Axel Schulz vs Shannon Briggs

Post by DrDuke »

It could have been a nice affair around '96.

Both at their best, 12 rounds. What do you think?

Schulz was a traditional German fighter, methodical and with 'German shell', lacking agility, boxing IQ and punching power, but pretty tough and durable, able to do his job straightforwardly and in a mauling fashion.

Briggs was a roughhousing big and strong guy, far from a sublime boxer. He hit harder than Schulz, but was less durable and more vulnerable.

Both fought Foreman and Botha. Schulz officially lost in both fights, while both of them were robberies. Briggs won Foreman and drawn against Botha, while both fights looked more like losses for Shannon.

I'd pick Schulz to outbox Briggs with a 117-111-ish score.

Schulz would have his moments out-boxing Briggs in the early rounds, but Briggs would rally into the fight by wearing him out with jabs and powerful punches after cutting the German off the ring before knocking him out in the late rounds or he would decision him.

Schulz seemed to be a fighter the judges struggled to like....so who knows what we'd get if it went to the cards.

He got darn lucky against Akinwande first time round but then became a victim of the Foreman roadshow/cash machine and Axel was always in there with Moorer too. I thought both of those performances were pretty impressive as it happens.

Hard one to call by I suspect Briggs might find a way over a fairly ugly 12 nip-and-tuck rounds.
