Arsen Goulamirian-Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez WBA Title Fight Set, March 30 In Greater Los Angeles Area

Arsen Goulamirian is finally set for his U.S. debut—and just to fight in general.

A date and general location are now attached to Goulamirian’s WBA cruiserweight title defense versus Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez. Boxing Scene has confirmed that the fight will headline a March 30 DAZN show from a venue to be determined in the greater Los Angeles area.

Goulamirian recently met with Golden Boy to finalize the terms of the fight, confirming a prior Boxing Scene report that the two were due to meet in March.

The fight comes in lieu of a previously ordered mandatory title defense versus former IBF cruiserweight titlist Yuniel Dorticos. The matchup was parked for several months along with several other ordered fights that were not advanced prior to the end of 2023. The WBA since ruled that Goulamirian could next defend versus Mexico’s Ramirez, with the winner likely to have to defend versus Dorticos.

Two cruiserweights previously ordered to enter separate title fights will instead face each other.

Goulamirian (27-0, 18 KOs) has held the full WBA cruiserweight title since 2019, upon the divisional departure of former undisputed champ Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) who has since claimed the unified WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles.

However, the Armenia-born boxer—who now lives in France and trains in Big Bear, California—has only fought once in the past four years. That came in a twelve-round, unanimous decision over Aleksei Egorov last November 19 in Le Cannet, France.

An unhealthy mixture of injuries and legal issues beyond his control has slowed his reign to a crawl. Goulamirian was due to face Tommy McCarthy on September 10 in Marseille but the event was canceled due to a bizarre scenario where Canal+—the network who agreed to air the event—abruptly bowed out of the sport altogether.

Goulamirian was also rumored to be in talks with England’s Richard Riakporhe last year, though the fight never materialized.

Ramirez (45-1, 30 KOs) entered the cruiserweight conversation after a ten-round points win over former WBO light heavyweight titlist Joe Smith Jr. Their October 7 bout saw Ramirez—a former WBO super middleweight titleholder—make his cruiserweight debut, though contested a contracted 193-pound weight limit for their DAZN headliner from Chelsea Ballroom at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

It marked the first ring appearance for the 32-year-old southpaw from Mazatlan, Mexico since a November 2022 lopsided defeat to WBA light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol in Abu Dhabi. Ramirez was due to face Gabriel Rosado last March but was pulled from the DAZN event when he entered fight week well over the light heavyweight limit.

The win over Smith put Ramirez in title contention at his new weight. However, he was previously ordered to next face former three-time champ Mairis Briedis (28-2, 20 KOs) for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title. The matter was scheduled for a January 16 purse bid hearing before it was canceled outright.

Both wound up heading in separate directions. Latvia’s Briedis will next face Sydney’s Jai Opetaia in a rematch to their July 2022 thriller. Opetaia dethroned Briedis to win the IBF title, which he defended once before he vacated last December.

Ramirez previously held the WBO super middleweight title from April 2016 through his April 2019 light heavyweight debut. He made five successful defenses of the belt but has only fought one title fight since then—his aforementioned defeat to Bivol.

Press Release

There will be a clash of titans on Saturday, March 30, as WBA Cruiserweight Super World Champion Arsen “Feroz” Goulamirian (27-0, 19 KOs) of Yerevan, Armenia makes his U.S. fighting debut to defend his championship hardware against hungry former World Champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (45-1, 30 KOs). Ramirez will be hoping to break records yet again to become the first Mexican to become a cruiserweight champion. The momentous, 12-round fight is presented in association with Y12 Boxing and will take place at YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood and broadcast live on DAZN.

“I am excited to fight for the first time in the United States, and of all places Los Angeles,” said Arsen Goulamirian. “There are no excuses now. I know Zurdo wants to be a world champion, but he’s going to have to go through me first. I will successfully defend my World Championship belt this March 30!”

“I’m back! And I’m ready to become the first Mexican cruiserweight champion. When I made the move to this division, I had my eyes set on Arsen and I can’t wait to showcase my skills in the ring,” said Zurdo Ramirez. “I feel extremely comfortable at this weight class and will look to become the undisputed champion. I want to thank DAZN, Golden Boy, the WBA, my team and family for all the support and I look forward to seeing everyone on the 30th.”

“There has never been a Mexican world champion in both the Super Middleweight and Cruiserweight divisions, but ‘Zurdo’ has always been special, and I fully expect him to walk away with the WBA belt on March 30,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya. “On the heels of being the first Mexican Super Middleweight, Zurdo can now do the same in the cruiserweight division. With all of this motivation, I would expect a knockout — and a spectacular one.”

