Eimantas Stanionis-Vergil Ortiz Mandatory Title Fight Ordered By WBA

Eimantas Stanionis has spent the past several weeks targeting an unbeaten welterweight from the greater Dallas area for his next fight.

Such a fight could materialize, even if not against the fighter that the secondary titlist had in mind.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the WBA has ordered a mandatory title fight between Lithuania’s Stanionis (14-0, 9KOs; 1ND) and Vergil Ortiz Jr. (19-0, 19KOs), the undefeated knockout artist from Grand Prairie, Texas. The order comes two days after the November 16 deadline in place for Stanionis to have secured a voluntary defense of his WBA ‘Regular’ title.

The two sides will have 30 days to negotiate terms for a fight that is officially due to take place by January 16, 2023.

Stanionis is represented by promoter Richard Schaefer and his Probellum company, along with manager Shelly Finkel. Ortiz fights for Golden Boy Promotions and is managed by Rick Mirigian.

The order comes after both fighters pushed for the WBA to enforce their specific status. As previously reported by Boxing Scene, Ortiz petitioned the WBA to order a fight with Stanionis as the sanctioning body’s mandatory challenger. Meanwhile, Stanionis pushed for a title consolidation clash with WBA ‘Super’ champ Errol Spence Jr. (28-0, 22KOs), the unbeaten Desoto, Texas native who also holds the WBC and IBF titles. Stanionis spoke up on having the fight ordered once plans collapsed for a discussed undisputed championship between Spence and WBO welterweight titleholder Terence Crawford (38-0, 29KOs).

Stanionis was joined by unbeaten welterweight contender Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis (29-0, 27KOs), who sought to have his IBF mandatory status enforced for a similar fight.

It appears that neither will land a fight with Spence. There is a chance that Ennis could be approved to fight for an interim IBF title should Spence not immediately let go of the belt outright.

Meanwhile, a decision will need to be made whether Spence can keep his WBA ‘Super’ title or if Stanionis will be upgraded and recognized as the lone WBA welterweight title claimant.

Stanionis won the belt in a twelve-round decision over Radzhab Butaev on April 16 at AT&T Stadium, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas. The bout aired on Showtime preceding a Pay-Per-View telecast headlined by Spence’s tenth-round stoppage of Yordenis Ugas in their three-belt unification bout.

Spence-Ugas took place only because of Stanionis, who agreed to step aside in exchange for getting a shot at the winner. The 2016 Olympian for Lithuania once again stood down while Spence-Crawford talks were underway, as all parties agreed that the fight served the greater good for the sport.

That concession dried up the moment Spence was—and remains—left without an opponent. However, between the WBA order as well as Philadelphia’s Ennis likely to fight in January, it is very likely that Spence moves forward with his WBC-ordered mandatory title defense against former unified titlist Keith Thurman (30-1, 22KOs).

Ortiz advanced to the mandatory position for Stanionis’ version of the title following a ninth-round knockout of England’s Michael McKinson. Their August 13 clash of unbeaten welterweights was a sanctioned WBA title eliminator, specifically to next challenge Stanionis in a ruling that can only make sense to the WBA staff who long ago thought it wise to create multiple versions of its title.

WBA SCHEDULES PURSE BID FOR STANIONIS VS. ORTIZ

The WBA has scheduled a purse bid for its secondary title in the welterweight division. If no deal can be reached in the next week, a purse bid for the mandatory bout between regular champion Eimantis Stanionis (pictured) and challenger Vergil Ortiz Jr. will be held on Monday, December 12th at the Caribe Royale Hotel, in Orlando, as part of the WBA's convention. The minimum bid will be $200,000 with a 75% split for the champion and 25% to the mandatory challenger. The WBA has sent the official communication to both fighters’ teams. Stanionis, lisrted as 14-0 is more accurately 18-3 including the World Series of Boxing while Ortiz has 19 pro wins in as many fights, all by knockout.

The winner of this fight will become the WBA mandatory chalenger for the winner between WBA suoer campion Errol Spence Jr. and former two-belt champion Keith Thurman. Spence also holds the IBF and WBC welterweight championships.

First off all shout out to the WBA for ordering this fight, the organizations try to save boxing.
no one picking eimantas here. i dont think hes going to beat Vergil BUT give him a more than solid test. He has solid wins like Dulorme and Butaev. Ive watched some of his fights he isnt something that special, high guard solid jab solid power seems a bit like kavaliauskas but younger.
Solid Amateur background i wouldnt count him out.
Either Vergil takes this fight or he wait for a crawford fight but since rawford only fights once a year and usually in novmber/december hed have to wait a year and hope that an agreement between golden boy and BLK Prime is made.
If Crawford fight spence next year vergil would most likely have to wait until 2024 to get his shot at crawford, if crawford hasnt retired by then hed be 37 in nov 2024. to big of a risk to take for Ortiz to be inactive for 2 years, just to maybe maybe get a shot at crawford and crawford only holds to WBO belt, to consider anyone but spence who hold the IBF WBA SW and WBC belt, the best is a casual and needs to watch some boxing history before talking big.

Woohooo!! Good news..

Hopefully it goes ahead.

Clearly PBC were happy with the fight or they wouldn’t have bid.

