Flip flopping allegiances.
Anybody now root for a boxer they previously disliked? I was always a Joshua man until the past few years but now favour Fury were they to get it on.
Was a massive Nigel Benn fan through the nineties and yearned he cleaned Eubank out in both their fights, now inexplicably like Eubank more and glad he got the better of it.

I was a massive David Haye fan. Went to see him fight Mormeck, Klitschko and loads of fights in the U.K. too. I went off him when I met him. Most pro boxers I’ve met couldn’t be nicer but he came across arrogant so it put me off going to watch him when he had his comeback fights and the 2 Bellew scraps.clivelawrence wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 13:36 Anybody now root for a boxer they previously disliked? Bellew was the other way. I wouldn’t say I disliked him but I wanted Clev to win their first fight. The more time Tony spent at cruiser the more I liked him I watched him win the Clev rematch and then live at Goodison when he won the world title (I’m a fellow toffee).

Calzaghe. I just didn’t like him for some reason, maybe the hype but through time came to appreciate his greatness. More so now since he’s retired and I know the extent of the struggles he had. Tough man.
Clinton Woods. I just never rated him when he was fighting British guys but towards the end of his career he showed some great qualities as a fighter, his heart and toughness especially. He got ‘luck’ on his side against Glen Johnson IMO but he fought superbly and the fights were very close. Seems like a good guy. Hope he’s doing well now.
Canelo. I seen him as feasting on smaller guys and taking easier fights a few years ago. I had GGG beating him twice but he’s really shown some big improvements and he’s one of the only boxers I look forward to watching now.

Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
I disliked Carl Froch when i first saw him, and slowly came to respect him.
James Toney is a guy that I went from straight up hating to him being one of my all time favorites.
Those are the 2 most noteworthy flips in how I felt about a fighter.

I flipped on Froch also. He seemed to have no chance of being as good as he kept saying he was.

Lewis turned me into a fan who was cheering for him. Shame it only happened in his last fight.

Totally get you re Haye. For a very brief period came across as a blokes bloke and someone you'd be proud to follow. The more he was in the public eye the more he appeared a conceited knob.

Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
I got into pro boxing around 2000 when he was turning pro and watched every fight of his on TV (I didn’t have Sky at the time so him on BBC was one of the few fighters I could properly follow) or live in person. I met him by chance in a bar one afternoon in Birmingham. He might have been pissed off by the time I said hello because someone had said to him ‘You’re famous aren’t you…..you’re Lennox Lewis’ but the few questions I asked he gave extremely brief answers. I said that I went to see him fight Mormeck and he was nicer after that but overall he just came across as arrogant. Considering I paid to see him beat Ismail Abdoul, I was disappointed afterwards.clivelawrence wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 15:28I'm genuinely a Liverpool supportermaverick23 wrote: ↑17 Apr 2022, 14:00I was a massive David Haye fan. Me and Del Boy.
Sometimes he gives it everthing and I love him for it, win or lose.
And sometimes he just gives up, or doesn't try, and I hate him for it.
If the money is right, he will fight anyone and I respect him for it, in this age of prissy chicken sh*ts.
Of course I think he should retire now, but it has been a bumpy ride being a fan for the last 10 or so years. Bumpy and damn frustrating at times.

Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
I wouldn’t say I’ve flip flopped per se, but I used to really like AJ as he always came to fight aggressively and look for the ko at all times. The Ruiz loss ruined him completely, and the new ‘thinking man’ version of Joshua (i.e. too afraid to get in a firefight) is unfortunately pretty shit to watch.
Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
Hated Alexis Arguello as I was a huge Olivares and Chacon fan. Ended up loving to watch him and became a huge fan.

Never heard anyone say anything good about haye. Heard he makes people do press ups for him if they want a selfie. He’ll no doubt blow all his cash and be back again soon enough.
I really liked Joshua at the start. Now see him as a moron spouting out all his philosophical nonsense when he’s as thick as a plank. Total bull shit artist who’s swerved all the big fights and milked the public.

I met Haye again since that first time and I didn’t see any of the press up stuff to me, my mates or anyone else there. He just wasn’t particularly nice.high tower 1 wrote: ↑18 Apr 2022, 05:30 Never heard anyone say anything good about haye. Heard he makes people do press ups for him if they want a selfie. Jamie Moore was my other big favourite when I was a bit younger and he couldn’t have been any nicer when I’ve met him. His manager Steve Wood actually sent me a signed poster of Moore’s fight against Macklin which I’ve still got framed and hanging up at home.
I quite like Joshua and always have. I just think he’s a bit naïve and listens to some of the wrong people. I also think he genuinely tried to make the big fights (having 3 world title belts inside of 21 pro fights is good going).

If I remember rightly, you were pissed at the Dirrel decision, I think?

Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
Flip flopped alot between James Degale until I actually met him. Really good bloke where as I thought Groves was a bit of a b3ll end when I met him.
Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
Anthony Fowler.
Thought he was overrated as a fighter and a knob in general with all this anti vax shit.
Then met him and he was sound AF.

You definitely don't remember right. I absolutely HATE Andre Dirrell since always, and I thought he fought like a p*ssy against Froch and had no real complaint when he lost the decision.Lenny Cravats wrote: ↑18 Apr 2022, 05:50Glad you changed your mind, Gil.

Then he pulled his bitch move, acting like he went into a Coma from a Love tap against Arthur Abraham. Andre Dirrell is one of my most hated boxers of all time. I wouldn't even talk to that dude if I met him

Can't stand Dirrel either. FWIW, I thought he beat Froch on points, but it was such a horrendous performance I couldn't bring myself to care it all.

Yeah - I sat next to Fowler at Clev/Bellew 2 and he was really sound. I don’t follow him on social so can’t comment but in person he couldn’t have been nicer.
Re: Flip flopping allegiances.
My advice. Don’t start following him during a pandemic. He’s a cross between Chris Worry’s evil twin brother and Jade Goody (RIP).maverick23 wrote: ↑18 Apr 2022, 13:26Yeah - I sat next to Fowler at Clev/Bellew 2 and he was really sound. In real life; sound.
