Joe Frazier V Jerry Quarry #1
Joe Frazier V Jerry Quarry #1
Anyone remember their first fight. A late stoppage to Joe via a cut. 1969 Ring fight of the year which makes me feel it must have been pretty competitive. Was it close on points? Anyone have any stories about this one? Thanks

Why don't you watch it ? Easy to find. Great bout.

Well said.

Quarry won the first two, the third was close, but after that it was all Frazier. The first round was great and probably Jerry's finest moment.

It was a massacre after round 4. Smokin' Joe kicked Jerry Quarry's ass bad. I mean, bad!
I respect Quarry, though. He had a lot of heart, but he was fighting a monster in his prime like the great Joe Frazier. Nothing to be ashamed of losing to one of the greatest pound per pound all-time great fighter and a top ten all-time heavyweight great.

I think that may have been the first fight to start having 100 dollar ringside tickets.
Did anyone here see the live closed-circuit broadcast of Frazier vrs Quarry
,( shown in about 200 Big-Screen theaters across the USA)
Monday Evening April-23-1969 ?
( at ticket for that cost about 7.50 including tax)
what was the preliminary and who called the closed-circuit broadcast ?

This was the preliminary.
( George Foreman's pro debut) in front of a crowd of 16,570 people .

Round 1 of the first Frazier-Quarry fight was one of the greatest rounds in heavyweight history, to my way of thinking. Especially considering that there were no knockdowns.
"Two rhinos quarreling in the bush" as the Sports Illustrated coverage of the fight termed that first round.
Quarry won the first round, the second round could have been scored either way, and then Smoke took over.
Jerry took a terrific beating in the fight, just as he did 5 years later in the rematch.

Corbett-Sullivan(1892) had $100.00 ringside tickets; so did Louis-Conn(1946).
