Arguello KO 11.
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Jimmy Paul
Arguello would cut Paul down in roughly 11 rounds, in what is probably a very competitive fight. Paul was the taller, rangier, quicker, and more mobile fighter, but Arguello - an ATG or near ATG - would have placed his punches accurately and to devastating effect.
I remember Paul convincingly defeated Harry Arroyo and Robin Blake back in 1985. I was impressed with his long-range boxing ability. He could pack power in his shots too. Jimmy also had Manny Steward in his corner, which was a big plus.
But Alexis Arguello was simply a higher caliber fighter. Savvy, patient, cunning, always perfectly balanced, and possessing punching power that could ice any lightweight, Arguello was something else.

Arguello by KO 10 after wearing Paul down with jabs and body punches before finishing him off with a big right hand.
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Jimmy Paul
I remember those fights with Arroyo and Blake too. I think Jimmy's flaw was that he could be lured into a firefight when he could just box from the outside and win fights more easily. It made him fun to watch but it would likely mean getting KO'd by Arguello.Joson wrote: ↑18 Oct 2023, 18:21 Arguello would cut Paul down in roughly 11 rounds, in what is probably a very competitive fight. Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua was in another level. The great Explosive Thin Man by knockout in 6.
Jimmy Paul is the typical Detroit Kronk's Gym fighter. He stands straight up with his left hand low. Easy to hit from an Arguello right hand.

Being from Kronk, I think Jimmy could last the full 15. But Alexis would win a close UD.
