Panya Pradabsri vs. Tsubasa Koura - August 30, 2022

AKA Petchmanee CP Freshmart vs. Tsubasa Koura

Petchmanee CP Freshmart to defend WBC 105-pound title against Tsubasa Koura

News has reached The Ring that Petchmanee CP Freshmart will defend his WBC strawweight title against Tsubasa Koura in Korat, Thailand on August 30.

Freshmart (39-1, 23 knockouts), who is rated No. 2 by The Ring at 105 punds, turned professional in 2014. He won several regional belts before claiming the WBC title by unseating long-reigning countryman Wanheng Menayothin in November 2020. The 31-year-old Thai has successfully defended his title by defeating Danai Ngiabphukhiaw (UD 12) and Menayothin (UD 12) in a rematch.

Koura, 27, (15-2, 10 KOs) also turned professional in 2014. The Japanese fighter was highly touted and once featured in The Ring’s popular New Faces column. The 27-year-old Koura won the OPBF title by halting Jaysever Abcede (KO 4); he edged past future WBO 105-pound titleholder Masataka Taniguchi (MD 12); stopped future strawweight world title challenger Norihito Tanaka (TKO 5) and outpointed Daiki Tomita (UD 12).

However, Koura lost his unbeaten record when Lito Dante came from behind to stop him in the 12th round in March 2019. The young contender took nearly a year off, but the Covid outbreak led to a further 21-month layoff and he was narrowly beaten by Yudai Shigeoka (MD 12) upon his return in November 2021.

Although Koura has been inactive, he should provide a challenge for Freshmart. However, history is against the challenger as no male Japanese fighter has ever won a world title fight in Thailand.

Panya Pradabsri, Norihito Tanaka Make Weight for WBC World Title Clash in Thailand

Defending world champion Panya Pradabsri of Thailand and Japanese challenger Norihito Tanaka successfully made weight ahead of their 12-rounder collision for the WBC strawweight world title unfolding tomorrow, Wednesday, August 31, at the SaveOne Night Market in Nakhon Ratchasima, Kingdom of Thailand, 260 Km northeast of Thailand's vibrant capital, Bangkok.

The champion Pradabsri stepped on the scale at the limit of the division, 47.62 kilos (105 pounds), while the challenger from The Land of the Rising Sun, currently rated at WBC # 14 Norihito Tanaka made 47.54 kg (104.8 lbs), both men looking superbly confident and strong for their crucial battle.

The rumble will be the 3rd world title defense for the skilled 31-year-old Pradabsri, who claimed the WBC strawweight crown in November of 2020 by scoring a unanimous decision over then unbeaten 54-0 champ Wanheng Menayothin, a.k.a. Chayaphol Moonsri; and months later decisioning him again in their rematch.

At the same time, the fight will be the 2nd world title chance for the friendly 37-year-old Tanaka, a pro boxer since 2005 who wants more than anything else to become a champion for Japan.

The WBC referee in charge is the experienced Malcom Bulner of Melbourne, Australia, a fighter in his youth, and a third man since 1970.

The panel of WBC judges include Dr. Thawuth Pluemsamran, an Associate Professor at Thailand National Sports University, as well as veteran judge Hisatosh Miyazaki of Wakayama, Japan.

Supervisor for the WBC is Colonel Thanapol Bhakdibhumi, an active officer of the Thai Royal Army, while Surapote Pongjivanich and Poptorn Roongsamai of WBC Asia play their part in logistics and supporting roles.

PETCHMANEE CP FRESHMART OUTPOINTS BRAVE NORIHITO TANAKA, RETAINS WBC 105-POUND TITLE

Petchmanee CP Freshmart (Panya Pradabrsi) defended his WBC strawweight title for the third time by scoring a hard-fought 12-round unanimous decision over the valiant Norihito Tanaka in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Wednesday.

Petchmanee, who is rated No. 1 by The Ring at 105 pounds, is unbeaten in five years and claimed the title when he defeated long-reigning titleholder Wanheng Menayothin (UD 12) in November 2020. He has since turned back the challenges of Danai Ngiabphukhiaw (UD 12) and Menayothin (UD 12).

Against this challenger, the defending champion looked to dictate the pace behind his jab. Tanaka, a former 105-pound Japanese national champion, was the aggressor and forced the fight throughout. By the third round, without much choice, Petchmanee elected to trade and both fighters enjoyed success in a fast-paced fight.

After four rounds the WBC’s open scoring revealed that Petchmanee was ahead 39-37 on all three cards.

The middle rounds were evenly contested with both men releasing strong combination attacks. In Round 7, Petchmanee thrilled his fans with a sustained barrage which was greeted by loud cheers. However, it didn’t impress the diminutive Tanaka, who was quickly back on the front foot.

At the conclusion of eight rounds, Petchmanee had furthered his lead: 79-73, 78-74, 77-75.

Petchmanee’s greater accuracy and class was decisive. At the end of the 10th round, he backed Tanaka up with a right hand and followed with a combination that had the Japanese fighter covering up on the ropes.

To his immense credit, Tanaka fought hard and made his opponent work for victory in the championship rounds.

No Japanese fighter has ever won a world title fight in Thailand. The trend continues.

Petchmanee raises his record to 39-1 (23 KOs), while Tanaka drops to 20-9 (10 KOs).

Interesting stat that no Japanese fighter has won a world title fight in Thailand. I assume that's partly because Japanese champions don't defend very often if ever in Thailand. But considering there have been a lot of top Japanese and Thai boxers for 60-70 years, it still seems like at least one Japanese challenger would have beaten a Thai champ in Thailand.

Good fight highly competitive, I had Pradabsri winning 116-112 but Tanaka was in every round, a lot of action up close both guys banging away to the body , trying to get their head shots in, Pradabsri just had that bit more about him with the straight shots and the movement, Tanaka for all his success was one dimensional and just steamed in , Pradabsri deserved the win but still really close

Makes sense, there's got to be more money there than in Thailand for their beltholders. Also the climate has to be tough. I went to a couple of shows when I was in Bangkok about a decade ago in April and I thought it would be a difficult place to fight if you weren't used to the heat and humidity
