Post by Spud »

Who is your favourite trainer either past or present?

Mine are :

Brendan Ingle
Brian Hughes
Robert McCracken

Present

Joe Gallacher
Shane McGuigan
Ben Davison

Also what are your thoughts on trainer/fighter loyalty … are fighters too hasty in changing their trainers after a defeat?

Jimmy Tibbs
George Francis
Mark Tibbs
Peter Fury

Edit: that's in no particular order. I have picked men who I would have liked to be trained by and would have suited my character.

My favourites are…

Shane McGuigan (although it worries me the amount of hard sparring his guys do).
Mark Tibbs
Grant Smith
Peter Fury
Jamie Moore

I used to really rate Joe Gallagher but find him quite annoying now and I don’t think he got the best out of some of his fighters in big fights. I don’t particularly rate Davison although I think he’s done well with Leigh Wood. Least favourite is Tunde.

Easy one this , past
Brian hughes ,, mainly because i knew him personaly and new he was good

Brendon Ingles ,,,, well just look at the success

Mckracken , once again look at the success with the England squad , and Froch and i would'nt blame him for AJ's loss , thats on himself , become a buisnessman and forgot he's a boxer .

Jimmy Tibbs , just a good trainer ,,,,, don't know why i put Mckracken in the past he's still around

Present

Mark Tibbs ,, knows his job knows boxing

Shane Mcguigan ,,,, now this fella has me eating humble pie , because 18- 2 years months ago i was calling him a celebrity trainer along with Mr Brylcream , you know who i mean ,, but the young fella proved me wrong he knows his job and has got a very very bright future ahead .

Joe gallagher ,,, i actually disagree with the other poster i think Joe has managed to take some of his lads to well above where they would of got without him , he's consistant in takig them to a set level , but really after that perhaps its them not had the goods , done well with what he's had to work with ,

I'll give a mention to Conor Benns trainer ,, i don't like Benn at all , but i will concede he has come a long way in a short time , which is no doubt really helped by getting good training , , just a pity he's such a cocky shite

I'll add something else ,, most over rated .

Peter Fury ,,,, does a good job but failed to see his main boxer is not improving and not sent him elswhere , (hughy )

Ben Davidson , complete plonker who loves to convince the world how technicly good he is and forgets at the end of the day its a fight , over simplifying things over thinking things , and trying to be cute is why he did'nt have success with Fury like sugarhill did ,
Done the same with Taylor got him fighting totally wrong against Catt ,
been gifted top fighters to work with and took them backwards , yet still cocky has foook

Oh , i did forget but how could i have forgot , Tunde ,, well words fail me with this guy

Gallagher's fighters tend to take too much punishment.

Not great movers of the head.

There’s been a few fights with Gallagher’s fighters where I just don’t think his guys had the right plan. The main one that comes to mind is Quigg against Frampton. I think Liam Smith could have beat, or at least made the fight closer, against Jamie Munguia too.

Some great calls on here already. In terms of present day Tony Sims surely deserves a shout-out as well.
Historically I think you have to acknowledge and applaud the likes of Phil Martin, John Breen and Tony Borg.

Got a lot of time for Adam. He is very particular who he trains, he doesnt need to chase the money as he made enough from David Haye.

Bad result with Conlan.

Josh Kelly to me has failed to get impress.

George Groves was never the same fighter once he left Adam. I am convinced that if Booth was in the corner for the first Froch fight he would have won.

David Haye could have achieved more but injuries put paid to that. The relationship between Haye & Booth soured in the end. Petty things became bigger problems like Haye constantly turning up late for training.

Joe McNally coming into the scene nicely.

Used to like Joe G but completely gone off him.

Kinda like Nelson in a strange way.

But I do rate Tony Sims, Shane McGuigan and still Booth highly.

Mark and Jimmy Tibbs, too.

Totally agree with the Groves point. Had he remained with Booth, I think he would have got over the line and won the first Froch fight.

I hope Booth and Haye are on speaking terms again. None of my business obviously, but they really did make a formidable team and I think it would be a shame if there wasn't still some sort of relationship there.

Surprised McCormack has never tried training Taylor as a pro. Couldn’t do any worse than Boxercise.

Agree on Joe McNally as someone else said. Impressed me lately.

The best trainers are probably amateurs. They’re the ones who have to mould and teach novices into world class fighters.

Once a lot of these fighters turn pro they just need a motivator and a bit of polish. I can’t possibly believe that Ben Davison has ever taught a fighter to be better technically, but he’s been lucky and obviously builds a decent relationship with his fighters.

The only fighter I think he’s improved is Leigh Wood. I’d argue that he’s got some pretty average performances out of some of other fighters (Fury, Taylor, McGregor, BJS).
