Mairis Briedis vs. Justis Huni - October 29, 2022?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Breidis-Huni on Oct 29?

It has been reported that three-time world champion Mairis Briedis (28-2, 20 KOs) has “verbally agreed” to fight Justis Huni (6-0, 4 KOs) at heavyweight on Saturday, October 29, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Breidis lost the IBF cruiserweight championship to Jai Opetaia in July. Huni is a former 2019 bronze medalist in the world amateur championships and currently holds the Australian heavyweight title.

Did anyone see this coming? Great fight. Briedis should probably be the favourite based on experience but by no means does that mean that he will look the better man after round 1.

What's Briedis doing Down Under?

Has he relocated?

Surprised there's no rematch, also a very quick turnaround.

It’s good to see an up and coming fighter willing to test himself early on.

Verbally smerbally. This guy Huni is far from being anything special, nobody would invest the type of money needed to get Briedis into the ring with him into this bout and there is no way that Briedis would do this for free.

This is all about some promoter using Briedis's name for free to get his fighters name out there. This fight will never happen.

Im a big huni fan but i think this is too big a step up. I would have Briedis even at his age as a top 10 heavyweight.

I also question what he gains? ultimently Huni needs to pad out his record a bit, much easier getting a title shot 20-0 than
9-0.... and he is still clearly learning. ID have huni fighting regularly vs Brown, Mckean, Kris Terzievski, Ahio. Then go overseas to a kownaki, or a charles martin type.. then start sniffing around proper world levle.

Maximum credit (as peter fury would say) if he does it, I just struggle to see this as a great carrer move.

If this is really happening it makes no sense. Huni is young with limited experience.
No reason to throw him in the deep end this quickly.
If this happens and he wins I'll be impressed. But I can not see it yet

Briedis showed some decline in his recent bout. Maybe it's time for a couple of cashout bouts like that before retirement.

Some decline yes. But it was more a pathetically slow start. Whenever someone dominates the back half of a fight it’s hard to say they are done, more just they got it wrong….

It's always tough to determine, when it's time to retire on good terms, before you get completely shot and battered.

Huni to face Luetele on Nov 4

Unbeaten Australian heavyweight champion Justis Huni (6-0, 4 KOs) has based himself in the USA under trainer Justin Fortune ahead of his November 4 bout with New Zealand heavyweight Kiki Luetele (8-1-2, 7 KOs) at the Nissan Arena in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Huni will train out of the Fortune Gym in Los Angeles for a month, and also plans to have Fortune in his corner for the showdown with Luetele

“I’ve always idolized Mike Tyson and his style,” Huni told Fox Sports. “Especially that viciousness when he gets into that ring. So my old man and I, we’re now working on getting that style down pat for me. Just the explosiveness. That, and working on the inside with short, sharp punches. Bringing a lot of power.

Fortune, who stands 5’9, competed at heavyweight in the 1990s and fought the likes of Lennox Lewis among others. He was known for his aggressive style, which Huni hopes to incorporate into his arsenal.

“In previous fights, I’ve boxed, stayed long, stayed on the outside. Fought on the inside a little bit here and there, but now I’m looking at how to really fight in close and bring as much power as I can while in there. I think that’s what will catch these bigger guys off guard. My speed and explosiveness are going to surprise a lot of heavyweights.

“Guys like Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, I’m a shorter heavyweight compared to all of them. Which is what Mike Tyson was, too.

“I’m looking to develop more power into my punches. Also some little tricks. Bringing my ring IQ up with tricks Justin has learned throughout his own career by facing and training other world class fighters.”

This is a huge jump in competition for Huni. He is only 23, and has never faced a top 75 opponent. His next opponent shouldn't be Briedis, but someone in the #65 ballpark like Nathan Gorman, Mahmoud Charr, Carlos Negron, or David Allen. I'm inclined to believe that Briedis is a pretty comfortable favorite.

He is facing a more sensible opponent. Still decent for a young prospect, but not silly.

He's not fighting Briedis.

He's gonna fight New Zealand heavyweight Kiki Luetele (8-1-2, 7 KOs)

I knew it would not happen. Way too early and too big of a step up for Huni