"We're excited to welcome Golden Boy Boxing back to the YouTube Theater for the second time, solidifying our venue as a premier destination for world-class boxing in the heart of Inglewood." said Adolfo Romero, vice president programming and booking, SoFi Stadium, YouTube Theater and Hollywood Park. "In what promises to be an exciting showdown, Arsen 'Feroz' Goulamirian will make his highly anticipated U.S. debut, facing off against Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez in what is sure to be one of YouTube Theater's most competitive main events to date."

ALEXIS ROCHA TO FACE FREDRICK LAWSON IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF GOULAMIRIAN-RAMIREZ

Welterweight prospect Alexis Rocha (23-2, 15 KOs) will be facing Fredrick Lawson (30-4, 22 KOs) in a 10-round bout in his return to the YouTube Theater after being the main event last January 2023 for the first-ever boxing event in the venue’s history.

The clash will be the co-main event ahead of the cruiserweight clash between WBA titlist Arsen Goulamirian (27-0, 19 KOs) against former titlist Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (45-1, 30 KOs).

The fight night is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Y12 Boxing and will be broadcast live on DAZN.

“First and foremost, I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions, my fans, and my entire team for their constant support,” said Rocha. “My last fight did not go the way that I expected it to. I let a lot of people down, including myself. This next stage of my career is my revenge tour. This is when I become everything I know I was meant to be in this sport. The pain I feel from my last loss will be the pain every opponent feels moving forward.”

“I would like to personally thank the Golden Boy himself, Oscar De La Hoya, for this great opportunity of redemption,” said Fredrick Lawson. “Also, I would like to thank DAZN. I know that Alexis is a top fighter, but so am I, and I will prove it to everyone on March 30. My manager Jacob Zwennes is very confident that I will beat Rocha.”

Also on the DAZN broadcast, Ricardo Sandoval (23-2, 16 KOs) and Mexico’s Luis “Zari” Hernandez (13-6-1, 8 KOs) will battle it out in a 10-round flyweight bout. Opening the broadcast, Santiago Dominguez (26-0, 20 KOs) will make his U.S. Golden Boy debut against Jose Sanchez (14-3-1, 4 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight fight. Dominguez was last seen on the undercard of the Yokasta Valle vs. Anabel Ortiz world championship fight in Costa Rica.

On the preliminary card, in a 10-round light heavyweight clash, Kareem Hackett (12-0, 6 KOs) will be taking on Rowdy Montgomery (10-5-1, 7 KOs). Also in the preliminaries, Jonathan “Sugarcane” Cañas (3-0, 2 KOs) will participate in a four-round lightweight fight. Making his professional debut, Ronaldo Mancilla will participate in a four-round light heavyweight fight. In a four-round welterweight bout, Deni Davtian of Kharkiv, Ukraine will also make their professional debut. Opponents for each will be announced soon.

linares has a gig supervising WBA title fights now... Thats kinda cool. but i feel mabey he is a bit too close to the game... I wonder if they would let him supervise down 135/140 in and around the guys he use to fight and sparr.

Also long term golden boy guy on a goldenboy card...

I dont think supervisor has much power, and i love jobs for retired fighters. just weird...

Dominguez vs Sanchez

Sanchez was crafty and clever throughout and defo won a round or two and some moments, but "this is the hurt business" - he was getting hurt more even when he was winning.

One judge had him winning 97-93 ?! :maybe:

geeze the are dick riding ramirez...

they are acting like theres a big size difference... ramirez is taller, and was probably cutting weight from 190+ his entire 175 carrer... Goularmiraian has consistantly come out well under 200 implying he isnt cutting weight so is a tiny cruiser.

goularmiraian has also not beat anyone good ever..

Anyway, i hope we get ramirez vs jai next... but i feel ramerez team is too smart for that (unless saudis throw cash)

Zurdo, as the evidently lesser cruiserweight who knows he can get rocked easily by Goulamirian, focuses on movement, bodywork and volume, perfectly sticking to his masterplan and finally freeing the WBA title.

However, he could hardly become the undisputed as of now

He seems to be pretty popular.
He's got almost 4 million follower on Instagram, which nowadays kinda means alot.

Also, beating a guy who was 27-0 and champ for like 4 1/2 years is gonna look good to the casuals.
They don't know this champ was basically on european level.

The Jai fight would be great. I also believe only the Saudis could make this happen, though.

Had 118-110 Ramirez as well, it's was a domination, Goulamirian came forward but was looking for one big shot and was picked off all night, Ramirez brought the volume and movement, didn't mind standing his ground and exchanging at times either did Ramirez, he boxed an intelligent fight, Goulamirian looked like he was landing the heavier punches but they were few and far between, Zurdo put the punches together nicely then moved out for the next phase, Goulamirian looked bang average but I give Ramirez full credit, he made that look easy
