September of 1977. The night that Viruet fought Duran. And went 15 rounds. And looked like he only lost by a point or two.
Arguello lost a 10 round decision to Vilomar Fernandez in 1978, which earned the number one spot of upset of the year, in that year. I think that Arguello was very off that night. He decisioned Fernandez in they're rematch a few years later. 81 or 82..?
Viruet decisioned Fernandez. It was before Vilomar fought Duran and Arguello in the 70's.
It seems like a Very intriguing bout of styles to me.
I would say that it would've been a very 50-50 type of bout in 1977.
If I bet some money, I'd say Viruet takes it by decision.
Styles make fights and I think that Edwin would've had the Explosive thin man's number.
His footwork was actually quite astonishing. His punch resistance as well, at least at that time, was rock solid legit.
That changed in time for Edwin obviously.
It happens though.
Look at the discrepancy of punch resistance for a 1979-1980 Marcus Geraldo, compared to his chinnyness in the Hearns bout.

Edwin Viruet by Unanimous decision. The great Alexis Arguello loved guys that came to slug it out with him, not to run all night like Viruet did with the great Roberto Duran twice.

The Explosive Thin Man would find the way to out-box and out-punch Viruet with good long jabs and punches on the body and head after cutting off the ring to take a decision.
