Interesting looking at his record as a fighter – lost 7 times and 5 of them were cuts stoppages.

He made boxing headlines in an absolute war, a southern area title fight against the big punching Essex hard case Trevor Smith, who would’ve been British champion if he hadn’t run into the mercurial Kirkland Lang at the top of his game. I’m pretty sure his fight with IJL was British fight of the year.

not watched it but will do so this weekend. I do like Groves' interviews. Ian's with BIBA now isn't he, good luck to him.
Ian came across well when he was on a prison documentary, he is/was a PO.

Comes across terribly on the podcast. Talking absolute nonsense. He says at one point that in or after the eighth round he thought Catterall was going to win. That would make his eventual score of Taylor by 3 rounds impossible wouldn’t it?

I was ringside for Smith Vs John Lewis,that was some fight,one of the best I saw live. It sounds like he left quite a mark in the boxing world, especially with that memorable fight against Trevor Smith. Smith v John-Lewis was a humdinger for the Southern Area title
It must have been an even better fight being there
I saw some of John-Lewis' fights and he was a tough so and so, with plenty of energy.
He didn't get many favours in his match making and was a very decent Area level boxer.

do most/many refs have boxing backgrounds? I used to love watching Mickey Vann you could tell he wanted to join in!

Ian's British title eliminator with Mickey Hughes was another belter.
I don't think I saw John-Lewis' fight with Chris Blake, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't another crowd pleaser (up until the cut eye finish).
I was ringside for his 8 rounder with Ray Taylor and Ian was a bit of a whinger that night complaining to the referee.
Darren Dyer punched way too hard for John-Lewis, but Ian was as game as ever.

I saw his 8-rounder with Ray Taylor where Ian complained to the referee. Ian John-Lewis was on the telly a lot back in the late 80s/early 90s when fights would be shown on a Wednesday on ITV or something.
Always entertaining, coming up short in the big fights. Each time I've seen him get stick for dodgy Reffing or Judging I always think back to the limited but big hearted battler he was back then.

awful ref and judge, glad he was sacked. glad to hear he was a game gutsy fighter though, not that it has any relevance to his performance as an official
