It wouldn't be surprising, if Tate looked good for some time, but Lyle would get to him in the end and stop him.

Don't know. Prime vs Prime, I could see John keeping Ron at a distance for 10, 11 rounds, but eventually Ron will catch up with him and stop him, though not pulling a Weaver, but winning a close decision. But if Tate could keep his distance for around 13, 14 rounds, he could pull a close one. Depends on all of the factors involved.

Tate would have his moments in the early rounds by outboxing Lyle, who would turn the tide by wearing Tate down behind his jabs, right hands and body punches before knocking Tate out in the late rounds.
