Top Rank planning Josh Taylor-Teofimo Lopez junior welterweight fight, sources say

Top Rank is planning a Josh Taylor-Teofimo Lopez junior welterweight title fight this summer in the U.K., sources told ESPN, but no deal has been struck yet.

The 140-pound fight, if it's finalized, is expected to take place in May or June, sources said, and there do not appear to be any major obstacles to a deal.

Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) had been set to meet Jack Catterall in a rematch March 4, but the bout was postponed after Taylor tore a plantar fascia last month. The 32-year-old champion said he would be able to resume training in approximately six to eight weeks.

Taylor defended his undisputed championship against Catterall last February and emerged with a split-decision victory, but the judging was marred in controversy. Now, Catterall will probably have to wait for his chance to set the record straight.

Taylor and Lopez have been on a collision course for years as they've traded insults. Most recently, Lopez vowed to knock Taylor out before he scored a controversial split-decision win over Sandor Martin in December.

"I'd tear him up, from the body to the head, he's not going to know which one I'm going to hurt him with," Lopez, who fights out of Las Vegas, told Sky Sports in December. "A lot of people would like to see me take on Josh Taylor, and I've been calling him out.

"Especially to do it out there in the U.K., I really want to experience that. ... I actually will put him down better than what Catterall did. He won't come back up, that's all I can tell you."

Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs) captured the undisputed lightweight championship with a decision victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko in October 2020.

In ESPN's 2021 Upset of the Year, Lopez lost his titles to George Kambosos. Afterward, Lopez moved up to 140 pounds, where he has now competed twice. The 25-year-old Lopez is rated No. 10 at junior welterweight by ESPN.

Taylor, who is a star in Scotland, is ESPN's No. 2 junior welterweight. After the Catterall fight, he vacated three of his four titles to pursue the rematch (and avoid the mandatory obligations with various No. 1 contenders that would block the return bout).

But following various attempts to schedule the rematch, it appears Taylor is ready to move on, at least for now.

The matchup with Lopez is genuinely a marquee fight both across the pond and stateside. It's also one Taylor is ultra-confident he'll win.

"He is a very good, very skilled fighter, but I do believe that on my night I take him to bits," Taylor told Sky Sports in December. "He's a bit of a clown. He seems to look past his opponents all the time. It's twice he's made the same mistake and almost paid the price for it again.

"He thinks he's God's gift, and then he comes crashing back down to Earth with a bang. ... Let's not forget, he did very well to beat Lomachenko, but he beat a small, injured lightweight that really could make featherweight."

Taylor first must fully recover from yet another injury. The plantar fascia connects the heel bone to the toes to create the arch of the foot, and it's considered a highly painful injury.

Taylor and Lopez were both on ESPN's pound-for-pound list at the same time before Lopez's loss to Kambosos. Taylor, too, dropped off the list after the performance vs. Catterall.

Taylor's impressive resume includes wins over Jose Ramirez and Regis Prograis.

Catterall, meanwhile, is slated to return March 25 in Manchester, Boxxer announced, but no opponent has been finalized.

Fighting Teofimo Lopez creates a better opportunity for Josh Taylor, but can he beat him?

There has been a significant shift in the schedule and plans for once-undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor. After progress in negotiations and multiple announcements for a fight against Jack Catterall, Taylor will now fight the once-unified lightweight champion and top star in the sport, Teofimo Lopez. The bout, which will take place at New York's Madison Square Garden on June 10 (ESPN/ESPN+), will be for Taylor's junior welterweight title.

But was this the right choice for the duo? An opportunity to box at Madison Square Garden might have been influential in Taylor's decision, as this will be a high-profile bout between two former undisputed world champions.

ESPN looks at some of the key issues around the matchup between two fighters looking to regain and retain their positions among the world's top 10 pound-for-pound fighters.

Does this fight against Lopez provide more opportunity for Taylor?

Yes, beyond dispute. A fight against Lopez, the former unified lightweight world champion, is a bigger fight internationally than a rematch against Catterall, who before last year's fight with Taylor was relatively unknown.

Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs), 25, based in Las Vegas but born in Brooklyn, New York, is also a bigger challenge for Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs), 32, with more to be gained from it if he wins.

