Jeison Rosario-Yoelvis Gomez To Be Part Of Showtime Tripleheader November 5

Yoelvis Gomez will take an intriguing step up in opposition in his seventh professional fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that the emerging Cuban southpaw has agreed to face former junior middleweight champion Jeison Rosario next. Their 12-round, 154-pound fight likely will take place November 5 as part of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader at a site to be determined.

The other two bouts that’ll make up Showtime’s telecast November 5 haven’t been finalized.

Gomez has shown power and talent in two years as a pro, but Rosario is a powerful puncher who has succeeded against better competition. Most notably, the Dominican Republic’s Rosario stopped heavily favored Julian Williams in the fifth round of their January 2020 fight in Philadelphia, Williams’ hometown, to capture the IBF, IBO and WBA 154-pound crowns.

The 24-year-old Gomez (6-0, 5 KOs), a Havana native who lives and trains in Las Vegas, won his first five pro bouts by knockout or technical knockout.

He went the distance in his most recent action, a 10-round, unanimous-decision victory over hard-hitting Mexican veteran Jorge Cota (30-6, 27 KOs) on May 21 at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Gomez won all 10 rounds on each scorecard against Cota (100-90, 100-90, 100-90) in a fight Showtime also aired.

None of Gomez’s first five fights as a pro went beyond the third round.

The 27-year-old Rosario (23-3-1, 17 KOs) has won three straight bouts by technical knockouts in Santo Domingo since southpaw Erickson Lubin (24-2, 17 KOs) knocked him out in the sixth round of their WBC elimination match in June 2021 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Rosario’s loss to Lubin, of Orlando, Florida, was his second in a row following his huge upset of Williams (27-3-1, 16 KOs, 1 NC), who was listed as at least a 30-1 favorite by most sportsbooks. In the bout before Lubin knocked him out, Houston’s Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) dropped Rosario three times on his way to an eighth-round knockout in their 154-pound title unification fight in September 2020 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

David Morrell-Aidos Yerbossynuly Lands On November 5 Showtime Card From The Armory

David Morrell will return to familiar grounds for his next assignment.

BS.com has confirmed that the unbeaten secondary WBA super middleweight titlist from Minneapolis by way of Santa Clara, Cuba will next face mandatory challenger Aidos Yerbossynuly. The bout will air on a yet-to-be-announced November 5 Showtime telecast from The Armory in Morrell’s adopted hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

As previously reported by Boxing Scene’s Keith Idec, the show will also include a crossroads bout between Morrell’s equally ambitious countryman Yoelvis Gomez (6-0, 5 KOs) and former unified junior middleweight titlist Jeison ‘Banana’ Rosario (23-3-1, 17 KOs). It is not yet known as this goes to publish whether a third live fight will be added to the telecast or if the show will include a replay of the Jake Paul-Anderson Silva Showtime Pay-Per-View main event which takes place one week prior in Glendale, Arizona.

Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs) will attempt the fourth defense of his version of the WBA title, all of which will have come at his hometown venue where he also made his pro debut. The 24-year-old Cuban southpaw made his Showtime debut in his most recent start, after having fought exclusively on Fox platforms. He is coming off a fourth-round knockout of Kalvin Henderson on a June 4 Showtime card from The Armory.

Yerbossynuly (16-0, 11 KOs) will fight in the U.S. for the first time since back-to-back prospect-level fights in 2017. The unbeaten contender from Almaty, Kazakhstan—who turns 31 nine days after fight night—advanced to the mandatory position for Morrell’s secondary title following a tenth-round knockout of Lennox Allen last September 12 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Morrell outpointed Allen in an August 2020 interim WBA title fight before receiving an upgrade to ‘World’ (Regular) title status in January 2021. The advancement came shortly after Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez outpointed then-unbeaten WBA ‘Super’ champ Callum Smith in their December 2020 title consolidation clash.

The WBA has yet to order an Alvarez-Morrell fight, instead assigning a mandatory challenger to Morrell.

Jeison Rosario: Time To Say Goodbye, I'm Not Fighting Anymore, Time To Retire

“I think it’s time to say goodbye,” Rosario said. “I’m not fighting anymore. I’m going to retire. I have accomplished a lot, and it was good, but my career stops here. The most important thing is that I’m still healthy. I feel bad that I couldn’t give the Dominican people the result they hoped for, but I love you all and I thank you for all the support through the years.”
