Best “Matador” Performance?

Post by Delta Jay »

Seen the phrase used on Twitter before and had me thinking.

I’m defining it as fighter A, usually much smaller or lacking in fire power, maybe even chin, he does have better skills. Fighter B is usually larger and stronger, revered as a puncher or at least slugger. Fighter A puts on a clinic, using great movement and timing, beats fighter B, Outlanding him significantly on the way. But there’s always that danger element!

It’s open to interpretation like, but I’m sure you get what I mean. Send me down a YouTube rabbit hole

Pretty much the entire second half of Mayweather’s career would fit this description?

I never got the impression he was in danger, or could get knocked out. But I did used to enjoy them performances more than most.

Brilliant fight and definitely had that danger element, but I thought Amir hurt Chico more than once. I mean more of a back foot performance.

I think I’m being pedantic anyway, all good suggestions

He almost snapped him in half with that body shot in the first round. I've seen that fight a few times, and it amazes me how Maidana recovered. Watching it live, I was convinced it was an early night.
It was the first fight that came to mind as Khan was utilising his hand and foot speed, and getting out of the way of Maidana's far cruder, wider, more powerful punches.
Khan did a great job surviving the last few rounds (I think it was the 11th?) When Khan was all over the place.
Brilliant stuff.

I agree with every word, I’ll stop being funny about the description and add Bradley-Prov to that list as he was fighting hurt just as bad.

In both fights the winner used their offence as defence, which isn’t exactly what I meant but that’s all good :geek:

Ezzard Charles vs Joe Louis, 35lbs difference in weight. Great fight as well.

Domestically I also always felt Lynes gave such a clinic with the jab against Young Mutley back in the day.
Have to acknowledge Douglas against Tyson, though strictly speaking Douglas was too aggressive for it to be regarded purely as a matador performance.
Ali-Foreman to a degree as well given Foreman's rep at the time.
Feel I'm missing some obvious ones though!
Edit - also adding Usyk against AJ, though again slightly tempered by fact AJ tried to box with him.

Not sure if it’s exactly what the OP meant but Jamie Moore was a wrecking ball going into the Ryan Rhodes fight. I think he’d won several fights including a European title shot via big KOs. Rhodes didn’t exactly matador him but seemed to kind of relax and absorb what was coming at him. From memory he wasn’t avoiding shots but was parrying and blocking and taking the sting out of these enormous swings and just emptying the Moore balloon. Once Moore had tired Rhodes then goes to town and puts him down and stops him.

I get what you mean - we calling it a "matador performance" - using footwork and skill to control the bull? Not a bad metaphor I think.

Someone mentioned Floyd earlier but the last 20 fights or so of Pacquaio's career he was the much smaller man in against heavier opponents... To that end, I would mention Pacquaio vs Margarito. In that bout Pacquaio's speed, footwork and combination punching was just first rate, a true boxing masterclass for an All Time Great.

Also speaking of keeping brawlers at bay, Carl Froch vs Arthur Abraham. I know that Abraham had moved up in weight but he had a fearsome reputation as a pressure fighter and I think that Carl Froch showed his boxing skills staying on the back foot and keeping it long against him. Arthur spent the entire fight coming at him and trying to rush him.

Carl Frampton vs Alejandro Gonzalez was a fight where The Jackal had to use all of his boxing skill and cunning to get the W. After a disastrous start, the hard-punching Mexican floored him twice early in the fight and Carl had to rethink his gameplan in a serious way to come away with the victory.

Again, in more recent years is the AJ vs Andy Ruiz rematch worth a shout? AJ certainly controlled the fight and won pretty convincingly so that Ruiz couldn't get into his stride and let off his big shots...

Historically, Joe Louis vs Billy Conn (1941) definitely deserves a mention. Billy outboxing one of the greatest fighters of all time, until eventually being caught late in the fight. It wasn't a win for Billy, but it'd definitely a performance that will be remembered and go down in history.
