Ken Norton v Tommy Morrison

Post by wrighty »

Over 12. Saw this hypothetical on YouTube and couldn't decide. Both have ways of winning. Both physical specimens and could punch a bit, especially with the left hook.

Ken had some wicked body punching and always came to the ring in great shape.

Morrison was sound technically, fast and explosive, with huge power. He had stamina and chin issues, but he had a lot of guts. He often was a fast starter and he should be a one against a superior boxer like Norton.

Norton was craftier. He also had chin issues, but his stamina was much better. Morrison's most important bouts ended with knockouts, win or lose, except a dec win over Foreman. Norton's most important fights were majorly 12 or 15 rounders.

Norton would be a much trickier opponent for Tommy than the Old George, since Norton was faster, better defensively and much more versatile. So, it would be a bad idea to try to outbox Kenny.

Tommy had real chances of upsetting Norton early in the fight, since Ken was a slow-starter sometimes. Yet in his prime Norton was stopped early only by the prime Foreman.

In the most likely scenario, Morrison causes some troubles for Norton in the opening rounds, but fails to land his best shots. Gradually Norton takes over and methodically outboxes Tommy. With Morrison being always dangrous, Kenny wouldn't take a risk of forcing the stoppage.

Norton by decision.

Norton. And I say this primarily because Ken Norton was consistent in his performances. He was always in shape. Even when losing he was still impressive, with the Foreman fight as the one exception where he didn't look impressive losing in his prime.

Then again, I would have loved seeing Norton against a world class swarmer. That never quite happened in his career. Morrison might very well have gave Norton fits, but I don't think Morrison ever quite had the conditioning to be a perpetual pressure fighter because after 4-5 rounds he was already starting to breathe heavy. So ultimately I think Norton would've stopped him.

Norton would wear the Duke down behind his jabs and body punches to knock him out in 8 rounds.

In a era of huge heavies, Norton and Morrison are what I think heavyweights should look like, supremely conditioned athletes that can bang and move. Would be a great bout

Sounds about right. Norton would take advantage of Morrison defense. He was simply too good.

Norton would take Tommy apart. Just watched Kenny vs Quarry. No doubt in my mind.

Tommy would have the puncher's chance, but I feel like if he doesn't bomb out Ken early, he'd probably get beat up and broken down as the fight goes on, and I think Ken beating him up is what would happen more often than not if these 2 fought.
