Teofimo Lopez announces his retirement

Post by Redback Rasta »

Teofimo Lopez has confirmed his retirement from boxing on Monday, saying he’s not interested in fighting Devin Haney or trying to avenge his loss to George Kambosos Jr.

Lopez says he’s "got things he wants to work on outside of the sport and can’t do that if he’s always in the gym training."

But he did say, a “9 figure’ contract would have his attention.

I see no reason to take his fake retirement seriously.

I do trust the statement he made that he's not making enough money. But the fact is, even when you're in the high rungs of the p4p ladder, you don't necessarily make big money; e.g. Hopkins, Winky, Crawford, Spence. You build your drawing power gradually as you amass an increasingly larger number of title defenses, spend marketing dollars on each fight, conquer opponents who have drawing power of their own, and market yourself on social media. It's a slow process, and you're never going to get there by retiring early.

Strip him today. No need to wait, if you retire belt gone, ranking gone. And if you are “retired” so can’t go drug testing, then make it a year back in drug testing befor you can come back..

Canelo had 35+ fights before he earned the right to earn big money.
Teo might need to adjust his expectations, or as he is proposing, leave the sport.
Is it just a cry for attention?
Remember BJS saying he would only come back if the fans wanted it, and the silence was deafening?

It took Canelo about 35 fights before he fought for a genuine world title belt. Lopez fought for one in about his 15th fight and unified 3 titles in his very next fight. He should already be a wealthy man. Not as wealthy as Canelo of course but boxing wealthy.

. AT MOST IT'S A SUGAR RAY LEONARD KINDA 'RETIREMENT', WITH A 'COMEBACK' A YEAR LATER.

THE KID HAS PRIVATE SHIT TO TAKE CARE OF BUT ALSO MULTI MILLION DOLLAR OPPORTUNITIES INSIDE THE RING LINED UP HE CAN CHOOSE FROM.

BUT EVEN IF HE'S HAPPY WITH WHAT HE ACHIEVED AT HIS AGE AND INVESZED HIS MONEY GOOD AND WANTS TO LIVE THE GOOD LIFE,, MORE POWER TO HIM.

I'D LIKE TO SEE HIM AGAINST DAVIS. WON'T HAPPEN, I KNOW.

I think it's Teos way of saying "leave me the fornicate alone" while he gets his out of the ring issues settled. I don't believe for a second that we'll never see Teo in the ring again, would be a real shame if that was the case.

Seems like the stress of fighting, training, the politics of the game and possibly the relationship with his dad has led to him walking away. He'll no doubt be back at some stage. Probably just needs to spend some time being rich and lazy for a while.

- Teo won his first belt age 22. By age 22 Canelo already had 6 title defenses. Canelo fought TBE TUE Floyd his next fight age 23 that broke PPV records.

Age 25 Teo is 2-1 in title fights with only a single successful defense, so there is no equivalency between the two fighters.

I feel sorry for his exwife and child as he is clearly in a mental breakdown phase as an already over the top emotionally immature young man who has thus far lucked into a modest title career that has been breaking down even at his greatest moments of success.

You really feel sorry for that toxic, spoiled women he married? The child absolutely, the child has 2 parents with glaring personality flaws that will unfortunately probably carry on to the child.

In no way do I feel sorry for his ex wife. She'll be rewarded greatly for marrying a boxing Superstar and will live the lavish life the rest of her life, living off the success of Teo.

This is about him trying to work sh*t out with his wife I'm sure. By announcing his "retirement" he can go "See baby, all I care about is you"

I would suspect something like that is exactly what's behind all this.

maybe it's to limit his earnings on paper for the divorce he's going through? they take into account someone's future earnings, he could argue he's not going to make as much

no way he'll hang them up for good though

He’ll never see a 9 figure payday.
There is good money out there for him, but if he thinks a a $100m contract is out there, he’s pissing into the wind

You added Canelo to the Lopez retirement thread. They are chalk and cheese and I would never have offered him up as a comparison.

I simply responded to you saying it took Canelo 35 fights before he 'earned the right to big money' and pointing out that's when he first won a real title. Lopez has done enough in way less than 35 fights to have expected to have earned some pretty serious coin himself. Not Canelo career size money - nobody else earns that - but Lopez should have make some good money by now for what he has done.

He couldn't be naïve enough to think there is that sort of money out there for him for one fight. But perhaps he thinks the Saudis will get the heavyweights done in December and then work their way down the divisions? Even if they did, the smaller guys would not get anything like the same money.
