Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Hasanboy Dusmatov: WBA Orders Mandatory Strawweight Title Fight

Thammanoon Niyomtrong is once again locked into a mandatory title defense.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the sport’s longest reigning current titlist was ordered to next face Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov. The WBA strawweight title fight was mandated on Wednesday evening, the timing which could allow Dusmatov to fight for his first major pro belt ahead of his second Olympic bid.

“The body sent the communication to both fighters’ teams, who will have a period of 30 days to negotiate, starting this February 7 and ending next March 8,” WBA Championship Committee chairman Carlos Chavez instructed both parties in an official letter obtained by Boxing Scene. “Niyomtrong’s Super Champion status was conditioned to an eighteen (18) month mandatory defense period. Since his last mandatory fight was on November 29, 2018, the lapse has been expired since May 28, 2020 and he must face the next available contender, which in this case is Dusmatov.”

Thailand’s Niyomtrong (24-0, 9 KOs) has held his title since June 2016, when he upgraded his secondary title after a twelve-round unanimous decision over Nicaragua’s Byron Rojas. Eleven defenses have followed for the 33-year-old from Surin, Thailand.

None have come, however, since a July 2022 points win over countryman and former WBC titlist Wanheng ‘TBE’ Menayothin in Chonburi, Thailand. Niyomtrong—more affectionately known as Knockout CP Market— spent the latter half of the year and all of 2023 attempting to sort out an ordered fight versus secondary WBA titleholder Erick Rosa.

The ordeal left Niyomtrong out of the ring for all of 2023. He was left off the hook and permitted to keep his title.

Dusmatov (6-0, 5 KOs) turned pro in November 2019, three years after he a captured a Gold medal during the 2016 Rio Olympics. The 30-year-old from Andijan, Uzbekistan remains on a mission to do the same in the 2024 Paris Olympics, as he qualified for his native country after he qualified for his native country when he won the 2023 Asian Games outright.

His pro career has been slowed as a result, though he has done just enough to elevate to the top spot in the WBO 105-pound rankings. Dusmatov last fought as a pro in a ten-round shutout of Siphamandla Baleni last November 6 in Polyana, Russia. The feat marked his lone distance fight to date.

Weren't there some visa shenanigans that scuppered the Rosa fight? It's the usual mess caused by the plethora of WBA titles, Rosa hasn't even defended the 'Regular' title since 2021 and has only fought once since then. I'd like to see Niyomtrong against Shigeoka but we rarely see unification bouts in this division.

This fight never happened because Dusmatov opted to go to the Olympics instead.

Niyomtrong should next be out against Alex Winwood (4-0, 2 KOs) of Australia as the WBA has ordered the fight as a mandatory defence. Reigning WBA minimumweight “super” champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong (24-0, 9 KOs) of Thailand, hasn't fought since defeating long-time minimumweight ruler Chayaphon Moonsri in 2022.

Niyomtrong’s manager, Chatchai Sasakul, has confirmed that the fight is set to take place in Perth, Australia, on September 7.

now theres a name i recognize, former world champ who was once handily beating very young manny pac before getting ko'd

at this weight, more money in the ams for hasanboy, who i think would have won this fight. he got at least 50k from the iba as a gold medal bonus, and uzbek gov also pays 6 figures usd for gold. no managers fees there

True. Purse bids for this weight usually won’t see even the defending champ taking home six figures so wise to stay in the ams if he can…

Thammanoon Niyomtrong Edges Alex Winwood, Extends Boxing’s Longest Active Title Reign

Thammanoon Niyomtrong retained his WBA strawweight title by the slimmest of margins.

The sport’s longest reigning active male titleholder rode two knockdowns to a majority decision win over Alex Winwood. Niyomtrong won 114-112 on two cards, overruling a 113-113 score Saturday at HBF Arena in Perth, Western Australia

It should have been wider, but the right fighter won in the end,

Winwood was angling to best Jeff Fenech’s Australian record of winning a version of the world title in less than seven fights. He came up short against the longest-reigning titleholder in the game.

This bout is listed as a non-title fight as are Freshmart's previous fights too.

They don't recognise him as the WBA champion for some strange reason...

Ah, right you are, I remembered incorrectly. I had checked his profile on a rival site and they don't have him as WBA champion they have Erick Rosa instead, they don't even have him ranked. Weird...
