Confess your unpopular opinions about Boxing
Confess your unpopular opinions about Boxing
The thread title is self explanatory, but is intended to confess your (more controversial) opinions on boxing / boxers which you’ve possibly kept to yourself, until now…
I’ll start off with a couple of my own.
1. I want women’s boxing to go to 3 minute rounds so that a) more women get knocked out which might lead to be b) more exciting fights and / or c) less womens fights televised because viewers find women getting knocked out as unsavoury,
2. Mike Costello is completely overrated as a commentator. He’s not even the best commentator on DAZN.
3. Prince Naseem was a total let down who quit the first time he got shown his arse. He’s not fit to be fondly remembered, never should be in the Hall of Fame and should have received more stick for retiring.
Over to you.

Didn't Barry McGuigan retire before 30 to?
Partially because his father passed though eh?
Re: Confess your unpopular opinions about Boxing
Yeah, I think so but I think Barry was on the slide and never was one to boast. Nas talked the talk and still had reserves in the tank but couldn’t deal with being humbled by Barrera.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑15 Jun 2022, 08:49Didn't Barry McGuigan retire before 30 to?

a lot of examples here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=217237&hilit=
for me some are
-valuev-holy wasn't a robbery
-jack johnson massively overrated
-gavin edged bundu
-paul williams should've had at least 3 more losses
-i like the edster (probably many casuals do, but most hardcores dont)...just needs to not go so crazy on women's boxing
a few years back another one of mine was that conor benn's actually really good and can be world champ (still think so). seems more believe in him now. though im super frustrated with his matchmaking

i really like tournaments, both one night and over a few months. seems most people got burnt out of them after there were a bunch of prizefighters, but i enjoyed pretty much all of those

Wilder is criminally underrated and would still beat everyone else outside of Fury. He was only 30 seconds away from beating Fury 3rd time around.

Excellent thread …
Boxing has had a number of drug cheats who have never got caught during their boxing careers.
Scoring of fights will continue to be controversial.

dont know that those are so controversial! my guess is that most top end fighters have been on something.......these days there's a whole protocol to mask/avoid being caught
judging will continue to be sh!t no doubt

Most here would probably take something if their job pay is based on performance.

Re: Confess your unpopular opinions about Boxing
I don't think anybody should be boxing after they are thirty.
I don't think boxers should be paid.
I think there should be boxing in all schools.
I think the ABAs should be the domestic pinnacle and World Amateur Championships the global pinnacle.
I think the only televised boxing should be:-
Schools championships
NABCs
ABAs
European Amateur Championships
World Amateur Championships

It is in my humble opinion …
If David Haye actually got in the ring the first time he was meant to face Tyson Fury … Fury would have won inside 4 rounds

I pushed the boat out on that one and had some ringside seats for it. Gutted when it didn’t happen but I always thought Haye would win. Still do really as I think it was just before time Fury really stepped up.

Re: Confess your unpopular opinions about Boxing
I was part of Team Haye … the training camp was a nightmare start to finish culminating in David being cut by then amateur boxer Filip Hrgovic. That happened on the Friday night a week before the fight.maverick23 wrote: ↑15 Jun 2022, 13:48I pushed the boat out on that one and had some ringside seats for it. Re: Confess your unpopular opinions about Boxing
Well you’ll know how Haye was looking and training far better than I would. I just thought at the time that at some point Haye would land a right hand. Fury had just fought Cunningham and I thought he was made for Haye at the time and Haye would land and Fury wouldn’t get up. Who knew how good a chin Tyson had, how good his recovery was and how excellent a boxer he’d turn in to.Spud wrote: ↑15 Jun 2022, 13:57I was part of Team Haye … the training camp was a nightmare start to finish culminating in David being cut by then amateur boxer Filip Hrgovic. A motivated, hungry Naz would have beaten Barrera and Morales back in the day.
