Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Erislandy Lara - WBA Ordered

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Erislandy Lara Ordered By The WBA

The World Boxing Association has approved Gennadiy Golovkin's request for a special permit to move up in weight for the upcoming trilogy fight with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, which is scheduled to take place on September 17th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Earlier this year, Golovkin traveled to Japan and stopped Ryota Murata to unify the WBA, IBF, IBO middleweight titles.

The WBA's "regular" champion at 160-pounds is Erislandy Lara.

Should Golovkin defeat Canelo, he will only have five days - until September 23 - to advise the WBA as to which world title he intends to keep.

If he decides to return back to middleweight, he will have 120 days to defend his title against Lara to establish a single WBA champion at 160-pounds.

And if Golovkin loses to Canelo, he will also have 120 days to defend his title against Lara to establish a single WBA champion at 160-pounds.

The WBA has made it clear that their organization will not grant any further special permits for Golovkin.

Should Golovkin drop the WBA belt, then Lara would automatically get elevated to the status of 'super' champion at middleweight.

IF GGG beats Canelo, then he can stay at 168 (he'll be undisputed regardless), or can choose to drop back down to 160 and defend his 160 belts against Lara.

After this big payday, G can retire happy and financially secured. He's already a multimillionaire. Having a third fight vs the cash-cow of boxing is a great prize. :TU:

Golovkin has perfect style to deliver a savage beating to Lara.

Was 6 fight deal worth $100m
But I know the money was renegotiated.

Unsure about the fights.

He’s had Rolls, Derev, Szeremeta, Murata, Canelo (pending)

Ok , lets say G has 1 more fight after Canelo. G would probably take a better sellable name like Mung or Eubank Jr .

If I remember right, GGG wasn't interested in fighting Lara 6-7 yrs ago. I don't think it's a style he likes, plus Lara is a southpaw. Same deal with GGG not interested in an Andrade fight. Lara is almost 40 himself, maybe he's slowed down.

Decent matchup, since both are ageing. They don't have enough for the young top guys, but against each other it's gonna be intriguing. Stylistically it has always been an interesting matchup.

“The Committee decided to approve the request for permission and if Golovkin wins the fight against “Canelo” he will have five days (until September 23) to inform which title he wishes to keep and defend,” noted the sanctioning body at the time of granting an exemption request filed by Golovkin. “If it is the middleweight title, he will have 120 days to face Erislandy Lara in a mandatory fight. If he loses, he will have the same deadline to defend his middleweight title against the Cuban in his next fight.”

I read that G still wants to milk the game even at 40 y/o, so at this stage I expect GGG to pick only the offers with big money.

Atm, I think G would stop Lara but money wise I think G is more interested to fight Eubank Jr, Charlo and Munguia.

“Well, it will all depend on offers that I might receive,” Golovkin said through his translator during his post-fight press conference late Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. “At the same time, I have three belts at 160, like I just said, so I have certain obligations in connection with that.”

“Indeed, I still have this fire burning within me,” Golovkin said. “I have [more] passion for boxing. And don’t forget that I have three belts [at] 160. I feel good, like I said. I did not allow any serious shots [against Alvarez]. And I’m not tired. I’m fresh. I feel the strength. I feel the power within me. … If the right opportunity comes, I’ll be looking to continue to return [to] the ring.”

IBF and WBA have agreed..

Golovkin vs. Falcao (IBF) will happen next, then the winner has to fight Lara (WBA)..

GGG has never wanted to fight slick southpaws like Lara or Andrade, and won't start now.

As both declining but still great 40 years old boxers, this is a great one, especially if Lara gets hit.

GGG inherited a mandatory he did not and does not want. He got a loophole when the IBF ordered its mandatory but it turns out GGG wasn't keen on this Falcao guy either.
Now the WBA has ordered old-man GGG and old-man Lara to fight each other.

My prediction: with no more loopholes to use GGG vacates and the WBA gets to one title holder at 160 without a fight.

They will both eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They both should have wins over Canelo. It could be their last fight in their careers.

They don't, but they should. After Lara vs. Canelo, all three judges were suspended from the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. Also, Lara's three losses were controversial.

Not sure losing controversial decisions (and draws - I thought he lost to Castano) and beating overmatched club fighters for alphabet belts gets you in the HOF, but who knows. Beating an ancient GGG probably helps his resume
