Adam Azim youngest European champ in history?

If Adam Azim wins his fight on saturday, he will become the fastest british boxer to win the EBU title (only 10 fights compared to Prince Naseem 12, Lennox Lewis, Tyson Fury etc.)

I'm pretty sure he will also be the youngest to get the EBU title but can someone confirm this?

Either way, it just shows how fast Boxxer and Sky are pushing him because he's still only 21 years old. If you compare that to his rival Dalton Smith, he's calling out Harlem Eubank (who isn't very good imo, maybe english/british level) even though he's had more fights and is 26.

I don’t think European title level is what it once was and there’s a reason they’ve gone for the European title rather than the British as it’s got a weaker champion so they’re cherry picking a little.

They are moving Azim quickly though. His last opponent was real good matchmaking.

Azim will be a few days under 21 years, 9 months on fight night. So about 18 months diference.

In terms of other young winners of the EBU title, John Conteh was 21 years, 9-and-a-bit months when he won it. Billy Thompson won the lightweight title in 1948 when he was 21 years, 3 and a bit months. John Kelly was 21 and about 8 months when he won the bantamweight title in 1932. Dai Dower was only slightly older than that when he won the flyweight. There may be others. So Azim is in good company.

Azim seems a real talent and holding the euro title will enable him to have a higher calibre of opponents to develop his skills further.

I agree Tony - it’s good matchmaking and it’s something good to win.

Perhaps I’m wrong but I don’t think being European champ carries the same relevance it did 20 years ago. I could have probably named the bulk of European champs and with the European championship came high rankings with pretty much all of the bodies. Now I couldn’t even tell you who 2 European champs.
