Bad hard sparring

Post by 1545256 »

Hi guys, I’ve been training for 3 months now. Training 5h a week. I have decent technique on pads and light sparring. Today I had my first hard spar today against an expierenced Russian boxer. the moment I get hit by 3-5 hard punches I lose the control and forget everything. I don’t even attack or trow a decent smash kartsjab. This went on for 5 rounds. Had a bleeding nose and severe headache after. Fully got beaten up. My mental health was very bad after the spar. Did the my opponent go to hard? Do you have some advice or tips how to get better or deal with the bad thoughts after.

My coach said we won’t do this again any time soon. we will focus more on technical/light sparring. he said it’s good I did not give up and he wanted to see my mental strength.

being big for my age and having no other kids my age at the gym, i usually had to spar with guys several years older with much more experience. they got the better of me. this includes as a 13 year old facicng a 24 year old national runner up. but it was always controlled spars . still full punches, but it would never get even close to the point where someone was beating on the other. coaches made it clear ahead of time and also spoke to us between rounds

a beatdown for a begginer from a more experienced guy sounds like a big red flag as to your training environment

as for mental health, remember that youre just a begginer. even excellent boxers took losses and pastings at the start. joe louis was knocked down 7x in his first am fight. olympic bronzze medalist and british champ david price talked about how he got outclassed in the gym starting out with older more experienced boxers. andy ruiz posted photos of him taking losses in his first amateur fights, etc

Getting put in with an experienced boxer is OK but 5 rounds first time out doesn't make sense especially if you were not doing well. Your coach sounds like he doesn't know what he is doing. My coach put me in with pros before my first fight including Dwight Muhammad Quai but only 2 rounds with him. Sparring better boxers will help make you better but there is a fine line between learning and getting your butt kicked and not learning. How old are you and where are you from?
