Fury's legacy after the Usyk fight

Post by ALI »

Fury's legacy has taken a bit of a dent over the last few months IMO. First he gets floored and almost loses to Nganou who was making his pro debut! Wallin, who he had a very tough fight against, gets plastered by Joshua, and Wilder who he had 3 tough fights with goes and gets schooled by Parker who lost recently to Joe Joyce ffs. The only other name on his record worth noting is Klitschko, and lets be honest, as much of an achievement as it was, he was not interested in trying to put any hurt on Wlad he was happy to nick it on points, it was a boring fight. His legacy is now seriously lacking IMO.

Should he beat Usyk, and beat him well, he will cement his place among the top heavyweights in history, but for me, if he wants to be rated up their with past greats, he absolutely needs to fight Joshua straight after Usyk, and do a job on him too.

If he loses to Usyk, oh boy, his legacy is in tatters, in my humble opinion. It is an absolutely must win fight, and it is what makes this fight all the more interesting.

Win/loose, how do you see Fury's legacy after the Usyk fight?

Most boxers finish with a string of loses, and I don’t imagine Fury will be much different. It’s probably going to a thorough outclassing shutout pitched by the Ukrainian against a bloated Fury in 6 weeks.

I've got a feeling we'll see a much different fury. hes gone very quiet so must be knuckling down.

His trainer is definitely in the country this time so we must assume he is in training

The fight is 5 weeks out and we are speculating about legacy when we don't even know the result of the fight yet?

Legacy is an end of career assessment.

He just released a video calling Usyk a rabbit of all things! I cannot believe it! :o
Big John will probably get fired up soon as well.

I doubt he fights Usyk and I'd say he will be well beaten by Usyk if they do fight. He did beat Wlad in a dreary fight. I can't recall how I had it but I wasn't willing to bet on fury at even money after the final bell so I couldn't have been confident he won and neither were the bookies. Wilder is a poor champion and I think getting hurt so often by him doesn't look good. Parker would always have beaten wilder for me. Fury needs this win over Usyk to keep the hype he's built about his legacy. If he loses to Usyk, I think he will ultimately go down as a very average champ.

He has a pretty good legacy if you ask me.

Who should he have fought who he hasn’t fought ? People will now say Xhang or Parker like last year they were saying Joyce but none of these flavour of the month fighters are elite. The only guy he really should’ve fought who he didn’t was AJ

Both Fury and Usyk are clearly now slightly diminished fighters. I think Fury is less so and will win and that hopefully sets up a fight that will define this heavyweight era Fury v AJ albeit 5 years too late.

He's already got a solid Legacy I'd say. If he beats Usyk it will boost it significantly. The more convincingly he beats him the better.

After that I'd say the main fight he'd need on his ledger to is the big All U.K. Showdown with Anthony Joshua.

I feel like England deserves that fight, and it would boost the Legacy of both fighters for simply being in it.

The fight that will define this heavyweight era is Fury vs Usyk 1 for the undisputed. And if Fury defeats Usyk twice, he will have an undisputed legacy.

Win or lose people here will find a reason why his legacy doesn't add up to much.

Well, with those he compares himself to, his opposition hasn't been great.

Wilder, an end of career Klitschko, and a few Euro-level lads.
It's a decent resume, if we're talking top 3 British heavyweights, but in worldwide all-time rankings he's way out of the top tier.

If he’s less competitive than Joshua against Usyk, he will likely never be rated as highly in terms of British lists.

I feel Fury is in a no win situation against Usyk. And part of that is probably not been helped by Fury himself referring to Usyk as the middleweight and drawing scrutiny to Usyk being so much smaller than Tip-Toes Tyson Fury.

As identified, Fury's best wins have been properly tarnished .. Wallin and Wilder now seen as worthless, and even Klitschko win was after Jennings had made Wlad look bad a short time earlier.

If Fury wins against Usyk it will be against a much smaller fighter gaining him a much smaller if any significant kudos.
And a loss to Usyk will be catastrophic though .. he basically would just have 3 wins over Chisora to live off.

The rematch with 0-1 Ngannou looks likely at some point. :box:

I think that will be appealing to Ngannou too, as Fury seems to have lost all punching power. Ngannou will see it as a big payday but with little risk of being stopped or hurt.

But the point is, Fury didn't fight any of those names.
He should have fought AJ years ago .. he didn't.
He should have fought Joyce .. and didn't.
Zhang the same .. Hrg .. and even Dubois.
But he didn't, so his record is thread bare. He has been lucky that his fans keep swallowing his nonsense.

The top boy's at HW have multiple defences against other champs and top contenders, the likes of Louis, Ali, Holmes, Lewis etc. All well into double figures, Fury is know where near them. If he was to bear AJ and Usyk he would be the best of this era for sure but not one of the GOATS.

Means jack shit unless he wins.

There are plenty of forgetable boxers who've been involved in unification fights but only as the final piece for their opponent to collect all belts.

He might well be this generations Tony Tucker (from the 3 belt era).

Or it means that he will have done something that no heavyweight boxer has ever done before.
And the handful of posters who claimed he was too scared to fight Usyk will look even more ridiculous.

It’s common knowledge that Joshua turned the fight down twice in 9 months.