Stanionis is entitled to 75 percent—$1,725,000—of the bid as the defending titleholder. The remaining 25 percent ($575,000) will go to Ortiz as the mandatory challenger.

WBA need to decide whether to make Spence the Super champion or strip him and have the winner of this as lone champion.

What do you mean? EJ is already the super duper champ.
But they should definitely make EJ fight the winner of this fight.
They need to stop this regular belt nonsense.

Be nice to see Boots get the winner of this. I've kind of lost faith in either Spence or Crawford fighting someone that can actually fight back.

Ortiz, Stanionis booked for March 18 battle in Texas

The 147-pound bout between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Eimantas Stanionis is slated to take place on March 18 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, sources told ESPN.

Oritz's promoter, Golden Boy, won the rights to the WBA "regular" welterweight title fight at last month's purse bid with a commitment of $2.3 million, and will stream the fight on DAZN. Now, Oscar De La Hoya's promotional outfit is placing the fight in Ortiz's home state, where he's headlined many times.

Golden Boy will also kick in additional money to make Ortiz, who is a far bigger star than Stanionis in the U.S., whole. The Lithuanian boxer won the secondary title with a split-decision victory over Radzhab Butaev in April and is entitled to 75% of the winning bid, while Ortiz will receive far more than the $575,000 he's set to make via the purse bid.

The bout shapes up as a coin-flip matchup between two pressure fighters in one of boxing's best weight classes.

Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) is rated No. 4 by ESPN at welterweight. The 24-year-old broke through last year with a pair of stoppage wins over Maurice Hooker and Egidijus Kavaliauskas. Ortiz was set to fight Michael McKinson in March, but the fight was postponed after Ortiz was hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis is a breakdown of muscle tissue that releases the damaging protein myoglobin into the blood, which can lead to kidney damage. Ortiz went on to score a ninth-round TKO of McKinson in August and will now step way up in class.

Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs) is ESPN's No. 6 boxer at 147 pounds. The 28-year-old also owns a win over Thomas Dulorme. He's promoted by Probellum but has competed under the PBC banner for most of his career.

Sources: Vergil Ortiz Jr.-Elmantas Stanionis bout set for April 29

Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Eimantas Stanionis will meet in a rescheduled welterweight bout on April 29 in Texas, sources told ESPN on Thursday.

The 147-pound matchup was set for March 18 but postponed after Stanionis underwent an emergency appendectomy in his native Lithuania earlier this month.

Oritz's promoter, Golden Boy, won the rights to the WBA "regular" welterweight title fight at last month's purse bid with a commitment of $2.3 million and will stream the fight on DAZN.

Golden Boy will kick in additional money to make Ortiz, who is a far bigger star than Stanionis in the U.S., whole. The Lithuanian boxer won the secondary title with a split-decision victory over Radzhab Butaev in April and is entitled to 75% of the winning bid, while Ortiz will earn much more than the $575,000 he's set to make via the purse bid.

Ortiz, who fights out of the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, was set to fight Michael McKinson in March, but it was postponed after Ortiz was hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis.

He also owns a win over Thomas Dulorme.

Press Release

Undefeated knockout sensation Vergil Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) of Grand Prairie, Texas has kicked opened the door to challenge for a world title as he is set to fight undefeated world champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs) of Kaunas, Lithuania for Stanionis’ WBA "regular" welterweight title.

“Vergil asked for this fight, so here we are,” said Stanionis. “I feel like this is going to be a special fight. We have mutual respect as competitors but make no mistake it's going to be an absolute war.”

The 12-round championship showdown is set to take place on Saturday, April 29 at College Park Center at The University of Texas at Arlington campus. The exclusive fight night will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.

“I am beyond happy, knowing that we’re finally here, fighting for a world title,” said Vergil Ortiz. “The work that we’ve done inside and outside of the ring and the obstacles we’ve overcome has led to this moment. Stanionis is a great fighter with massive power and I know we are going to put on a good show for everyone. I want to thank my promoter, Golden Boy, the WBA, and my manager, Rick Mirigian for getting this across the finish line.”

With a 100 percent knockout ratio, Ortiz sits near the top of the stacked welterweight division. His most recent fight in August of 2022 was an entertaining scramble in front of a hometown Texan crowd against Michael McKinson that added rounds to his boxing portfolio and a seventh-round KO. The 24-year-old has had an exciting career since his 2016 debut, knocking out contenders like Antonio “Relentless” Orozco, Brad “King” Solomon, and Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker. Ortiz is currently ranked No. 1 by the WBA and WBO, No.2 by the WBA, and No. 3 by the IBF. This will be the first time he will be fighting for a world championship.

Stanionis secured his title belt with a split-decision victory against Radzhab Butaev in a toe-to-toe match-up last April 2022. The 28-year-old former Lithuanian Olympian turned pro in 2017 after an impressive amateur career that amassed a number of accolades, including representing his country at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Since turning pro, the undefeated fighter quickly went from prospect to contender after beating the likes of Justin DeLoach, Janer Gonzalez, and Thomas Dulorme.

“There will be war inside the ring on April 29 as these two dangerous fighters clash to be at the top of the welterweight division,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. “Ortiz and Stanionis are elite level fighters who will be unafraid to unleash treacherous power and pressure to be crowned World Champion.”
