Jessica McCaskill-Ivana Habazin: Purse Bid Won By Habazin's Team For Unified Welterweight Championship

Ivana Habazin pulled off the first upset well ahead of her next title challenge.

Charles Muniz, Habazin’s manager, secured control of his fighter’s WBC-ordered welterweight title fight versus lineal and unified champion Jessica McCaskill. A purse bid hearing held Tuesday by the WBC was won by Muniz’s privately owned Piranha 1 LLC company, who bid $201,000 to outpace Matchroom Boxing ($91,000) as the session’s only other participant.

Muniz and Habazin are both listed as directors of the company, which was founded just two years ago.

Per WBC rules, ten percent of the winning bid ($20,100) will be held in escrow as a win bonus. From the remaining amount, McCaskill is due $126,630—70 percent—of the bid as the defending champion. The remaining 30 percent ($54,270) will go to Habazin as the mandatory challenger.

A date and location are still to be determined for the fight, which will mark McCaskill’s fourth overall title defense. It will be the 38-year-young champion’s first bout since her ten-round defeat to unbeaten Chantelle Cameron in their undisputed junior welterweight championship last November 5 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The loss to Cameron was doubly damaging for McCaskill, who dropped down in weight in a bid to become a two-division, undisputed champion. Instead, her welterweight reign was broken up as she was stripped of the IBF title due to a by-law that does not protect reigning titlists who move down in weight to challenge for another belt.

A similar by-law carried by the WBO was presented to the sanctioning body’s Championship Committee, who determined in a December 14 ruling that her title reign would remain intact.

As a result, McCaskill (12-3, 5KOs) still holds the lineal, WBA, WBC and WBO crowns which she claimed in an August 2020 points win over long-reigning champ and pound-for-pound queen Cecilia Braekhus. McCaskill scored a repeat win in their March 2021 rematch, followed by stoppage victories over Kandi Wyatt in December 2021 and—in her most recent bout at welterweight—Alma Ibarra last June 25 in San Antonio, Texas.

Habazin (21-4, 7KOs)—a 33-year-old former champ from Croatia—once upon a time held the IBF welterweight title, doing so on her second try in a March 2014 points win over Sabrina Giuliani in Herstal. Belgium. The reign was short-lived, as Habazin dropped a ten-round decision to Braekhus in their September 2014 fully unification bout which saw Braekhus become the first women’s four-belt undisputed champion.

Habazin has won eight of her last ten bouts since then, with the lone two defeats coming at the championship level. She remains best known for her January 2020 defeat to Claressa ‘GWOAT’ Shields for the vacant WBC and WBO junior middleweight titles.

The two were due to meet in October 2019, only for the event to be canceled after the two camps engaged in a brawl preceding the pre-fight weigh-in. Artis J. Mack, Shields’ brother was arrested for his role in the melee, including his allegedly punching James Ali Bashir, Habazin’s trainer for the fight.

Bashir was hospitalized as a result of the blow, but recovered in time to train Habazin for the rescheduled bout. Mack was later charged with and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault and sentenced to one year in jail, less 158 days for time already served.

The 33-year-old Habazin has since rebounded with a ten-round victory over Diana Prazak last October 22 in Zabok, Croatia. The win came with the WBC Silver welterweight title at stake, the belt more symbolic of Habazin advancing to the mandatory challenger position.

McCaskill previously held the WBC and WBA junior welterweight titles, winning the belts in back-to-back victories over reigning titlists Erica Farias and Anahi Ester Sanchez. Both fights trailer her ten-round defeat to Katie Taylor in their December 2017 WBA lightweight title fight. All three fights were promoted by Matchroom, along with the entirety of McCaskill’s welterweight title reign and her defeat to Cameron.

McCaskill got lucky with her two wins over Brækhus.

She was a long time faded champion but she got the job done.

That last fight though, the loss to Cameron in Dubai at 147 was shocking!

Performance was off.

This fight won’t happen. McCaskill will drop the belt and take a bigger pay day fighting a bigger name.

She's undisputed by name, but she definitely lost two if not at least one belt when we challenged Cameron at the below weight.

Matchroom To Now Promote Title Fight, Piranha Promotions Surrenders Rights

Matchroom Boxing has seized control of a welterweight championship fight previously in the grasp of another company.

Boxing Scene has learned that Piranha Promotions has surrendered promotional rights for the Jessica McCaskill-Ivana Habazin WBC/WBA welterweight championship. The upstart outfit—privately owned by Charles Muniz, Habazin’s manager—previously bid $201,000 for the fight, which will now land in the hands of Matchroom Boxing as the next highest bidder during the February 7 hearing.

Matchroom’s bid of $91,000 is now the recognized purse to be split between McCaskill and Habazin. Per WBC rules, ten-percent ($9,100) will be held escrow as a win bonus. Of the remaining 90 percent, McCaskill is due $57,330—70 percent—of the bid as the defending champion. The remaining 30 percent ($24,570) will go to Habazin as the WBC mandatory challenger.

Piranha Promotions Once Again Wins Bid For Reordered WBC Mandatory Title Fight

The team surrounding Ivana Habazin secured the rights to her mandatory title challenge for the second time this year.

Charles Muniz, Habazin’s manager, once again won a purse bid hearing for the WBC-ordered title fight between Habazin and defending lineal, WBC and WBA champion Jessica McCaskill. Piranha 1 LLC company, Muniz’s privately owned company, submitted $82,500 as the lone bidder during Friday’s session conducted from WBC headquarters in Mexico City.

From that total, ten percent ($8,250) will be held in escrow as a win bonus. McCaskill is due 70 percent from the balance ($51,975) as the defending champion. Habazin is guaranteed the remaining 30 percent ($22,275) as per the standard for a WBC mandatory challenger.

