even changed the scoring system to suit them ,,, that was the beginning of the end of ameteur boxing at international level ,,,, will say that its starting to get better , but its not back where it should be

If you told me a sport that is the definition of the Olympics it's the modern pentathlon. Although yes that coach smacking the horse was not a good look at all.

As someone who has had involvement in recreational equestrian events, I don't see it as an animal welfare issue (apart from that coach yes). These are pretty accomplished riders (although far from elite) and experienced horses, just not had time to form a partnership. You see this in every low level show- no one thinks it's a welfare issue.

Perhaps it's not a good look to have "Olympians " look so shit yes. It would be such a shame for that to go

I've been involved in amateur boxing for 50 years and have never heard that expression.

In fact the old 20 points scoring method saw 'marks awarded' for attack, direct clean hits with the knuckle part of the glove and defence, slipping, ducking, counter punching, with a tight bout being awarded to the boxer who does the most leading off or has a better style.

The Cubans have always featured highly at the Olympics. Their dominance is magnified by Stevenson, Savon and Rigondeaux who all picked up back to back Golds.

Computer scoring was introduced in 1992, which didn't stop Floyd Mayweather Jr defeating the Cuban, Aragon, in the quarter finals in 1996 but didn't help the US Team whenever they faced the Kazacs or Uzbecs. They rarely faced Cubans in the Games.

Computer scoring definetly was political brought in and helped the cubans ,, course they have always succeded in the ameteurs , but the cubans are not and NEVER were ameteur boxers Ok now you could argue it applys to everyone ,, but in them days Cubans who made the national team were like movie stars its all they done was box box and box ,being paid by the govt , developing the tall rangy run away style which they perfected , and were helped with the judging . .

It could be argued that other countrys took on the same systems , but like i said the changing back against the computer system is now probably making the ameteur system more enjoyable to watch like it used to be , but for quite a long time the cubans started it and the rest followed this hit and run style of ameteur boxing , knick a point run knick another run , not count body shots , i look at the Aussie boxers , poor mans version the last 25-30 years of the cubans and probably why they don't win the medals

Scoring is scoring an EFFECTIVE PUNCH , An effective punch being a punch landed with the knuckle part of the glove on the target area , with the weight of the shoulder behind it ,,, Not looking at rule books for years it probably is'nt even in them anymore but i can assure you it was ,, being a draw , being awarded to generally best attack leading off has you say ,, still a draw , best defense ,, still a draw suppose best haircut

Either way for a number of years for me it was spoiling ameteur boxing at international level not so much domestic , it is getting bsck to being better i'm glad to say ,, personaly i think the french and the irish had something to do with that and the scoring system has now got rid of the computer system which suited 6 foot bantamweights , jabbing and running

I thought it was, overall, the fairest Olympic boxing tournament I've ever seen. And I watched 90% of the mens bouts, and about 60% of the womans. No shockers as far as I saw.

Will agree ,, couple of discisions i raised my eyebrows at , but definetly not outright robberys , depends what your looking for in a bout i suppose ... Womens ,, Naaaw ,, Just don't like it and although theres a couple who can box OK , the depth just is'nt there to warrant good competetive bouts ,,,

Have they still kept on BMX (when was it the last time anyone had a BMX since the 1980's? ) and skateboarding?

I like some of the new inclusions though - handball is a good one, they have surfing there which for me isn't an Olympic sport nor it should be but seeing as it's going to be held in California then it makes sense that they're going to include it in the roster.

Boxing? It is about time they pulled it after all the corrupt bullshit they have been playing at these past - what? 30-50 years?
fornicate them, those arseholes who run it deserve it - it's badly corrupt at national level - think how bad it is at international level - it doesn't bear thinking about.

I am sorry to hear about the weightlifting going - always enjoyed watching the weightlifting in the Olympics - I wonder if the wrestlers will get the same introspection regards steroid use/abuse?

You've given no evidence as to why and how the Cubans, a tiny country, just one of 204 national federations would be favoured by introduction of a computerised system, nor who would vote for such a move?

Like I say, i've never heard the expression, 'weight of the shoulder' and have a 1958 ABA Rulebook and a number of other journals that i'm browsing through but have yet to find your 'weight of the shoulder' claim. :brick:

Wasn't the computer scoring brought in cos of the dodgy officiating using the standard scoring - e.g. Seoul Olympics.

It's a shame.

Football, tennis, golf, rugby should not be in the Olympics ffs.
It's like they don't want it now they've cleaned up (some? most of ?) the dirty money flowing in to it.

Here did'nt have to spend hrs scouring through books just to try prove myself right or wrong , just a google on ameteur boxing scoring , came up with a big article , which i copied a portion for you i've put an asterix next to point in mention ,, sometimes we just have to acknoledge we don't know everything

Like i said it was a 1 minuite google ,, will acknoledge its not a common known rule and its definetly not been took into account over the last few years , especielly when the computer scoring came in which encouraged boxers to land a jab whilst leaning back to escape a return which is a style the cubans perfected years ago to take advantage of the scoring system , which is why they were so in favor of the computer system

Amateur bouts . are judged on five metrics:

Number of quality blows landed on the target area
Domination of the bout
Competitiveness
Technique and tactics superiority
Non-infringement of rules

So punching is just ONE part of the picture, and furthermore, for a punch to be counted, it must:

Land in the legal target area (above the waist, front side of the body)
With the knuckle part of the closed boxing glove (no slaps)
With the weight of the shoulder or hip behind the punch **************
Land without being blocked or guarded by the defender

So none of the punches in the clip below actually count. FYI.

Many people who watch amateur boxing only consider punches thrown, and don’t judge the quality, accuracy, or effectiveness of the shots. **********The shot must be thrown, land — with weight behind it **********— in the right place with the right part of the glove, and not be opposed.

LOL, dragged from an article off of the internet with no reference to any sort of Rulebook, the only reference being a link to a US Boxing one that doesn't work. For the record this is the British & Irish forum

PS: How many amateur boxing books do you even have to scour through? :yay:
