Coetzee was better. The fight would be close and tactical for some time, as both were methodical boxers, but Coetzee had that right hand and he could use it properly. In the 6th or so Gerrie would ice Jimmy.

Ellis would have his moments early by out-boxing Coetzee behind his jabs, right hands and combinations, but Coetzee would came back outhustling Ellis off the ropes with jabs and body punches before knocking him out with his bionic right hand in 12 rounds.

Ellis should have been able to outbox Coetzee and win a decision. Outside of the Coetzee's right hand, Ellis was better at almost every phase. Coetzee's big right hand was also missing in action in a lot of fights.