Catterall surprised a lot of people with his brilliant display against Taylor a year ago in his first world title fight, a controversial split decision loss. But Lopez is more widely known than Catterall and brings interest to the fight from beyond the UK. Taylor-Catterall II is an all-British matchup and does not have the same broad appeal.

Also, from Taylor's point of view, his rivalry with Catterall is not going away, it's something that he can pick up (if he wants to) later this year, win or lose against Lopez.

A rematch with Catterall is great (and let's hope we see it), but Taylor stands more to earn and more to gain from fighting Lopez next. The credibility he would earn if he wins, and the larger purse, proved too convincing an argument for Taylor to turn down. The gate revenue in New York will exceed that generated by a rematch against Catterall in Glasgow.

Also, the WBO conveniently made Lopez the mandatory challenger after Taylor-Catterall II was postponed because of Taylor's injury (a torn plantar fascia tendon) in February.

"If I went and fought Jack, I'd be fighting him with no titles and I want to keep the title," Taylor said. "It's out of my control and it's not my fault the WBO got in touch."

Lopez looked vulnerable at times in fights against George Kambosos Jr. and Sandor Martin -- another reason Taylor took the fight.

What is the significance of boxing at MSG and in New York for Taylor?

Huge, and it will be a driving inspiration for the Scottish boxer.

Scottish boxing legend Ken Buchanan, from Edinburgh like Taylor, was top of the bill at MSG five times in the 1970s, winning four and losing one. In December 1970, Muhammad Ali was on the same bill as Buchanan at MSG.

After making a successful lightweight title defense against Ismael Laguna in that venue in 1971, Buchanan lost his belt a year later to Roberto Duran, who threw a low blow in the 13th round, but the Scottish fighter had two more wins at MSG.

The chance to emulate his hero Buchanan will not have been lost on Taylor.

Press Release

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, April 12 at 12 p.m. ET and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com

Undefeated junior welterweight king Josh Taylor will defend his WBO and Ring Magazine titles against former lightweight kingpin Teofimo Lopez Saturday, June 10 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Taylor-Lopez will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets go on sale Wednesday, April 12 at 12 p.m. ET and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.

“This is a super fight on both sides of the pond, the junior welterweight king in Josh Taylor stepping up against the young, dynamic Teofimo Lopez,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “I cannot wait for these two supreme talents to step into the Madison Square Garden ring. It’s going to be a special night.”

Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs), “The Tartan Tornado,” is the former undisputed junior welterweight champion, having collected all four major titles in a remarkable four-fight run that included wins over Ivan Baranchyk, Regis Prograis and Jose Ramirez. He debuted in the paid ranks in 2015 and captured a Commonwealth title in his second year before defeating fellow unbeaten prospect Ohara Davies via seventh-round TKO. The 32-year-old then beat former world champions Miguel Vazquez and Viktor Postol before entering the World Boxing Super Series in 2018. Taylor stopped then-undefeated contender Ryan Martin via TKO before capturing his first world title with a decision victory over Baranchyk. His wins over Prograis and Ramirez left no doubt as to the world’s supreme 140-pound practitioner. Taylor returns more than one year after his last performance, a competitive split decision nod over Jack Catterall.

Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs) is the former unified and lineal lightweight champion of the world. In December 2019, he captured the IBF title with an explosive second-round knockout of Richard Commey. The following October, he bested pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko to win the WBA, WBO, and WBC Franchise titles. Thirteen months later, he lost the belts via shocking split decision to George Kambosos Jr. The 25-year-old then made his junior welterweight debut in August 2022 by stopping Pedro Campa in the seventh round. Last December, Lopez edged Spanish southpaw Sandor Martin by split decision. Before becoming world champion, he was the buzz of the boxing world with highlight-reel knockouts over Diego Magdaleno and Mason Menard. Lopez now has his sights set on another southpaw and hopes to become the sport’s latest two-division ruler.

'marred with controversy', "a competive split decision nod over caterall", 'controversial split decision loss"... wtf?

cut the bs and at least call it what everybody saw it was: corruption, blatantly obvious, a robbery.

catterall won that fight which every way u can objectively possibly score it, except you are blind or corrupt.

Is Taylor even able to make 140 anymore? The dude is easily a freaking SWW fighting at 140. I'd thought he would move up by now.

Leaning towards Lopez because I can't see Taylor making this weight safely much longer.

