Foster-Hernandez: Matchroom Boxing ($466,666) Wins Purse Bid For WBC 130-Pound Title Fight

Matchroom Boxing has secured the promotional rights to the O’Shaquie Foster-Eduardo ‘Rocky’ Hernandez WBC junior lightweight title fight.

A winning submission of $466,666 was placed by Matchroom during a purse bid hearing held Tuesday as part of the WBC’s ‘Martes de Cafe’ weekly meetings at its Mexico City headquarters. Ten percent of the bid ($46,666.60) will be placed in escrow as a win bonus. The remaining 90 percent will be split 75-25 in favor of Foster as the defending titlist.

A date and location were not immediately assigned to the mandatory title fight.

The bout will mark the first title defense for Foster (20-2, 11 KOs), who won the vacant belt in a twelve-round decision over WBC featherweight titlist Rey Vargas. Foster—who hails from the greater Houston area—prevailed in his first career title fight by scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112 in the February 21 Showtime-headlined vacant title fight in San Antonio, Texas.

Both boxers entered the night aware that the winner would be on the hook to make two mandatory title defenses. Vargas unsuccessfully moved up in weight but was permitted to retain his WBC featherweight title. Foster extended his current ten-fight win streak, which came at a point when he was freed from his previous contract with now defunct Probellum.

Mexico City’s Hernandez (34-1, 31 KOs) was also with the same promotional company but had to go the legal route to avoid being stuck with its rebranded outfit now known as Disrupt Boxing. The veteran contender was vocal in his frustration over the manner in which his contract was merely handed over to the group who purchased Probellum, without his knowledge or consent.

The move was met with claims from Hernandez that Probellum denied favorable offers made by Matchroom, which has housed his last three starts. The 25-year-old knockout artist broke free and proceeded with his career, which has since included a third-round knockout of countryman Hector Garcia (not the WBA 130-pound titlist) on July 7 in Monterrey.

Overall, Hernandez has won six in a row since a July 2019 stunning first-round knockout loss to Roger Gutierrez, who went on to win the WBA title. All six wins have come by knockout and he has yet to see the seventh round of a fight.

Press Release

O’Shaquie Foster will defend his WBC World Super-Featherweight title against Eduardo ‘Rocky’ Hernandez at the Benito Juárez Sports Center in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday October 28, live worldwide on DAZN, in association with Pepe Gomez and Cancun Boxing.

Foster (20-2 11 KOs) landed the vacant belt in San Antonio, Texas in February, becoming the first fighter to defeat Mexican Rey Vargas on points to become World champion at the first attempt. The Houston native meets Mexican opposition again in his maiden defense on hostile ground, with the well-traveled champion fighting in a fourth country in his last seven fights.

Hernandez (34-1 31 KOs) lands his mandatory shot at Foster on home turf and the big punching challenger will relish having his first World title fight in Mexico. ‘Rocky’ has been on a ferocious run of KO wins, recording his sixth straight win inside six rounds with a third round bludgeoning of Hector Garcia in Monterrey in July.

“It's that time again!” said Foster. “King Shock is back in action. I'm excited for the opportunity to be back in the ring and defend my title.

“We're once again going into uncharted territory, so I'm eager to prove once again that I'm the best in the world and that I'm here to stay! Come October 28, I will dominate!”

“I've dreamed about this moment my whole life,” said Hernandez. “O’Shaquie is the best 130lbs champion. I beat him, and I show the world that I'm the best in the division.”

“This is going to be an explosive clash in Cancun,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “O’Shaquie will be full of confidence heading into his first defense after beating a great fighter like Vargas to win the title, but Rocky is a ferocious puncher that has been destroying everyone put in front of him and won’t take a backwards step in trying to achieve his dream. This is a fight not to miss and I expect yet another great Matchroom fight night in Mexico on October 28.”

The first undercard action announced on the card sees Australian Heavyweight Justis Huni make his long-awaited Matchroom debut against Andrew Tabiti. The pair were slated to meet in New Orleans in June, but an ankle injury in sparring for the Aussie amateur standout just weeks before the bout robbed forced the bout to be postponed.

Huni (7-0 4 KOs) will be champing at the bit to get back in the ring and kick-off his new dawn with Matchroom after penning a two-year deal with Hearn in February, and the 24 year old fights in the States for the first time in his career against former Cruiserweight World title challenger Tabiti (20-1 16 KOs) in his second fight at Heavyweight following a successful first bout against James Wilson in Jeddah. Saudi Arabia in August 2022.

huni may win this on output and physicality, but tabiti making him look pretty limited tbh. tabiti not really pushing it that much though

it's totally different from the smooth back foot boxer huni could be in the ams. he basically looks like a simple workman fighter here

huni does have solid variety in close, i'll give him that. he can put in the work inside without needing to clinch or create much distance

for this style to work at a high level for huni he's going to need a good chin and very good stamina. make up for limitations with sheer energy and persistence

tabiti lands a nice right hand that jars huni, but doesnt follow up. otherwise round went as the last few has, with huni busier and pushing tabi back.

9th round is a change as they hold the centre for most of it, and tabiti even backs huni up a bit. slow round mostly though.

fight over

huni with a workman like performance should win the decision. a mixed bag in terms of things he did well and things that are shortcomings. dort did a better job on tabby but with improvements huni is someone who could factor into contending.

tabiti with nice flashes here and there. has skills but doesnt work nearly hard enough.

round three - foster kinda over moving . not really throwing any shots of note of his own. hernandez improving at closing the distance. not really landing much but keeping his hands busier and looking like he's bullying shaq

in past fights foster has been very good integrating offesne and defense, but he's being too defensive here. also being frustrated by hernandez's mauling. good last few rounds for eddy
