Post by BIGDOUG58 »

With the WBC Awarding Jeff Fenech the WBC Jnr. LIGHTWEIGHT BELT from his 1991 Robbery will BOXREC Change the Result to W UD 12 Instead of the Draw

the wbc cant change the win or a loss, they can only control the status of their own belt. for example, when francisco lorenzo beat humberto soto by dq, the wbc refused to give lorenzo the belt because they thought it was a bad decision to dq soto. but the official result still upheld with the nevada state athletic commission and is still a win for lorenzo

it's up to the comission which sanctioned the fight (nevada state athletic commission i think) to change the result, and i cant see that they have. we can already see from the example above that they dont just automatically follow the wbc's decisions

now, if the commission overturns the result too, then boxrec should follow suit

Good points. Of course, robberies are bad, but this move most likely was made because of Sulaiman's desire to gather more attention around his sh!tstrap, which value is getting less and less with time.

Just because he gets awarded the belt (which is fine) 30 years later doesn’t change the outcome of the fight.

Isn’t it down to the commission?

Did the WBC not order a rematch if it was so controversial.

Fenech won the fight no doubt, butwhere does it all end? Give Roy Jones a gold medal for the 88 olymoics robbery? Dave TIberi for beating Toney? etc etc we could be here forever

The WBC in it's infinite wisdom gave Fenech the WBC Jr. Lightweight championship from his draw in 1991. 27 minutes later the WBC noticed that Fenech had not defended said belt in 31 years and immediately stripped him of the title.

Was that the regular title or the Super Dooper Pooper Scooper version of the title?

p s I watched this fight in a pub with dozens of others. Despite all of us being biased everyone in the place fully expected Fenech to be announced as the winner because he clearly won the fight. When the decision was announced the place went beserk, but for all the wrong reasons

Fenech and Nelson fought a third bout(Very Delayed Trilogy Bout) when they were both 10+ years past it.
Fenech apparently aged better than Nelson.
Was Fenech awarded a belt for that Win..?
I'm going to look it up now. I'm guessing that they fought at 147 by that time.
Btw, That Hatton-Barrera exhibition was Really Something.. !!
A Blown up 140-147'er vs a Very Blown up 122-126'er.
The ref even had to step in and warn Barrera to not hit So Hard.

I just checked up their trilogy. The 3rd fight was 10 years after Nelson's retirement in 2008 and 12 years past Fenech's retirement. The fight took place at Jr. Middleweight

Thanks Acres !

I didn't have time earlier today to look it up.

I appreciate the heads up info !

Wow, that's Really something, isn't it..?

Nelson going from featherweight(126) all the way up to 154, for that brief comeback to enable the trilogy.
I remember Fenech being Taller..? Seemed like A naturally Bigger fellow than Nelson. Probably why he aged slightly better and acclimated more naturally to the bigger weight division.

Oh Wow. Nelson was 49 years old, while Fenech was only 44.
Didn't know this before.
Didn't know that Fenech started out at bantam(118).
That's really something, being that he's around 5'10..?
Anyway, 49 is usually a Big difference from 44.
I know it was for myself, being 52 now btw.

That “third bout of the trilogy” was supposed to be an exhibition bout with an agreement that it ended in a draw, Fenech trained his arse off for it behind closed doors, went all out on an older Nelson, the judges were in Fenech’s pocket and the rest is (false) history. Nelsonwas supposed to be paid his purse to his charity, he never received a cent, Fenech well and truly bent him over sadly.
That last bout along with Fenech’s relentless complaining and pressure to have the decision of the first bout overturned just show what a petty, insecure, small pudendum Fenech actually is. So many stories of Fenech… great fighter, very ordinary human.

It did have an exhibition vibe to it. At least initially.
But When Nelson cracked him on the cheek with that left hook though....
I Really didn't see it being an exhibition at that point.
Fenech made this funny little motion, after that Punch Landed Flush, like he was Re-Adjusting his Head and Jaw.
