Re-watching Fury v McDermott 1

How do you score it?
8-2 was a travesty tbh.

In terms of registering punches - John
At range -Fury

6-4 either way acceptable for me.
I was in Brentwood that night. I thought John won at the time. Still do, but can see how Red scored β€œhis wayβ€πŸ˜‚

Still to this day think a John was very much like Danny Williams.
They nearly had the whole ticket. Just missing that one thing.

What John was missing was a good diet, better fitness and most of all PEDs

I was also there that night behind fury supporters who refused to sit down and the security were too scared to tell them to sit down haha. I enjoyed watching Mcdermott. Was a lovable loser, should have had a few decisions go his way. As James said can only go so far being Natural.

Yup McDermott one of the few fighters along with Calzaghe who were def natural. Anyone know what big John’s doing now?

interesting take as you were there live. In time people's memories of this (most of whom I suspect never watched it live or since) claim McDermott won by 56 rounds. I've watched it since and scored it by 2 to McDermott, but you're right it was not a landslide either way. It's here if anyone wants to watch and score

Anyone seen Fight 2 more recently - that seems to have been one of faded memories of a Fury masterclass - but from what I remember - Fury started off brilliant, McDermott was coming back into it - Fury was still ahead but it was closing rapidly until the clear KO.

Perhaps my memory was wrong, but fight 2 seems to have gone down the folklore of Fury now winning every second of every round (ala Klitchscko).

i watched both fights the other day. McDermott gets tired quickly in fight 2, as was Fury tbh. Fury definitely boxed smarter in fight 2 and to me anyway was using his jab and speed better. it was still fairly close though until the knockdowns

Jeez, when you see Fury's ring walk with a car forecourt quality banner behind him, it's boggling to think that he would go on to be sitting on thrones and milking every moment of the electric atmosphere.

Didn't realise it was over 14 years ago, that was just before the C5 nights when he was calling out Price and Bellew, another missed fight for Fury was Price and Bellew on the same night as he kept shouting for

i thought fury won the first two and the last two, and many of the other rounds were down to what style you liked. it was similar to the francis fight in that regard. It certainly wasn't the "robbery" everyone made it out to be. Basically a closely contested fight. I thought some of the comments on here the following morning were ridiculous. I didnt watch it live but youtubed it the next day thinking I'd see just one way traffic.

Interestingly, I remember everyone saying he was exposed, would never accomplish anything and would never take the rematch after that fight too.

Fury should have got more credit for taking john in his tenth fight i thought.

McDermott went to hospital after that fight. The Doctor told him he had glandular fever.

I don't think we can compare John mcdermot`s career with Danny Williams.

fair point, John was an underrated fighter so to take him in your 10th was no mean feat.

Having had a glandular fever, bloody fair play for fighting with it. I couldn't get out of bed when I had it.

definitely, was always a likeable chap. Reminds me of Gorman, both travellers, similar build, very gentle types outside the ring, seemed to lack that oomph you'd expect of a pro HW.
