At their best, Patterson would have trouble with the southpaw Mildenberger who out-boxes him behind his right jabs and combinations in the early rounds, but in the middle round Patterson would find his way to neutralize Mildenberger's southpaw style by jabbing, working on the body and landing quick combinations. In the later rounds, Patterson would wear Mildenberger down with more body punches and nailing him with a big left hook to either win by decision or stop Mildenberger late.
