Best Ref Performance

Post by Dioufy »

What’s your best ref performance you even seen regarding a UK fighter?

For me… was Jack Reiss in Fury/Wilder 1.
Could’ve easily waved it off - imagine where we’d be now.

Mickey Vann in Kat vs Earl stands out.

Honourable to every Ian John Lewis reffing performance.

So much shit reffing we deal with; tell me ya best!

Ol’ Tel did great in Clev-Kov.

Helped Clev back to his corner.

Standout has to be the reffing from the first Fury Wilder fight.
It is, of course, easier to see when the ref fvcks it up. ?
Recently the Khan Brook fight was well officiated. Kept out of it, decent stoppage.

I like and have always liked Howard Foster … obviously someone who dislikes him will mention Froch/Groves … rather than 1 individual fight I would rather look at his overall qualities as a ref and I highly respect him.

Another for me who stands out is Mark Lyson.

one of the craziest fights ive ever seen was hector carrasquilla vs a korean warrior dude, back in the 80s. fight was in front of very partisan panamanian crowd. korean gets dropped 4x in the second round, but each time he was up quick, clear headed and fighting back. the ref stayed super calm and let him continue, and very next round he KO's the other guy. great job not getting caught up by the hometown atmosphere, and sensing that the korean still had something

somewhat similar, the ref for angulo-kirkland i remember thinking was cool. fight was in mexico and i think many a hometown ref would've stepped in while kirkland was taking a battering in that first round. ref stayed super calm and let it continue, and by end of the round kirkland had put angulo down

i actually think fury-wilder 1 is overrated as far as reffing

to just immediately wave off that fight, with like 2 minutes left, would've been a sh!T call. it's basically wilder fans who think it should've been waved off. reiss just gave fury a chance to continue in a situation that obviously called for it. he did a good job but i don;t think it was an especially great performance

its been massively exaggerated how out of it fury was. it's become mythical, part of the fury legend, like he was dead or something. actually he was looking at the ref and clearly traced the count, and was fighting back hard just seconds later. his recovery has always been top notch and you need to give him a chance unless he is twitching or something

darren barker in writhing in agony from that geale bodyshot, getting up at like 9.5, was in a worse situation i think. incidentally that was a weirdly scored fight. first a judge scores it for geale when barker won close but clear, then one of the judges who scored it for barker by 1 point only had him winning by giving him round 12, where geale battered him from pillar to post in a round closer to 10-8 danny than 10-9 barker

ya that's a good point. many cases of good reffing will never come up in threads like this, because we don't notice the ref in the first place!

for these threads, it's always easier to name fights with some big dramatic event where the ref made a single good decision, rather than fights that wwerent so dramatic where a ref consistently did a good job throughout

Pacman Marquez could easily have been stopped in the first round after Marquez went down for the 3rd time. He went down against the ropes, hands over his face.
In a British ring, that gets stopped.... 100%
Think about what we would have missed out on.

Remember it well. The Korean bounced up like a rubber ball for the WBA super-bantamweight title but his style made for a short reign in the days of 15-rounders. After one gruelling defence, he was punished and stopped by Colombia's Ricardo Cardona in Korea. Cardona was a 10/1 underdog.

Ref in the Maidana/Khan fight….

Could’ve easily stepped in and stopped it when Khan is all the place. Legs, head, everything scrambled.

You can imagine a British ref stopping it in the first when Maidana went down from that body shot (Which was, arguably, the best single punch of Khan's career - it would have absolutely ended most people. What a tough bastard Maidana was).
It definitely would have seen Khan stopped late on.
Terrific fight that was. Edge of your seat stuff. Khan may not have had a chin, or a brain, but he had the bollocks of a moose in mating season.

I do remember the ref getting a bit of (unfair?) Criticism from a few people (Khan detractors, no doubt) for Amir turning his back.... My opinion was that he was so out of it, he could barely tell where he and Maidana were.

Good call.

Not sure about the best by all means, but Mickey Vann throwing back the towel in the Katsidis-Earl bout was epic.

For Earl to immediately hurt and drop Katsidis and have his legs all over the place!

For those of us who have had the misfortune to see Howard Foster be simply inept over the last 20 years, can you please illuminate us with examples of his eptitude?

I can cite at least 15 examples of him being out of tune with other judges/mainstream viewing of a fight. I actually don't think he's corrupt. I've met him a few times, he's just shit.

I am sorry, I completely disagree with you.

Like you I have followed the sport closely - Howard’s reputation as a referee is that highly regarded I believe he is in charge of the referee’s (not sure what the appointment is called). Not only is he a good ref, his reputation as a judge is something to be proud of.

I have been to many a show where Howard has reffed more than one fight and I highly respect him.

I also firmly believe if Howard was as bad as you say he is, he would have been sacked.

If you wish to get hysterical about things then so beit. I am positive your over the top response to my post is clearly clouding your normal high knowledge of the sport.

I await your response :TU:

Jay Nady in Barrera v Morales II.
Huge fight and he kept his distance and didn’t start taking points off Barrera.