Lopez has looked shot or at least disinterested the past few fights and nothing like he did pre-Loma. iMO Taylor lost his last fight but got a gift. Not exactly a fight to get overly excited about. Still, Taylor should slap Lopez around. Had this fight taken place a year ago it would have gotten more hype

Lopez seemed to struggle with Sandor Martin on short notice and could have lost, sure Martin is a completley different stance and style of fighter than pedraza but Lopez should have been able to make it easier than he did.
By the way i dont think a trainer switch would help lopez much, he seems very attached to his father and his father acts like he himself is the boxer doing all the promotion shit talking trash etc. I dont think hed take a split with his son very well.
Taylor in my opinion just struggled with catteral because hes
1. a southpaw, as a southpaw i hate fighting other southpaws its just very awkward trying to get used to parring the jab with the left and powershots comming from a different angle.
2. hes pretty awkward
3. He had pressure on his shoulders to deliver in front of his homecountry

taylor turned 32 a month ago i belive, he doesnt have a lot of fights so the wear and tear on his body shouldnt be that bad, teo however is only 25 and has the youth and power advantage plus hes in New york so the Judges are most likely in his side, Taylor is much faster and is a southpaw.
Not sure who to take here but i think Taylor gets dropped but ultimatley wins a close decision.

Both guys have looked vulnerable in their past fights. Both can punch a bit, Both get hit plenty. Should be a pretty damn good fight that I slightly favor Taylor in.

who's the a side in this? what crooked shenanigans FOR WHICH FIGHTER can we expect?

pretty decent clash of styles. if taylor stays on his feet for 12, in the end a somewhat close SD Loss could be all there's to 'achieve' for the brit in the garden.

Teofimo Lopez says this will be his last fight on ESPN during wild rant

Teofimo Lopez has expressed real displeasure with those affiliated with the network.

Teofimo Lopez sure knows how to draw attention to himself, unfortunately it's not for all the best reasons as of late. During a new interview with Punsh Drunk Boxing, Lopez holds nothing back as he sounds off on ESPN analysts Andre Ward and Tim Bradley.

"At the fighters meeting I dissed Andre Ward and Timothy Bradley in front of ESPN's production for all the affiliation and corruption that they do," Lopez said. "And what happened? I put more weight on my back, and all they was talking about right away, when I slipped with the first knockdown they called.

"I slipped, they called it right away. What did Bradley say, 'He's hurt, he's hurt!' So I don't sugarcoat shit. All these motherfuckers dick ride and they suck dick - pardon my language. But that is the problem, I don't ride off that."

Lopez would then up the ante with his words, saying this will be his last fight on the ESPN network.

"This is my last fight on ESPN," Lopez continued. "I'm sorry but I'm not sorry. This is why this fight (against Josh Taylor) means everything to me. If they want the black fighters they can keep them. I brought Bud Lite to Top Rank."

Lopez's comments will be sure to draw some scrutiny, but it doesn't seem like he's doing himself any favors in the court of public opinion and perception.

Teofimo Lopez Sr explains son’s frustration with ESPN and Top Rank, assures public there’s no racist intent

Teofimo Sr. provides some additional context to his son’s recent public comments.

After Teofimo Lopez Jr joined a recent boxing podcast and unloaded on ESPN while making a curious statement about their black fighters, his father comes out to explain his son’s perspective and make it clear that what his son said was not meant as any sleight towards black fighters. Check out some excerpts of what he had to say below.

“When my son said Top Rank can stay with all their black fighters — because you know what it is, when Devin Haney came into Top Rank and all this, they’re promoting him more than they’re promoting my son and he feels a little type of way.

“You got to understand this, we’re fighting the top dude, bro. And we got to get some respect for that. And he just feels some type of way, like ‘oh, they just want to promote’ — in (Junior’s) mind — ‘the black fighters.’ You got Keyshawn Davis, you got Shakur Stevenson, you got ‘Baby.’

“So you got all these fighters from Top Rank that are getting more recognition than my son is getting and he’s trying to fight the top dogs. So that’s just something that he had inside...that he’s not being promoted, being appreciated about what he’s doing, bro.

“Like this fight with Josh Taylor, they’re putting him in the fornicating Hulu Theater, bro. Like, for real, bro?! I mean, this is the fight that’s going to put him in the Hall of Fame. This is a big fight and nobody is even mentioning it, bro. So that’s why he’s like that. He got a lot of shit in his fornicating chest.

