Can anyone here remember which of the really big fights we didn't get to see live last year?

Off the top of my head...

Tito vs Mayorga
DK's Heavyweight bills. (not particularly big, but quite important)
Corrales vs Frietas
Judah vs Spinks 1&2
Tarver vs Roy jones 1 (not sure about this actually)

James asked the question, didn't get to see live?

I'll give it a go a bit later on, but it is a shit load.

might be easier to list the ones we did get to see live, then work out the rest??

Jones - Tarver 1 was on BBC on the amazing Sunday at 12am slot, Kevo. The rematch wasn't shown at all (another that pisses me off, imagine the shock watching that one live?)

You'd perhaps need to sit and flick through the months on the boxrec database to get the answer to this question. I'll do the months of January to February just now...


January to February 2004

Antonio Margarito versus Hercules Kyvelos - Rafael Marquez also defended his IBF title on this (shite) card (delayed, BBC or Sky?).

Erik Morales versus Jesus Chavez (Cotto was on undercard) (delayed, Sky)

BBC showed the RJJ - Glen Johnson fight, I was well impressed with them for that, although it was 2 days later

Out of a possible 30 'big' fights we saw a total of 4 live. All were on PPV.

fornicating pathetic. I'm paying nearly 500 quid a year in Sky subscription, most of which I don't want or need, and I get the opportunity to see four big fights a year, for which I pay another 60 pounds.

if i were just a boxing fan i have to admit i wouldnt have sky anymore, unfortunatley my passion for rugby, cricket and the fantasy channel also dictates. :P

the coverage at present is beyond woeful and bordering on insulting.

Why don´t you London guys just buy one payperview fee together and watch the fights together or copy it for the other guys?

I'm getting ever closer to doing this. I've also had to pay an extra £6 for two footy matches I wanted to watch.

I can see im not the only one who is fornicating bitter over having to wait till friday to see EM v MP

Will ditch Sky next month after getting 3 months half price (i complained that i thought all their coverage was shite and was going to cancel). Football season is over soon anyway and its always on in the boozer.

Sky's boxing coverage just gets worse very year.

Thanks for this i've just cancelled Sky and i wanted to send them an email telling exactly why.

This is it guys. Boxing is dead. There is a shocking dearth of cards around, even 6 months ago I'm sure there was more to discuss, more cards? Even this forum is drying up, there used to be tons of new posts and lengthening threads, current scene has been shit for ages but the british forum has always been full of good talk.

Dennis hobson is trying to abandon his sinking ship in favour of a climbing aboard a punctured dinghy. The cards are evaporating from our boxing sphere, leaving a sludge of recycled talk to slowly run down the crapper.

Something has to happen though. More terrestrial coverage for a start. I'd say 95% of British people couldn't tell you Skelton's the heavyweight British champ. 95% of those who at least know boxer's names think, for example, JC and Ricky Hatton are something to rival Ali. Less sanctioning bodies, obviously. Down to one, maximum. No more Transgalactical Interpole African youth Masters titles. This in turn would cut a lot of the bearocracy (ok, however you spell that, it isn't like that) world class fights would be more frequent, people would have more to say, and Blowe would have nothing to worry about. Problem is, of course, we all know the solutions to the problem, it's finding a way to impliment the solution. Maybe Scotland Yard should hold an amnesty for anyone armed with a WBU title.

Sadly the tragedies in boxing seem to have tenfold the impact of the great fights. Fighter wins the British title no one bats an eyelid. Fighter dies fighting for the British title and suddenly he is euologized by sap hacks out to make their name; chapters in books dedicated to ring deaths by authors who have no clue about the mechanics of the 'fight game'. It is truly sick.

1995 was the year that really killed off boxing in this country as a major sport, in my opinion. The Watson tragedy was still fresh in memory, then the year starts out with a mega fight going wrong on national telly. If ever the mourning merchants needed copy to replace the waning Michael Watson story - they had it now. Then in October, Friday the 13th no less, James Murray collapses at the Hospitality Inn and a riot kicks off. This fight was on Sky, if I recall, but they showed the horror at the end on the (terrestial) news up here.

That last fight was too close to home, was too distressing, too much of an accumulative effect to brush off and look forward to a new year in boxing, for me personally (being a 12 year old...). I had a lay off for a few years but still watched all the big fights. I bet there are loads who have never tuned back in.

Boxing could be given a considerable kick-start this June with the big Hatton fight. But it would require that a) Hatton wins b) he is able to stay at the top for at least 2/3 defences c) loads of first time punters buying the PPV. None of these things have much hope of happening, in my view. Just need to suck it up, sit and wait.

Yeah joking apart you would think that Barry Hearn could come up with something as he has a hand in plenty of sports Darts, Snooker, etc.
I think if the Eastman/Witter bill done reasonable numbers Setanta could arrange something long-term with Hennessy Sports
