Xander Zayas-Patrick Teixeira Moved Off Feb. 16 ESPN Show, Now Targeted For June

Xander Zayas and Patrick Teixeira will have to wait a few months longer for their crossroads bout.

Boxing Scene has learned that the junior middleweight fight between the unbeaten rising prospect and former titlist has been pushed back to June. They were previously due to appear as the co-feature of the February 16 Top Rank on ESPN card at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City.

No official reason was given for the delay. Both camps refused comment to Boxing Scene seeking clarification on the development which was first reported by ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger.

The rest of the show will remain intact. The event will feature the Top Rank debut of O’Shaquie Foster (21-2, 12KOs), who will defend his WBC junior lightweight title versus Abraham Nova (23-1, 16KOs). Boxing Scene has learned that the Andres Cortes-Bryan Chevalier junior lightweight clash will move into the co-feature slot.

Zayas planned to return to his normal rate of activity after he was slowed by injuries last year. He ended 2023 on a high note with a fifth-round knockout of Spain’s Jorge Fortea. Their December 9 clash took place at Charles F. Dodge City Center in Pembroke Pines, mere minutes from his adopted hometown of Sunrise, Florida.

The immediate demand afterward was a return to his home away from home in New York City.

“February 16 back at home. MSG… Patrick Teixeira, you’re next,” Zayas declared after the fight.

Only part of that plan now remains intact.

Brazil’s Teixeira (33-4, 24KOs) has won his last two starts after a rough three-year stretch that saw inactivity due to visa delays, and three straight defeats. After his last win, he called for a fight versus Zayas among others.

“I want a fight outside Brazil; I have a lot of opponents I would like to face 154,” Teixeira previously told Boxing Scene after his August 27 second-round knockout win over Carlos Rivero in Santo Amaro, Brazil. “The one I most want to face would be Xander Zayas.”

Xander Zayas to Face Patrick Teixeira on Puerto Rican Day Weekend in New York

Xander Zayas will fulfill a dream when he headlines the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York this summer.

Zayas will take on Brazilian former world titleholder Patrick Teixeira in a 10-round clash on June 8 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The fight will signal the announcement of Zayas as a main-event fighter and the potential start of a long run of fighting on the weekend of New York’s Puerto Rican Day Parade.

It will have been 19 years since Miguel Cotto defended his junior welterweight crown against Muhammad Abdullaev as part of the same celebration, so there is some symmetry to Zayas (18-0, 12 KOs) going after his 19th professional win on his fight date.

Zayas will be following in the footsteps of Puerto Rican boxing legends who conquered New York, such as Hector Camacho, Felix Trinidad and Cotto. Now, Zayas hopes it’s his turn to fill a legendary venue and fulfill the potential he showed after making history in 2019 as the youngest fighter, at age 16, to sign with Top Rank.

“Representing Puerto Rico on a date in which Boricua culture is celebrated and honored represents a sacred commitment that I have with my people,” Zayas said. “On June 8, I won’t just be fighting for myself. I’ll be fighting for every Puerto Rican who always perseveres when the going gets tough.”

The bout will mark Zayas’ first fight of 2024, as well as something quite a bit more personal. Headlining a card is something Zayas has dreamed of, along with longtime coach Javier Centeno, since early in his career.

“This is my first main event and my first fight against a former world champion,” Zayas said. “I plan on carrying my flag and making it shine on one of the world’s biggest stages, ‘The Mecca of Boxing.’”

The co-feature will see featherweight Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington take on tough veteran Jose Enrique Vivas in a 10-round fight.

Preliminary bouts include:

Junior middleweight Jahi Tucker (10-1-1, 5 KOs), from Deer Park, New York, will face Quincy LaVallais (17-4-1, 12 KOs) in an eight-round fight.

U.S. Olympian Tiger Johnson (12-0, 6 KOs) will put his perfect record on the line against Tarik Zaina (13-1-1, 8 KOs) in an eight-round fight.

Welterweight Elijah Flores (8-0, 3 KOs) will face Derrick Whitley Jr. (7-4-1) in a six-rounder.Junior lightweight prospect Ofacio Falcon (10-0, 6 KOs) will meet Antonio Dunton El Jr. (5-2-2, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder.

Recent Top Rank signee heavyweight Ali Feliz (1-0, 1 KO) is set to take on Lemir Isom-Riley (4-2, 2 KOs).

Nisa Rodriguez (1-0), will be featured in a women’s middleweight bout against Jordanne Garcia ( 4-3-3), and flyweight Andy Dominguez (10-1, 6 KOs) is scheduled to take on Cristopher Rios (10-1, 7 KOs) in an eight-rounder.

Yup, maybe a little too relaxed, but that was a good performance and result regardless of the late notice. :salut:

End of the 4th, looks like Teixeira is fulfilling his role as the bad guy that won't fight.

Round 5
They're going through the motions.
Teixeira making little effort and Zayas not pressuring enough.
It certainly isn't a Miguel Cotto Puerto Rican weekend type of fight.

End of 6

It's not a boring fight.
It's just one guy satisfactorily beating the other.
Zayas up big on the cards I would have thought.

Zayas landed consistently on Teixeira body throughout, looked like he shook Teixeria in the last minute with a shot.
It's one way traffic for Zayas.

Eighth

All incoming from Zayas, Teixeira pretty much thrown in the towel competitively wise, it's just Zayas hasn't got the punch to stop him.
He's been a perfect fall guy.

10th and final round

Much the same as before.
This is what you get when you try to please everyone and send the crowd home happy, bad match making for the main event.
Good undercard, lame main event.

Zayas wins a UD