“A lot of people is going to try to put this shit like he’s racist. Bro...my son-in-law is black, you understand? My daughter got married to a black dude, bro. I love black people. We all love black people, we was raised with black people, bro. I lived in the projects, bro. I don’t even got to explain myself because it’s stupid.

“The hate is so fornicating strong that they’re going to try to put that shit on him and I just want to emphasize to everybody that’s not what they think, it’s just what’s happening. And it just happens to be all the black fighters that are with Top Rank are the ones that they’re promoting.

“‘I’m over here trying to fight Josh Taylor, somebody that nobody wants to fight, so I’m taking all the risk. At least give me something, you know? At least give me some props.’ ‘No, you know what we’re going to do, Teofimo? We’re going to put you in the fornicating Hulu Theater.’ That’s like a smack in the face, bro.

“This is the biggest fight this year. I mean, this is for all the fornicating marbles, bro. This is the real fornicating fight and he’s doing it at only 25 years old. This is only his 20th fight...Even Max Kellerman said it on the Max Kellerman Show. And you know what? They brought that video down. That video’s private now because Max Kellerman said ‘you know what, you win this fight, you’re in the Hall of Fame.’

“(My son) understood that he was wrong with what he said. But it has nothing to do with race. It has nothing to do with that. You can’t mention the word ‘black’ nowadays because everybody gets offended. It’s a word that you cannot use. And I told him ‘you got to talk to the media, apologize and let them know that you didn’t have no (racist intent)’ — like he didn’t say it like in a racist way, bro.

“He just said it like ‘Top Rank is really just focusing on the black fighters because it’s the market. Marketing-fornicating-strategy. They see that’s what people want to see. They love black fighters. I mean, they the best at what they do. You know, black people are fornicating very athletic, bro. Nobody can beat them, and I understand that. But we get the chance to prove to the world that my son can be the best fighter in the world, and that’s all we want, bro. We want the chances, and when we get them, we go for it.”

Lopez is a hype job. Got Loma on a bad night and then was beaten up by a limited fighter in Kambosis and was gifted a decision against Martin to keep him relevant.
Taylor should win this one fairly easily on points

Press Release | Jamaine Ortiz To Return on Taylor-Lopez Card, Inks Co-Promotional With Top Rank

Lightweight contender Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz has signed a multi-fight co-promotional contract with Top Rank, who will work in conjunction with Jimmy Burchfield’s CES Boxing. Ortiz will return in a 10-round clash against an opponent to be named Saturday, June 10 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. His fight will top the ESPN+-streamed undercard of the junior welterweight showdown between WBO world champion Josh Taylor and former unified and lineal lightweight king Teofimo Lopez.

In the 10-round co-feature, Puerto Rican junior middleweight phenom Xander Zayas will take on Ronald “Diablo” Cruz.

Taylor-Lopez and Zayas-Cruz will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Ortiz (16-1-1, 8 KOs) is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts, who is of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. A seven-year veteran, he experienced his most significant year as a pro in 2022. Ortiz secured the NABF lightweight title in February after outpointing Nahir Albright, then followed up with a 10-round unanimous decision victory against former world champion Jamel "Semper Fi" Herring in May. In October, the 27-year-old used his size and strength to take an early lead against former lightweight champion Vasiliy “Loma” Lomachenko before losing the tightly contested battle via unanimous decision.

Ortiz said, “It feels great to join a stable that has created so many Hall of Fame champions. I’m looking forward to becoming their next one. It's been a long journey fighting my way up to get the respect I deserve. With Top Rank working with CES, I’m now hoping for bigger and better fights.

“It feels good to be back in New York to get some redemption after the loss to Lomachenko. I gained many new fans that night, and a lot of people thought I won. People know I’m the real deal now. I’m motivated to improve and take over the lightweight division. I only took 10 days off after that fight and went straight to the gym. I’m coming to make a statement on June 10 that I’m not to be played with.”

Lopez went off the deep end since the Loma fight. This would've been a huge fight before the Catterall fight for Taylor and the Kambosos fight for Lopez. It's still a great fight, but just not a PPV-quality one anymore.

I know Lopez lost the Kam fight and rightly so.

But he should never have been in that ring that night.

He could’ve died.