A date and location was not specified as this goes to publication.

Piranha also won a bid for this same fight on February 7, when it submitted $201,000 to outpace Matchroom Boxing ($91,000) as the session’s only other participant.

The fight never materialized, however, even after Piranha defaulted on its bid and the fight wound up in possession of Matchroom.

Habazin instead moved up to face WBA junior middleweight titlist Terri Harper on short notice when Cecilia Braekhus fell ill and was unable to commit to their May 20 fight. Harper faced and soundly outpointed Habazin over ten rounds in a May 27 DAZN aired bout from Manchester.

McCaskill attempted to win back her WBO title from Sandy Ryan, but the two fought to a ten-round draw in their September 24 unification bout, which also aired on DAZN from Orlando, Florida.

There was a push for the sanctioning bodies to order a McCaskill-Ryan rematch straightaway. The idea was nixed by both the WBC and the WBO, who instead called for mandatory title defenses next.

The WBC split the baby, and agreed to allow the McCaskill-Habazin winner to next face Ryan or whoever has the WBO welterweight title by that point.

McCaskill has won titles at junior welterweight and welterweight, the latter where she claimed the undisputed championship in an August 2020 win over Braekhus. She repeated the feat in their March 2021 rematch and then made two more successful title defenses, both ending in stoppage victory. They preceded a failed bid to win the undisputed junior welterweight championship in a ten-round decision defeat to Chantelle Cameron last November 5 in Abu Dhabi.

The loss to Cameron was doubly damaging for McCaskill, who dropped back down in weight for the fight.

As a result, McCaskill (12-3-1, 5KOs) is now down to the lineal championship and WBA and WBC belts.

Habazin (21-5, 7KOs)—a 34-year-old former champ from Croatia—once upon a time held the IBF welterweight title, doing so on her second try in a March 2014 points win over Sabrina Giuliani in Herstal. Belgium. The reign was short-lived, as Habazin dropped a ten-round decision to Braekhus in their September 2014 fully unification bout which saw Braekhus become the first women’s four-belt undisputed champion.

A second purse bid was held on Friday for the Dina Thorslund-Seren Cetin bantamweight title fight.

International Entertainment Original APS, a Denmark-based group, won the rights to the fight with a $51,234 offer, from which ten-percent will be held as a win bonus. The bid surpassed TK Promotions, Thorslund’s promoter who submitted $33,333 as the lone other bidder.

Thorslund (20-0, 8KOs)—the unified WBC and WBO titlist—is due to earn $32,277.42 from 70 percent of the remaining total. Cetin (11-0, 7KOs) will receive $13,833.18—30 percent—as the mandatory challenger.

McCaskill-Habazin Unified Welterweight Championship Set, April 20 In Zagreb, Croatia

Ivana Habazin landed a home game in a bid to become a two-time titlist and create history in the process.

A location has been secured for Habazin’s challenge of Jessica McCaskill’s lineal, WBC and WBA welterweight championship class. The WBC-ordered mandatory title fight will take place April 20 at KC Drazen Petrovic, named after the late, great NBA star, in Zagreb, Croatia.

“It’s official! I will be fighting Jessica McCaskill on April 20 in Croatia for the unified female welterweight championship,” Habazin stated on Monday.” I am honored to be the first professional boxer male [or] female in history of Croatia to bring home this historical event. God is great”

Habazin’s promoter, Piranha Promotions, won the rights to the title fighter through a December 1 purse bid hearing. Piranha—headed by Charles Muniz, Habazin’s longtime manager—submitted $82,500 as the lone bidder.

McCaskill (12-3-1, 5 KOs) will now have to decide if it’s worth traveling that far to defend her championship for a modest five-figure payday. The two-division champ and former undisputed welterweight queen was already relieved of the IBF and WBO titles after she lost to Chantelle Cameron in their November 2022 clash for the fully unified junior welterweight championship.

Habazin (21-5, 7KOs) punched her way into contention after a ten-round win over Diana Prazak in their October 2022 title eliminator in Zabok, Croatia. She has since lost a ten-round, unanimous decision in a last-minute opportunity to challenge for Terri Harper’s WBA junior middleweight title. Habazin was permitted to retain her WBC welterweight ranking and returned to the weight for a six-roiund shutout of Timea Belik last September 29 in Hollywood, Florida.

McCaskill has won titles at junior welterweight and welterweight, the latter where she claimed the undisputed championship in an August 2020 win over then-unbeaten and undisputed welterweight queen Cecilia Braekhus. She repeated the feat in their March 2021 rematch and then made two more successful title defenses, both ending in stoppage victories.

They preceded a failed bid to win the undisputed junior welterweight championship in a ten-round decision defeat to Chantelle Cameron last November 5 in Abu Dhabi.

McCaskill attempted to reclaim her WBO belt, which was won by Sandy Ryan in a ten-round decision over Marie Pier Houle last April 22 in Cardiff, Wales. The two met on September 24 and fought to a ten-round, split decision draw though most felt Ryan deserved the nod in their DAZN-aired bout from Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.

An effort to schedule a McCaskill-Ryan rematch was trumped by the WBC, who insisted McCaskill had to next face Habazin in an overdue mandatory title defense. The sanctioning body noted that the winner would be immediately approved to next face Ryan (6-1-1, 2 KOs).

McCaskill-Habazin was put back into play months after Piranha defaulted on a prior purse bid hearing. The South Florida-based company won a bid for this same fight on February 7, when it submitted $201,000 to outpace Matchroom Boxing ($91,000) as the session’s only other participant. The fight never materialized, however, even after Piranha defaulted on its bid and the fight wound up in possession of Matchroom.
