Gene Fulmer vs Terrance Crawford

Post by robbydecker »

At 160...? Maybe 154..?
12 Rounds.
I wonder if someone such as Gene Fulmer would've actually fought at 160, or would find it more suitable to
Campaign at 154...? :maybe:

Assuming they fought at 160, I could see Crawford still being a force to be reckoned with.
A scheduled 12 round bout at 160 would likely go the distance.
I see it being very 50-50'ish.
Crawford's reach advantage would present the biggest obstacle for Fulmer.
Fulmer's Strength would present the biggest obstacle for Crawford.

Gene Fullmer would overwhelm Terence Crawford. I don't think that Crawford has the punching power nor the stamina to stop Fullmer.

I think that Fullmer's conditioning and upper body strength would be for Crawford too much to handle.

Fullmer by knockout in ten a la Benny "Kid" Paret fight. It would be brutal. Very brutal.

I totally agree that it'd be at the least a good fight. Might even be a great bout, regardless who wins, and the ending result.
Good point about Crawford being a 165 lb man, while in the ring, campaigning at welter(147).
I'm assuming he'll probably remain as a 165 lb man, while in the ring, while campaigning at Jr MW(154).
If Crawford winds up eventually going for the title at 160, then I'd assume he'd then be in the ring only slightly heavier than 165. As for pointing out Crawford being taller than Fulmer, in this hypothetical dream fight scenario, from what I know, Fulmer was 5'8, which is the same height as Crawford. But yeah, in the reach department, Crawford would have at least several inches worth of advantage.

If the rumored Crawford vs Canelo fight winds up coming off. We'll actually be able to assess Crawford fighting a guy of this size.

My point was on same day weigh ins - not sure it was clear. Gene was same day, so crawford of now would be a mw in the fulmer era

But yeah a good fight

Fullmer's rough tactics and power would be too much for Bud Crawford to handle as Fullmer would take a decision or stopping him late.

That's what I'm talking about. The great Gene Fullmer was as strong as an ox. Too much upper body strength for Terence "Bud" Crawford to handle.

Fullmer was a smart fighter. The sportswriters don't give him enough credit for that. When he was facing sluggers, he boxed them. When he was facing boxers, he used his upper body strength to overwhelm them. He was very versatile.
