Maybe. But I know people often speak about Holmes also asking for it in a certain fight. Just can't remember which one...

In the Cooney fight right after the low blow Holmes does not go to a neutral corner. Instead he goes to his onw corner and is given water and attention from his seconds. Isn't that a bit odd too?

for Holmes, it was his thumbs you had to be on the watch for
( from what I remember)
maybe you're thinking of the "smelling salts"
that Chickie Ferrra asked for in the middle of the Cooney fight ?

Yes the smelling salts.

The blue bottle was Aaron Pryor in the first Arguello fight.

I thought the Pryor one was when they asked for the bottle they "mixed"?

and remember the small water bottle that Dick Sadler gave a swig to George Foreman with,
just before the bell rang for the first round for "The Rumble in the Jungle" (Zaire October 1974)

"This tastes like Medicine !
said George Foreman as he spat it out,

"Same water as usual"
replied Dick Sadler.

Foreman for a long times afterwards was convinced that, Sadler was in cahoots with Herbert Muhammad
for him to loose that fight.
Foreman's check to Dick Sadler after the fight is still bouncing.

shheeyatt, you are correct dude.
It was Ray Arcel doing the smelling salts and it was Freddie Brown who was flapping the towel in front of Holmes
to obstruct anyone from really seeing it.
Chickie Farrara was the one that had administered smelling salts to Muhammad Ali
when Ali came back groggy after Henry Cooper had floored him with a devestating left hook
just before the bell rang to end the fourth round in their first fight
( and Angelo Dundee and the other seconds obstructed any view by surrounding Ali with their behinds
whilst tearing a bigger hole in Ali's glove )
BTW was Chickie Ferrara in Holmes corner during the Cooney fight ?

There isn't a lot of info available on Chickie Farrara.
I remember he was in Ron Lyles's corner the night Lyle fought Ali for the Championship in 1976.
how often did Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown work with Larry Holmes ?
Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown must have been somewhere in their mid-80's for that fight in 1983.

If you run Chickie's name through the old newspapers you will find lots of articles; he was a very prominent trainer. He was working with Scott Frank at the time of his death. He also trained Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and Dick Tiger and said Tiger was was the better fighter.

Arcel was born in 1899 and Brown in 1907.

Foreman blamed everyone and everything after that fight and freely admitted it when he grew up a bit.

I don't buy that Sadler was in cahoots with Muhammad. Why would he? What would be his motive? For his own boxer to lose, so he could, what?

Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown worked Larry Holmes corner
for Holmes first fight with Earnie Shavers in 1978.
Shavers wrote in his autobiography that the 2
had 39 champions between them,
including Tony Zale, Ezzard Charles and Roberto Duran.
as
far as George (Chickie ) Ferrara,
I read that he went as far back as Rocky Marciano, Ezzard Charles and Floyd Patterson, Nino Benvenuti
( working in their corners)

BTW I had just read that Freddie Brown's career goes all the way back to Madame Bey's
where he trained Abe Simon and Bob Pastor during the 1930's..

yeah, I watched Ali vrs Lyle LIVE on Network TV,
and remember watching the old dude get really angry bordering on hysterical,
when Howw-ward Cossell was interviewing him.
It always stuck in one's mind because it seemed so funny.
BTW
Chickie Ferrara joined the Ron Lyle team in 1973,
when Lyle was training to fight Gregorio Peralta
( prior to that ,Chick Ferrara had been Peralta's trainer for 13 pro fights )

Never heard how anyone could possibly argue that it should not have been stopped. Lyle wasn't punching at all and was taking a lot of good shots.

Something else that is worth pointing out; the ropes kept Lyle from going down. Wasn't counted as a knockdown. Saw this many times before the Holyfield-Cooper fight and never saw it ruled as a knockdown until then.
