Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
I see the Matchroom Prizefighter tournament scheduled for 31 March in Japan has now been cancelled. No reasons given, Matchroom didn't even announce it themselves, it appears that they just fed the news to Matchroom friendly twitter accounts for them to report.
After the failure of Matchroom Spain and Italy, where they no longer promote, Matchroom Australia, where they did one show in October 2022 and didn't return, the Matchroom UAE Champion Series - which lasted for one fight card in November 2022 and wasn't mentioned since, is it safe to say their global adventures have been a disaster?
I feel this has correlated with the weakening of their fight cards, no stadium shows, empty arenas and a move to smaller venues this year.
I think it's about time for Eddie and co to accept this and focus on making their product stronger in the UK, which has been in decline for some time.

I think the Prizefighter series could be rebooted in the ME. Maybe a ‘Masters’ category?

The reality is that Eddie will solely care about the profit he can make.The_Don1 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 06:32 I see the Matchroom Prizefighter tournament scheduled for 31 March in Japan has now been cancelled. It seems like DAZN were no longer as willing to shell out for fights/fighters that don’t generate a return. Hence no longer overpaying guys in the US and cutting the cord on shows in traditionally smaller boxing countries like Italy/Spain.
It seems Matchroom are now focusing partly on shows where they can generate a rights fee, like what was meant to happen in Japan.
I’m not sure what happened there but I’d imagine the rights fee/deposit wasn’t paid. Who knows though.
There’s a bit of talk they’ll be doing a show in Africa this year (Equatorial Guinea) and they’ve got pretty heavy involvement in all 3 Saudi shows this year. Plus Monaco, Mexico and I’d imagine another country or two.
I’d prefer they were doing more in the U.K. I’d still imagine they would have done more U.K. shows than any of the other promoters by the end of May but the quality needs to get better.
I am surprised they haven’t done more in Abu Dhabi though. Saying that I’m not sure they’ve got the depth to their stable to deliver big shows in their usual markets, now Saudi and have a couple in Abu Dhabi too.

Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
that's disappointing, was looking forward to it, would have been a good time televised for UK too.
Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
Yep, good shout about the rights fee, he'll go anywhere that pays a fee to stage the fights it seems.maverick23 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 11:29The reality is that Eddie will solely care about the profit he can make.The_Don1 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 06:32 I see the Matchroom Prizefighter tournament scheduled for 31 March in Japan has now been cancelled. Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
showing my lack of knowledge - does a rights fee basically mean a third party/the venue pays you to hold a show there?
Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
I don't know the exact ins and outs of it, but basically yes is the answer. The Caribe Royale in Florida pays Matchroom a site fee, hence why it's a popular venue with Matchroom these days, there's likely plenty others too.SeanBrennan wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 11:49 showing my lack of knowledge - does a rights fee basically mean a third party/the venue pays you to hold a show there?

Yeah - as any promoter would/should as it shouldn’t mean the fighters inflated purses are being paid for by the fans.The_Don1 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 11:43Yep, good shout about the rights fee, he'll go anywhere that pays a fee to stage the fights it seems.maverick23 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 11:29The reality is that Eddie will solely care about the profit he can make.The_Don1 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 06:32 I see the Matchroom Prizefighter tournament scheduled for 31 March in Japan has now been cancelled. Australia (Perth in particular) are paying rights fees for events with WWE and the Kambosos fight against Loma.
TKO (UFC/WWE) are doing loads of them at the moment.
Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
He's promoting in the UK, US, Mexico and occasionally elsewhere. He's one of biggest promoters in the world, but, like always, some people have to focus on the negatives.The_Don1 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 06:32 I see the Matchroom Prizefighter tournament scheduled for 31 March in Japan has now been cancelled. Exactly. Some do it for sports washing (Saudi). Some do it because they want to (Monte Carlo). Others see it as a way to boost tourism/their name/footfall to their casino (Caribe Royal, Perth, Abu Dhabi etc).SeanBrennan wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 11:49 showing my lack of knowledge - does a rights fee basically mean a third party/the venue pays you to hold a show there?
Tv/streaming platforms are, mostly, moving away from a loss making model so the promoters have to be more creative about where to get the money from.
Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
Even the biggest Matchroom die hard can't fail to notice the decline of their product, I can't recall the last time they sold out an arena in the UK, so much so they moved to using smaller venues this year.jwfg wrote: ↑15 Mar 2024, 13:02He's promoting in the UK, US, Mexico and occasionally elsewhere. Have their US ventures been a roaring success? Maybe for the fighters who were massively overpaid in the early days.
It's a point worthy of discussion.

Cancelled due to astronomical costs.
I going all over the world with WBSS and i wrongly presumed i was going to japan for the inoue final.
Costs were obscene

I hope it gets revived.
Re: Matchrooms 'Global' promotion
There is a new game in town called Saudi which has changed everything in a way that nobody else can compete with .
The fighters managers and promotors all want a slice of that dollar and you only have to look at eddie and fwank now almost brothers in arms as a result , abandoning previous rivalry and distain about working together .

I’d take the bet but there’s no way to be able to prove it as Matchroom aren’t going to come out and say what they were planning was too expensive.Spud wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 13:44I honestly dont know but am willing to bet i am right.maverick23 wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 09:20Is that the actual reason this Matchroom show is off or just what you think?
I’d imagine it’s more likely that the rights fee for the show isn’t coming through.

thanks. I'm not the best traveled, I class Hull as abroad as you have to pay a toll of £1.50 to get over Humber Bridge.1504017 wrote: ↑18 Mar 2024, 14:49In Japan, everything, literally everything is very expensiveSeanBrennan wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 13:47thanks Spud, is it just the case that it is super expensive putting a show on in Japan?
