Student dies in white collar boxing match
Very sad, maybe they will look into the safety at events like this a bit more
“A young man has died after sustaining 'serious injuries' in a charity boxing match in Nottingham.
The unnamed student has been taking part in the Ultra White Collar Boxing charity event last Saturday, March 25, at Harvey Hadden Sports Village in Nottingham. A series of matches were taking place from 5.30pm to 10pm, but the event was stopped early after the student required emergency medical attention following the opening bouts of his fight. Paramedics at the event attended to the boxer before he was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre. He later died after his condition 'deteriorated'.“

RIP
I hope this wasn’t a total novice v someone with 20 kickboxing bouts having their first boxing match. I’ve seen some v dodgy white collar matchups before.

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
These events should have been shut down years ago.
6 weeks of hitting a bag and your thrown into a fight with hardly any medical checks. The matchmaking is generally dreadful as well - in terms of disparity in both weight and ability.
If you want to box, there are hundreds of amateur gyms up and down the country where you can do it properly.
Sadly, this all about glamour and buzz. Poor lad and his family :-(

The problem is a lot of white collar fights for watever reason entertains those attending. Where as some professional shows are like watching paint dry.
The news of this lads death is devastating news.
RIP young man

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
Not surprised by this at all.
I've seen a lad with mild downs syndrome "fighting" and a lad had epilpsy and had a fit in the ring as soon as he got punched.
The medical is a joke. Basically blood pressure and "look at my finger" while they move it from left to right.

Very sad news. I am not keen on white collar boxing, or the YouTube events, and have grave concerns about them.

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
I'm not against white collar as it was originally intended (so long as the preparation time is long enough, training is properly done and participants monitored and told not to fight if they're not up to it, and the contestants are properly matched). But it cannot carry on in this totally unregulated state. Too many mismatches, no drug testing, no way to check whether people have fought before and their level, and the only medical check I ever saw was a quick blood pressure check on the night!

Somehow the authorities need to stop all unregulated nonsense like this .

Very sad.
We did the training for Ultra when they first came to the area and told them we would never do it again after seeing what a shit show they run.
The pretence is that its a charity organisation raising money for Cancer Research UK but the reality is that its a very lucrative business that mis sells and is dangerous and after asking your family and friends to buy a ticket to watch h you you then also have to ask them to sponsor you as the ticket money has nothing to do with any charity.
How many people have been killed on Ultra events now? It's at least 4 I believe.
Fqing madness.

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
I went to a packed white collar show that had two rings with fights on simultaneously. Totally ruined the event but made them double the money.
My old amateur club ran white collar events and they were cowboys. 16 yos gettibg matched with guys who were 23 and big punchers. It’s all about the money , as long as people fighting they’re getting paid. I also doubt my old club gave f all to charity.

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
One guy in Birmingham who ran a very good white collar used to insist on an anaesthetist at his shows. He never had an issue in thousands of bouts.
At some shows, I’ve seen globe changes after refs instructions. No wraps. Experienced flattening No experience.
Regarding this UWCB org. My cousin fought on one a few years back. He was 6 3, his opp was about 10
Inches shorter it seemed.. They cram the bouts in. One out one in.

WCB is always trashy.
Run by grifters claiming it's for charity yet keeping the lions share
Attended to by Two Can Van Dammes in their badly fitting, rented Peaky Blinder suits with the town bike who is oranger than Donald Trump hanging off their arm.
Competed in by twatty kickboxers and bodybuildershoping to get matched against some novice so they look hard
And promoters arranging mismatched to guarantee a KO or beating to satisfy the Two Can Van Dammes.

If WCB is well matched then it’s a great night out. The good shows do a lot of things amateur Boxing could learn from like having more music and razzmatazz and making it a night out for the friends and family. Not every amateur show but maybe an annual one.

It’s completely different. There are tragedies in professional boxing, but generally after hard fought contests between two highly trained fighters who are aware of the risks - which are hopefully minimised through proper checks. It is their vocation.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 17:51Oh yeah because of course no boxers ever die in the pro game….stevec@france wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 11:14 Somehow the authorities need to stop all unregulated nonsense like this .

People are dying/becoming disabled in UCWB needlessly, after one or two rounds, sometimes just after one or two punches.
These are often students in pursuit of a bit of fun. Not athletes pursuing their ambition or a living. It’s a needless risk, particularly when everything that should be done isn’t.

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
Proper matchmaking is most everything. I'm reminded of here in Ohio trying to go into amateur MMA, but they refused on the basis of me having one professional boxing match. I would have to compete in professional MMA.
It's stupid.
Jesus Christ Almighty God bless the guys family.

Re: Student dies in white collar boxing match
So Bcos boxers die in the pro game that makes it ok for students to die in some lesser regulated environment ?JamesPhilips wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 17:51Oh yeah because of course no boxers ever die in the pro game….stevec@france wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 11:14 Somehow the authorities need to stop all unregulated nonsense like this .

people dying as a direct result of injuries sustained in these activities is tragic but we know that pro sports have tightened the regulations to minimise injury / deaths.
Can it ever be 100 % safe - course not .
But these so called white collar shows are by nature going to be higher risk .

Wow imagine trying to pretend white collar boxing in more dangerous than pro boxing lol :loldookus wrote: ↑03 Apr 2023, 05:25Frostieballs wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 19:13It’s completely different. Or more dangerous than Amateur boxing….
As for being ‘regulated’ what does that even mean?
Amateurs have a doctor shine a light in their eye, take their blood pressure, read some letters off a board and they get their card and are good to go for their amateur career…… lol and suddenly that makes the fights ‘regulated’ and safe?
You don’t even need paramedics or ambulances for an amateur show just a doctor….. at big white collar shows I’ve seen all 3.
The fighters are wearing head guards and 16ounce gloves, and box 3 x 2s….. the fights get stopped quickly and there are often standing counts….. but to you two they’re ‘dangerous’ and ‘unregulated’ because some doctor didn’t shine a light in their eye, take their blood pressure and ask them to read letters off a chart 5 years previously lol
Boxing at any level has a risk. But pro sparring is ‘unregulated’ and likely to be far more brutal and be ire rounds than some white collar contest.
What about Nick Blackwell? Remember him?
