Damning Calzaghe artical by Woods Camp on Seconds Out
By Clive Bernath: Richard Poxon, the trainer of IBF light-heavyweight champion Clinton Woods has accused WBO super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe of trying to ride on the back of the Sheffield star's recent world title success.
Woods scored an impressive and career defining win over big punching American Rico Hoye on March 4 to win the vacant IBF crown but Poxon believes the undefeated Welshman is just trying to gain publicity at the expense of Woods' recent success.
"Clinton was prepared to fight Calzaghe a few months back," said Poxon, who is also the matchmaker for promoters Fight Academy. "We signed for the fight he (Calzaghe) didn't. But now we are the champion all of a sudden they want to fight us."
Prior to winning the world title, Woods signed to fight Calzaghe but the contest fell through when the IBF refused to sanction the fight as an official IBF eliminator. And of course now with Woods being the champion the logistics in the powers of negotiations has dramatically changed in his favour.
"As far as I'm concerned Calzaghe is just trying to ride on the back of Clinton's success," said Poxon. "Calzaghe has not got any creditability left but he is trying to use Clinton to get some back. Also Clinton is now the champion and if anyone's gonna call the shots he is."
"If Calzaghe really is interested in fighting Clinton get his promoter to contact Dennis Hobson. They (Sports Network) should also not assume that they will promote the fight. We are the champion and are more than capable of putting the fight on ourselves.
"Having said that, myself, Dennis and Clinton have not really discussed seriously the possibility of fighting Calzaghe," continued, Poxon. " He (Calzaghe) won't fight any decent super-middleweight so why would he want to fight a genuine world champion like Clinton? In any case how can we even be sure that he would turn up?"
Poxon was referring to the late notice cancellations of the Brian Magee fight last weekend and when Calzaghe pulled out of a showdown with then IBF titleholder Glen Johnson at short notice in June 2004.
The pullout against Johnson was attributed to Calzaghe sustaining a back injury while the Magee contest was scrapped at 36hours notice because WBO rules state that voluntary title defences cannot take place less than 60 days before a mandatory (in this case v Mario Veit).
March 21, 2005.
Despite the sentiments in this piece, I see Woods vs Calzaghe possibly happening sometime later in the year or next year even. That's Calzaghe's defining fight and it opens up the door to a lot more stiffs.

The thing that I see derailing this fight, is Calzaghe demanding too much money, and Woods getting pissed off and telling him to go poke himself.
I'm in no great hurry to see Calzaghe get a crack at woods. Yes, if it happened it would be a good fight, but I'd like to see Woods make a couple of defences first.

Personally I don't think he would have done any better.
Calzaghe has never even fought at LH, so quite why anyone thinks he would do better than Clinton is beyond me. Calzaghe has never fought anyone of the calibre of a peak Jones in his entire career. The Jones that Woods fought was seemingly invulnerable.

It's the 'glorious O' effect all these padded fraud champs have. The people who believe the PR fodder simply cannot picture their fighter performing worse than in the matches they've seen them in. So Calzaghe blasts out a clubfighter and it becomes common knowledge he'd do the same to Ottke. It's all bullshit.

What World Class fighter in his prime has Calzaghe ever faced?jamesmcdonnell wrote:Personally I don't think he would have done any better.

I think that's the point James is making.Graham Brett wrote:What World Class fighter in his prime has Calzaghe ever faced?jamesmcdonnell wrote:Personally I don't think he would have done any better.

Which I concur with....

Perhaps Allegedly Frank can answer this?
My point is he has proved over the years he is happy with his WBO lot so I wouldnt be at all surprised if he did price himself out of a move to light heavy. He's talked about it for years but never done it why now?csmith wrote:the irony would be if joe priced himself out of a fight he desperately needsnickd wrote:Why ironic? He had a fight he both needed and wanted last year against Johnson and he fucked that up with a delay followed by a cancellation.

fornicate Calzaghe. He has pussyfooted around for years with one excuse after another whilst coming out with the same old drivel over and over again.
The bloke bores the socks off me and I would be quite happy if he never fought again.
Woods should entice Jones over here and fight him.
Woods has had three fights which are bigger than any fight Calzaghe has ever been involved in.
Bringing Jones over here would be a major coup and one that would be remembered for many years to come.
In my opinion Woods is in front of Clazaghe now, who has missed the boat.
I reckon Dennis Hobson will deliver Jones in England.

Well, if he does fight again, it's the one which makes the most sense. No sense in fighting Johnson or Tarver again, but I think Clinton will do a number on him too. Jones just looks so drained at LH these days, he's got no energy at all.Loynesy wrote:I don't think Jones will fight Woods but it shows the great job Hobson has done with Clinton. Roy Jones people phoned Woods to congratulate him as did Bernard Hopkins. Funny how being a nice guy in the toughest of sports can still pay dividends...
